I didn't really expect an honest review from a bike shop owner on a bike that you sell/could potentially sell in your shop. Breath of fresh air that you gave a really honest review and outlined the negatives about the bike. I would definitely buy a bike from you!

I’m very interested in the Big Dummy cargo bike. I love the look and design of it. And the fact that it’s a do all, go almost anywhere tank. I do have to get one.

Great point on replacing car trips with more bike trips. Maybe the visibility opens a door or gateway. Right on right on.

The possibility of QBP effectively unleashing a wave of cargo bike users willing to pass up their cars for bike mobility is huge. Their market position is something other companies cannot match.

Totally agree with your thoughts about how we need to see these bikes on the road to allow their use to grow. My wife and I share a LvH Bullitt E-8000 cargo bike and LOVE it. Yes, an e-assist cargo bike is life changing - in that making going #carfree realistic. With that said, the Big Easy looks really nice for its intended purpose. The ability to haul a trailer is awesome. A comment on integrated lights for e-bikes. Our Bullitt has integrated lights front and rear and we do appreciate them. They do allow you to be seen on a bright sunny day when you go under the shade of a tree-lined street, or a freeway or railroad underpass, etc. However, in defense of Surly's lighting decision on the Big Easy, most integrated e-bike lights have limitations. First of all, integrated e-bike lights often do not provide flash and/or pulse modes, which I feel works best in daylight conditions. I can't tell you how many times I feel having pulsing lights (especially in the front) caught a driver's eye and prevented them from pulling out or turning in front of me. Most rechargeable lights have a good pulse or flash mode. Secondly, most integrated e-bike lights are too dim for seeing at night. With most cities far behind in road upkeep, potholes are an all too frequent reality. I'd say a light of at least 800 lumens is the minimum to see at night, and personally, I would not use less than 1,200 lumens. With this in mind, integrated e-bike lights will allow you to be seen, but may not offer a light bright enough to see at night. I believe this is because of a limitation on the amps the Shimano and Bosch systems allow for power take off for integrated lights. Both Lupine and Light in Motion do have relatively bright integrated e-bike light packages, but I've found L&M doesn't provide a very good pulse mode - at least with my L&M Imjim light (although the Imjim has 800 lumens and is adequate with its solid beam at night). Bottom line, I think Surly knows you will need a good rechargeable light system anyway. I use the Dinotte XML-3, but there are many excellent systems available. I have to charge my e-bike and bike computer anyway, so charging the lights is no more burden.

Great points. The built in lighting is great to have but if you are riding in the dark they typically aren't the best systems. Some companies are working on brake activated lighting which is great to see.

Nice bike, but I don't see it replacing my Yuba Boda Boda and aftermarket Luna BBSHD. I don't have kids to haul, so I use mine for commuting and groceries. It cost me less than half, but I can spin a wrench and my first career was as an electrician 😁. My city is horrible for biking.

I'm very interested in this no car concept with the price of gas and insurance always going up in addition to environmental considerations. I just bought a Surly Karate Monkey for trail riding and love the bike but 5K for this bike does seem very steep. Why is this bike worth 3X the cost of say a RadWagon? Would like to hear some thoughts.

Where to even start? It’s apples and oranges. Literally every component on the Surly is a huge upgrade over the Radwagon. Better motor, battery, drivetrain, wheelset, tires, seatpost, seat, handlebar, stem... almost twice the torque, dual battery option, higher cargo weight rating. Radwagon is a good entry level cargo e-bike, but Big Easy is a different animal. Personally, I think all the Bosch, Brose, etc systems are overpriced though. I’d look for a used Big Dummy and throw a BBSHD 1000w kit on there.

I generally like Surly bikes, but this one is questionable. No integrated lights, no fenders, but pre-routed wiring for a dropper post? You could get a Tern GSD or eBullit E6100 for less money.

So really $2000 more for the motor, and a battery and an extra battery holder which a person needs to pay extra for if they want it installed and they have to buy another battery if they want two batteries.

$5k is just too much. It seems that the 1st electric "cargo" bike out of the gate went with 5k and now every other bike comes put with a 5k price tag. I'd love one, but I'll never be able to get one at this price.

I'm looking forward to trying out maybe an EBO kit on the ARGO cargo. That seems like the most affordable way to get a reliable system together.

The price tag for the Surly Big Dummy is higher than the Yuba Mundo, but both prices are still ok. The Big Easy is USD 5'000,-. Why? This is way overpriced. Where does the money go? Bosch motor and battery have their prices, but we are talking about a package. And bicyle factories have OEM prices. Bicycle brands must have good reasons for their high prices for electric bikes, which they don't have. It is only overpriced because it is electric. As long as the Bosch motor runs, it is fine. But if there are issues, there are no spare parts. Motor has to be returned to Bosch. Plus Bosch batteries have weak capacities. To do a tour of 100 miles with cargo, up to 5 batteries are needed. The Bosch system only accepts Bosch batteries. Cargo bikers are people that like individual things & stuff. A system bike with Bosch is exactly the opposite of that. It has too many disadvantages. Bafang BBSHD 1000 Watt motor or another of the BBS series: - Good price - Very powerful or normal power - it can be chosen - Easy installation - Spare parts to take on tour available - Great choice of batteries - Big selection of accessories - Easy light installation
