@@sebastian-FX357Z1 Well 36" wheels exists for quite a while and they are still a good thing for really tall people. Even tho there are not a lot of frame choices out there. It was always a niche thing. But I think the gab between 28/29" (weirdly the same... both are 700c) and 36" is actually to big. So having something in between is not necessarily a bad idea. The thing is... bike manufactures are f** lazy to begin with. Usually XXS and XXL sizes are not really refined in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if not a lot of bike companies hop on the 750d train.

How does this "make money"? Spend a whole bunch of money to develop rims and tires in a new size, in the case of the tires having to make whole new bigger machines, only to offer an easy and cheap upgrade for existing 29" bikes to let people ride gravel more efficiently on bikes they already own.

@@DaveCM your partway there in terms of understanding. It will largely work on bikes that are designed for wheel (total) diameters of around 760mm. You can achieve this with a 700c with a 65mm tire, or a 750b with a 46mm tire. In fact most of the early testing was done on mountain bikes because it's a pretty straightforward swap. This is actually why they chose to pursue this specific size (660mm) because it's the closest you can get with a gravel size tire to MTB specs.

@@galenkehler that is my point. While there may be some gravel bike out there that does, I do not know of one that can accept a 65. The max is around 50. But, you do have a point. There is no penalty for using smaller wheels. This is at least true for going down to 26 inch (559 mm). When you look at the geometry charts of bike models you can notice that up to the L size or about 56 cm the constructeur tries hard to fit the wheels into the smaller frames. That's the reason for the different angles for the smaller sizes. The real ride quality as intended you can only experience in the larger sizes. So depending on the tyre size we should all be using 26 inch or 650B (584 mm) wheels. Bikes for 2 m guys look weird anyway. It's their fault not to be the same size as Eddy Merckx (1.82 m).

Same. Been running a Tripster AT for seven years that comfortably takes 700x50 (after swapping the fork) but it all clears and doesn't pack out in UK conditions. If I was planning on gravel racing I might consider sacrificing the grip and comfort for outright speed, but not convinced they'd be much faster in UK conditions, and possibly slower on wet conditions.

Yeah i do like gravel sized tire more for a gravel bike that hits the rode and smoother dirt tbh. So i do understand and agree. Its just less versitile i feel. Unless they start making a decent amount of quality mtb tires for it too. Tbh tho at least when i started riding more often and new on gravel i tried a xc mtb tire but it was too slow and heavy on the little testing i did on road to a park. I needed a light weight tire till i got in better shape. I think now i can do mtb tire. Only issue is it bottoms out my lauf fork. Most people who run mtb on the siegla have a rigid fork with zero issues. The rest on the grit dont complain. So maybe they dont treat it like a mtb like me humping it and hiting some single track and harsh fire roads. I also barley got used to my 50mm gravel tire toe overlapping my shoe. I feel like a mtb tire toe overlap would be dangerous for my bike. Unless i can fit one of those slacker headsets they use aftermarket for mtb.@darkm4g1c

Might have been useful to do an actual comparison of same branded/material wheels in 700C and 750D with the same width tires. Regardless, this seems like a bad idea. It will force the wheelbase to become longer and potentially create problems with toe overlap. The better way to get a larger diameter is with wider tires, like XC MTB tires. And obviously, there will be very few tire choices unlike 700C which has a huge selection.

I think this wheel makes more sense for taller roadies who can take advantage of a larger wheel and improve bike fit. As for the gravel context, I don’t get how this would be helpful unless you were the most elite of riders looking for an arrow dynamic advantage over a set of 29ers. In most cases, people would be better served by the larger diameter 29er tire.

This is clearly something that would benefit a tall rider the most by giving them a wheel that is more proportional to their overall bike size (just like 650B or 650C for smaller riders). Having an average size rider comment on the pros and cons of it is fine, but this video really needed the perspective of a taller rider to tell you how the change felt to them. I'd be much more interested to hear how a tall rider felt the larger wheel impacted climbing etc. and if they felt there was an advantage to riding with a wheel that was more appropriately scaled to their overall size.

like crank length I think wheel size should have finer gradations for rider size. for too long the bike industry has been lazy and shoe-horned riders who are short or tall onto bikes that really don't fit them. I see this as a good thing for tall riders (above 6'4" / 193cm) but other than that it's just marketing hype. even the name itself: the "d" (which is based off of a very old French standard having "a", "b", and "c" tire variations which maintained a consistent outside diameter) is nonsensical in the era of ERTO rim designations.

I'm totally into the 750d wheel size but not for gravel bikes. I would want to use 750d wheel to use on the front of a mountainbike with a 750x61(31.5x2.4) tire. If I've calculated the height correctly, that tire should fit on most forks that are not XC forks. A 750x61(31.5x2.4) tire would be the same height as a 29x3.0 tire which definitely fit on most non-XC forks.

We have a wheel designed for taller, heavier riders. Who should we have review it? A bantam weight, 5'8" bloke. Smh.

99% of "innovations" big cycling brands are trying to sell nowadays make me want even more for them to be phased out by Chinese brands even more quicker. Like, the whole cycling community for years crying "We lack of smaller equipment for shorter riders! Cranks are too long, handlebars are too wide, options with 650b wheels are too few and almost always unavailable!" Yet WTB comes out with even bigger wheels "for taller riders". For whom? For Shaq?

You've missed the point. You don't need a new bike or frame. These fit a MTB, so offer a "gravelify" option for thousands of existing mountain bikes. This is genuinely exciting as an option. Lots of people already run mountain bikes in gravel events, this gives an easy and cheap path to gravel for anyone with a 29r to get faster rolling tires without lowering the BB or otherwise messing with the geo. (Btw its hilarious to read the comments with all the kneejerk reactions from keyboard warriors who dont think about how these things actually can work. C'mon guys, have a single creative thought of your own for once instead of just parroting durianrider 😂)
