Hi Lara, thanks for sharing this. A Tipp for your struggle with removing the pedals. Easier before removing the handlebar: use a Brake to fix the bike. Use your foot to put weight on the Pedal, and turn the Tool. So it cannot turn while using the tool😊 hope it saves you hours!

I have flown USA to Europe with bikes in a cardboard box 7 times. Each time the TSA has opened the box in the USA then left a note inside and then re-sealed it. I've had panniers as packing and used pool noodles to protect the frame. I leave the back wheel on and take the front wheel off but remove the skewers to cut down on width. As long as the box etc weighs 23kg or less it goes as a regular checked bag on Norse Atlantic, Delta, Iberia, Virgin, BA. No additional/oversize charges. Make sure you have a printout of the airlines terms of carriage stating that the bike box is carried as regular checked bag because the check-in counter will always tell you otherwise and try and charge you for it. EasyJet have a small fee in Europe for the bike box. Last time I used EasyJet it was €25 for the bike one way. E-bikes are generally not allowed because of the battery unless it's a Brompton or a similar sized battery that can be carried in your cabin bag.

Can you pack bike grease in the box? Is it only oils that are not allowed. Will be traveling this coming January!

I think grease should be fine, but since they specifically asked about chain oil, it’s probably because it’s considered inflammatory.

Look at First Class tickets when flying. Many airlines allow free luggage and also overweight without charge. The money I saved in fees payed for my upgrade (also, I had a nice gourmet meal).

Hi Lara, thanks for nice videos, I have request if you could please make a video about what kind of bike we can use for touring, there are all kind of opinion about it on youtube and most of them are commercial promotion, if you could explain all components of a touring-suitable bike (from handle bar down to the pedals, especially hydraulic brakes hype these days, are they useless for touring comparing to mechanicals?) that would be much appreciated Thanks
@giantcheerio7 күн бұрын
I would love to make such a video but honestly- I don’t have a clue! I saw people touring on steel bikes, with v-brakes, hydraulic brakes, titanium frames, aluminium frames, carbon forks, pinion, regular 1x11, panniers, drybags, etc-bikes, and it goes on and on and on. I always say that your choice of bike is an individual choice and my choice is not suitable for everyone out there. But I will take some notes and maybe come back with a video idea ;) 🙏😃
@RAsadventures-zr1ge8 күн бұрын
Thanks for that Lara. When I saw you removing the handlebar from the stem with your Allen key I thought it might be worth pointing out that I discovered by bad experience that it is important when reassembling the bike that those 4 bolts should not be overtightened, which is a very easy thing for an amateur mechanic to do. I was touring on a second-hand bike with a similar clamp and both of the alloy straps across the front of the stem broke suddenly with a bang like a gunshot - which could have led to a very dangerous incident as my handlebars were almost detached from the bike. When I replaced the stem I saw that the instructions with the new stem emphasized the low value of the correct torque, insisted that a torque wrench must be used, and said that in the absence of a torque wrench they should be tightened only just enough to prevent the bars moving - far less torque than you would naturally want to use. I'm pretty sure that mine broke because they had been overtightened by a previous owner of the bike. The correct torque feels very low but does not put too much stress on those thin alloy straps. Take care - I always enjoy your videos of your adventures.
@giantcheerio7 күн бұрын
Thanks for your input on that handle bar matter! I always tend to overtighten all kind of screws but also learned that less is more when it comes to those screws (and some others) Thanks !!

Not sure if your aware but the pedal on the non driveside is actually a left hand thread to stop it loosening while you pedal so the pedal you were unable to remove is righty loosey :) hope this helps next time!

@@giantcheerio Ah ok, we've all been there haha. When that happens I would get a metal tube and slide it over the allen key to make it longer so you can get more leverage / stand on it if needed to force it open, they can be a bit of a nightmare to get off if they're over tightened, :) ( basically use this technique :) www.google.com/search?q=extra+leverage+tube+allen+key&sca_esv=ff4380769abef046&udm=7&ei=Tok4Z7iXKt-MkdUPk7yCsQ8&start=10&sa=N&sstk=ATObxK6SemXdNo7LfgJ_xUTTC_m97Cb2cpADza4RhmM01L67QgReIg2Jbuq-gP-ugeUd_05MN0aPfpKgWN1Eu_pf1H1lfwjkBslVRg&ved=2ahUKEwi49pPp5uCJAxVfRqQEHROeIPYQ8tMDegQIAxAE&biw=1920&bih=945&dpr=1#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:a5faa66d,vid:FtnogLf6C2A,st:0 )

If you’re using a common bike box from common brands, it’s good to make some unique markings on your box. You can draw some patterns or whatever with a marker pen. Last time I flew to Amsterdam, there were 2 same Giant boxes that came out of the conveyor. In fact that cyclist and I took wrong boxes. Thankfully we realized quickly and managed to exchange our boxes. I had drawn a smiley on my box with flight details and that was the thing that helped me realize quickly it was the wrong box on my trolley. 😊

OK, I got to say this...first off kudos to you for doing what you are doing however, the meeting of the good people like Ferdinando and Giuseppe (as well as the guy who washed your bike) should've trumped all the negativity you encountered in your journey. Seems you definitely have got anger issues but most important is that you recognize it and do not negate it. Seems like you tend to forget of the good things you have in life, like the being able to travel around the world or being healthy enough to be cycling outdoors. I think you need to recall the tiniest good things you have when you feel the anger overtaking you persona, because you seems like a nice person. Anyway, thanks for sharing this, not everyone show it like it's, as they paint it all wonderful and cheerful but in reality it is NOT. Again, kudos to you and keep it up, don't give up. Just remember the good things you have in life and the people that surround you when at home or in the road. Ta!

Thats absolutely aweful ! And it happened right where I once lived. The insane asylum in Worcester., Ma. They did the very 1st lobotomies, opening brains and shocking them, especially the women cuz noone cared. The truth is not always pretty, but that’s what happened! I actually walked around in there! Old, big, scary buildings, almost castle like!? ~ oops I got off the subject. You have a great day and be safe out there ! Men can suck and I am finding the few good ones are taken. In such crappy situations: breathe deeply! We show how we are feeling through body signals, smiling for example. Behavioral researchers have found that this also works "backwards": Even if you don't feel well: if you force yourself to smile, it puts you in a more positive attitude! A positive form of self-deception! And you can't escape it! Charly Chaplin wrote a wonderful song, which Michael Jackson interprets here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2K3qYeVjZyHbrs I see you have the same Decathlon sleeping pad as me. I really liked it until I was freezing this spring: I had never felt the cold from the ground creeping into my sleeping bag from below before... I immediately bought a new sleeping pad with a much higher r-value. Freezing when sleeping? No way!!!

I have the same power setup: 1 x 20.000, 2 x 10000, just because my navigation app and my geocaching app consume endless amounts of power. I use the phone camera just for occational snapshots as normal, but I don't take videos all the time or vlogs. In the summer I also have a solar panel with me. (very similar to yours, but some years older - maybe I should replace it, technology is advancing quickly. I was pleasantly surprised that IT ALSO WORKS WHEN IT'S CLOUDY. When it was sunny I was able to charge ~20-30% of the 10.000 power bank per day; when it was cloudy 10-20% - better than nothing... I simply attached the panel to the top of my panniers (it doesn't cost any more than if I pack it into my panniers), so the angle of incidence was probably rarely optimal. But since it was always attached to the outside of the bike, I was able to align and use it better during breaks. With a POWERFUL(!) FAST CHARGER AND CABLE, I was able to charge a lot more during a break in a restaurant, beer garden, cafe and even ice cream parlor. (I've gotten into the habit of just asking EVERYWHERE.) Electricity is expensive there because you have to eat something..."There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" 😉 On a long-distance trip, I would also take a day off on a sunny day just to charge all the power banks with the solar panel. It's a disgrace that engineers haven't yet invented a better way to generate electricity from the hub dynamo. No one worldwide seems to have any serious interest in it. These few cycle tourists... let them see how they get on... And since e-bikes with "endless electricity" are flooding the market, the need is drastically decreasing. The EU has been working on a law for some time that will force cell phone manufacturers to make batteries in smartphones replaceable, as it was "normal" in the past. When this is finally implemented (like the requirement for a universal USB-C charger, which even Apple had to bow to), you can just take a few spare batteries with you and everything will be so easy ... But this seems to be a dream ... (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpO4ZK2adsycjpo)
