I see loads of RE 650s and now the Triumph 400 variants, these affordable bikes will save motorcycling. Most people can't afford a top of the range Ducati, or a R1300GS, I've had so much fun on cheaper, simpler bikes - just get out on 2 wheels, it's ace 😎

Pretty wild to think that motorcycles have become so expensive now that 400cc bikes made in third world countries, costing as much as $6-8,000 would be considered “affordable”.

This was such a well-informed, balanced discussion, and expected nothing less. I own the Himmy 450 and have ridden the 400X some 1000km+. The Triumph tours surprisingly well even alongside middleweights and takes so little effort to ride and handle being so light. I enjoyed it a lot. For me the only knock for touring was the lack of a windscreen and not much to strap on to. I would have loved to own this bike 2 years ago when I started riding 400cc+ bikes. Meanwhile the Himmy is IMHO a fantastic ADV for the price. It takes a bit more effort to stand it up and push it around but in return you get a bike that’s both highly capable and easy riding.

Thank you for nice comparision. I just returned from 1000 KM trip on my scrambler 400X in Arunachal Pradesh, India where terrain is extremely challenging just like up north.What a beautiful machine. Very capable. I have in the past owned the 1250 GS, 850 GSA(current big bike) and Tiger 800 XR. But i always felt the need to have something more manageable. The scrambler is a beautiful multipurpose machine. Take her on trails or highways you will come back grinning. 400X is a versatile machine. Extremely happy with my buy.

I owned a 411 and sold it in anticipation of the new 450. Because it hadn't come out in time for my once a year 2 week moto camping trip, I impatiently bought a 400 X. Now that the 450 is available, I am torn between selling my 400x and buying the Himi. After watching this video, and understanding that 90% of my riding is to coffee shops and the beach, I think I'm going to keep my little scrambler.

Moral: Know who you are and enjoy it!

Your Land Rover analogy is bang on, as someone who , since 1996 , bought a new Defender every 4years or so for my work/ private vehicle. I’m still running my 2015 110 utility as the New Defender just isn’t a work truck! Back to motorbikes, I’ve only bought Triumphs since 97 however I sat on the Triumph 400’s and was put off by the bouncy foot pegs. I test rode a Guerrilla 450 and loved it (agility and B road punch)! Now I can’t decide whether to keep my 8year old T120 or swap it for the Guerrilla 😂. Great vid👍

I have owned 2 Himalayan's which were very capable adventure bikes, especially for those of us not so confident off roader's as they were very forgiving, however at 200 kg wet with Delkevic muffler (on weigh bridge), it could be a hand full but it's overall size was manageable. I think things have changed with the new Himalayan 450-yes it has more mid/top end & yes the suspension is probably better however we now have a bike size which has almost crossed over into the middleweight catagory like the Tenere 700 & it's weight is still up there at 196 kg wet. So for those less experienced riders now are faced with not only the weight factor but a much bigger bike. In tight & difficult situations & you're wanting to turn around, particuarly if you're on a hill, then the Himalayan isn't the bike for you. What didn't come out in this video which has in most other's, is the significant drop in low end pull which was evident from Itchy boots ride of the pre production bike in India, where you could see her often slipping the clutch. Other people have commented it has very little pull below 3,000 rpm. I think as a novice rider especially due to it's weight & size, the new 450 misses the cut for those people. Then it actually becomes a choice between the scram 411 & the Scrambler 400X. The size then of both bikes is similar ,however again the Triumph has the edge in weight & it is very noticeable. I think the weight alone inspires confidence on the triumph for the new rider especially when it comes to more difficult conditions. I didn't notice any flat spots on the triumph & on my ride it certainly charged forward if you gave it some throttle, so it had that excitement value. On the open road I didn't get to try the Triumph but the experience would be greatly improved with a screen & possibly 15T front sprocket. I haven't ridden the new 450 Himalayan as they never seem to have a demo bike at the dealer. However lifting it up off the side stand it felt very heavy & felt like a big bike. I think Royal Enfield should bring out a smaller adventure bike with 21" front & 18" rear (spoke) using the 350 Meteor engine which I think is a better engine than the 411. Their is another aspect to it which also wasn't mentioned in the review. Royal Enfield's are normally known for their simplicity-reliability & ease of maintenance, particurely in the modern era with new CEO & better quality control. Their is a significant deviation from the previous Himalayan 411 in that it was air/oil cooled-2 valve with adjustable tappets. However this has all changed with the new Himalayan which is now water cooled-4 valve head & shim adjustment for the valves with the air cleaner under the seat, which requires tank removal to change the air cleaner (which you didn't have to with the previous model). This adds significantly to the service costs if you can't do it yourself, which is a departure for Royal Enfield from their previous philosophy.
@drewiediggler13 ай бұрын
I feel the same about the 450 Himalayan. When that 17 litre tank is full of fuel it's a proper, top heavy beast. May as well be on a 650 vstrom with more poke. For me the new Himalayan has missed the mark somewhat. I'd prefer the old air cooled one but with the build quality of the new one.

Couldn’t agree more mate and your conclusion is spot on. We’re lucky enough to be getting some cracking cheap bikes in the uk. It might open up more customisation and modifying too. Rather than going with the usually expensive factory upgrades and mods people are more likely to want to use on higher price bracket bikes, getting stuck in and ripping bits off or swapping them out on a less expensive bike isn’t as big a deal! It could create some really cool new bike communities and groups!

I disagree on the fuelling point, as I have tested both and found the Triumph better off the bottom and to midrange. It was crisp and had a good idle speed, coupled with light weight acceleration was better. The last point you made about who they are built for (India) not us I completely agree on -the designer Mark said as much in either your previous Himi video or the MAD tv one. This contradicts what Nathan Millward was saying about who it was built for. Everything else I would say was spot on, build quality and suspension and brakes are better on the Himi. Both great in their own way. Would love a Triumph dual sport though.

That was a refreshing view. 👍 I like the looks of the triumph (like you), but the overall package or the enfield draws me to that one. It doesn't sacrifice a good payload for a lighter weight chassis and I could stick oem panniers, topbox and pillion and head off for a few weeks. Trouble is, it's missing something for me and I think it's the looks, no way would I look back at the bike in the garage. I still can't be bothered to test ride one and am still riding around on a 350 meteor... but I like the segment they are in, my triumph trophy that I've owned for over 20yrs just feels complete overkill compared to the 350. P.S. did I miss hear the price? I thought they were at the top end of 5K not the top of 4K.

Morning, now we've got the cheap chunky baby RR, but you've got to go old ours is a '13 2.2D Evoque, it's the only good ones you can get. But when a new defender is £60k+ it's ridiculous amounts of cash. If I go into my garage, there is no motor cycling gear, but there's a Giant fast road AR which is a flat bar gravel bike ( bicycle). My last motorbike was a 1996 ZX6R, that was 20yrs ago, I've been looking at vstrom 800, transalp, KTM 790, these are all big bikes, up around £8 - £10k, which is a big lump of cash, when I don't actually know what I'm going to do with a motorcycle, if I was planning to go around UK, or Europe, any one of those, perfect( it's seems from what I've read this week KTM may be admitting there's a problem with thier engines) but, if we're touring around say Wales, the caravan is getting popped on the back of the Evoque, then wife and pups come as well, with hot shower, heating, comfortable bed. Then pops up these 2 bikes, cheap, do most things, little triumph is Steve McQueen cool, and a hard as nails RE, both seem really cool little bikes, got to have a look at RE, neither cost a fortune so wouldn't feel guilty if it sat in garage for few weeks, as the roads are crap in Devon, both make sense, maybe the Enfield slightly more.

Great great review and one part in particular. At the end when you say. Are you opening the garage with your jeans and fancy boots or something like that......that's what I neede to hear. I've had more than 27 motorcycles and downsizing because I only ride with my bike just for pleasure. With my wife at the back to the city or 50km's away and 50km's back. I've test ridden with the Himalayan 450 and more with the guerrilla 450 and engine wise.....I like it. But I think the himalayan is not a good looking bike to me. The shape of the guerrilla is way better but Royal Enfield f*cked it up by a color sheme chosen by a 5 y old child. If they brought it out in one color variants I would not hesitate buying the Royal Enfield Guerrilla. I know their quality is okay. I've had the Meteor 350 also and nothing to complain. My point of having a bike is........if you park it, you walk away and you don't look back to it then it merely a means of transportation. If you look back to it before you close the garage door, than it is love. And I need that also. I haven't testride the 400x but I already love the design. So if there isn't much of a difference engine wise than it could be the Triumph. I must say. A himalayan 450 with non tubeless tyres starts at a price of €6250 for the kaza brown. The grey blue like in your review is €6350 and if you want tubless tyres the Himalayan 450 starts at a price of €6800. The guerrilla starts at a price of €6000 and with all the parts i Wanted on it €6700. A basic Triumph 400x is €6795 and only 2y of warranty. Royal enfield gives 3 y warranty and Kawasaki 4y and Honda 5 just like CF moto. But only 2y for the triumph. I mean it but for me it is also a deal breaker. So I will have to look further. Anyway. Great review. 👌

I just don't understand why Triumph gave those flimsy bending footpegs on the bike. It is really annoying and I always feel like I am gonna slip and fall down. They should be bending on only one side when the bike falls down. It's really scary and frustrating

I wanted to love the RE but the bars are too vibey at Highway speeds. I just need two cylinders.

The Triumph is not aimed squarely at the Himalayan customer much more road focussed. The Goerilla v Speed is the much more interesting competition thats the video i want to see.

KZbin is getting crazy with adverts now. You have to watch adverts to access the video then there’s an advert literally one minute into the video… like are you mad?
@BikeWorldTVshow3 ай бұрын
The amazing content is worth sitting through a couple of ads. 😂

KZbin premium is the best 10 Euros you can spend per month! I don’t know how I managed to live through the ads before!
@jonm72723 ай бұрын
You don't get anything for free, either pay the small monthly fee for premium (and get loads of extras included) or put up with the adverts. Your choice, I went with premium. No adverts at all.

Which would be better for a short 5'6 rider like me, the 400x is lighter but has a higher seat height at 835mm , the 450 is heavy and looks bulkier but it also comes with a 805 mm seat height option?
@shaqueeel3 ай бұрын
I am 5.6 and ride 400X with no hassle, its the rider not the bike, you will gain the confidence after you have churned some 500-600 kms.

Why does no journalists adress the elephant in the room? Weight. These bikes should be 130/140kg. Its the same most modern bikes. How did we get from the original 1992 Fireblades 185kg back to 1980s bike weights?
@darklord91023 ай бұрын
Himi is full metal plus factory settings have center stand & some other stuff which weights above 15kg.

I guess the affordable off-roading Defender can be replaced by Japanese pickups like the Hilux?
