Bilingual, dissecting the word, means two languages. It doesn't speak to when you started learning one or the other. And it doesn'tmean you necessarily speak them both at the same level. A person who speaks two languages, the less proficient one at least conversationally, can safely call themselves bilingual. But unless you are surrounded by both languages in your culture (either by linguistic demographics or by speaking a second language at home) you will not be at the same level in both.

Famke Jannsen, Jodie Foster and Diane Kruger are the only bilingual celebrities in this video. Bilingual means that you speak two languages BESIDES your own. Otherwise the vast majority of the world would be bilingual, and then this video wouldn't make sense.

First of all thanks a lot for video. May I make some sugesstions if you make another one? Renee Zellweger, Rebecca de Mornay and Sandra Bullock all speak german fluently. Sandra with even some frankonian accent, very cute! If somebody tells you otherwise, di Caprio's german is rudimentary. Though he understands more than he speaks. He is just out of practice, I think. Obama's sister Dr.Auma Obama speaks german. It's admirable, because it is a difficult language and still not very popular

Morena grew up in Brazil and she is Br and it actually makes sense that she'd be fluent Im taking Portuguese evening classes.It is exausting but I love it. both my cousins are married to Bahianos, their kids spend their holidays here in France.I taught them French and in return they teach me a few words of portuguese.This summer I will teach them some French grammar so they can be on par with local children.

I was born in The Netherlands and I learned German, French and English and Latin in the Dutch school system. It does help that many movies on t.v had subtitles in my language so you can connect some of the words together.

Some see it as a waste because the year after it can be hard to adjust back to studies but yeah that year is focused on other things than school studies like language learning. Also, a common thing to do in Summers for Irish teenagers is to go down to the Gaeltacht areas, i.e Irish speaking areas, and immerse yourself down there. In 3 weeks you can come back fluent. In fact, I'm doing it this year.

It's very difficult for Americans or anglophone people in general speak languages like italian or french cause they far from english (both in grammar and vocabulary/accent). but she does it perfectly. good colin too but not like jodie

I heard Mira Sorvino speaks Mandarin. I'd like to see a clip of that. All these examples of people speaking more than one European language is impressive, don't get me wrong, but if they spoke a completely dissimilar language like from Asia or Africa or a Native American language as a second language, I'd find that even more impressive.

You are right.I study French as my second foreign language and it's hard to be really fluent,but maybe if i studied French first,and then English,it would be different.I study French since I was in 5th grade and English since the 2nd grade.It really makes a difference.

Kobe Bryant is fluent in Italian--he played buckets in Italy at the start of his career. Both Leonardo Di Caprio and Sandra Bullock are fluent in German (grandparents from there). Good for one and all for knowing another language--makes you twice the person and should be an inspiration for us all.

Seeing Famke, Malin, Paul and others with foreign backgrounds speek in their native tongue isn't as impressive as Jodie Foster's French and Italian or Colin Firth's Italian or Diane's French. It's awesome to see people making the effort to learn languages other than their native tongue. I wish I had the time to learn another language (I've been saying for the last 5 yrs that I want to learn Italian but I haven't managed to make time for it yet).

yes as a French , Emma Thomson has a little accent. "le plus" , we say (not all of us) the sound "s" in the end, "inclus" there is no "i" (because she says "incluiii" ^^), and like most of non french speaker it's difficult for her to pronounce the sounds "en" "on" "an" "in " "un". But accents are beautiful, and thanks to all the english speakers trying to speak our language !

Yeah here in Ireland we have something called Transition Year, it's after you complete the Junior cycle of education, and it's a year to do different things and a lot of people go to the countries of their foreign languages and come back fluent.

I just saw an interview conducted entirely in Spanish promoting Bates Motel for Universal Channel LA and he was awesome! His Spanish was almost perfect! Fluent and articulate. His British accent shows a little but he was great nonetheless.

There are several Romance languages derived from Latin. The five you listed are the five most widely spoken, but another, Catalan, is the sixth and is spoken in four countries in Europe and is the official language of Andorra. Romansch is another language believed to be the closest living language to Latin and it is spoken in Switzerland. There are far more than 5 Romance languages. There are more than 5 in Spain alone, not including Spanish.

As someone raised bilingual, people will hardly ever display equal proficiency in both languages. I was raised bilingual French-German, and depending on certain subjects, I will be stronger in one or another. That is why, as professional translators/interpreters, perform from the foreign language into the native language because language levels are almost never equal. But that does not mean that someone can then not be considered bilingual or polyglot (more than 3 languages).

I know how to adapt depending on the setting so if you walk up to me speaking Spanish no I will not complain about stereotypes because speaking Spanish is a representation of my dual culture because I am Mexican-american not just Latina

Agreed. I am American and speak some French (I used to be fairly fluent but I am way out of practice). I have always been conscious that I sound, and most Americans sound, like an American speaking French, and not a native. Jodie sounds like a native.

English is a blend of Germanic and Latinate language tree. Before 1066 AD English was purely Germanic. Our grammar structure is Latinate, as well as many of our words. Construct is a latinate word, build is Germanic, insect is latinate, bug is Germanic. Etc.

Of course, dialects vary a lot. The south of Sweden is sometimes difficult for me to understand when spoken (I´m from Stockholm), but we spell excactly the same. That doesn´t change at all. The north have their (sometimes inbred) accents, which differ sometimes in expressions. However; it is still the same language and is spelled in one way only; in swedish:)

Really, b/c I really imagined that a lot of people in the Uk would at least know some French. I speak some Spanish pretty well, but I do need to improve a bit and I'd like to learn Portuguese, italian, and some Creole in addition to all of that. But I weirdly always felt it necessary given living in the USA it's the most common language spoken other than English and is more spoken throughout the Americas.

Ya, Brazilian is clearly short for the Brazilian dialect of Portuguese, the clarity of which you revealed with your correction. Language's purpose is communication. Linguistic snobbery slows down communication, so it can loop back and tell people how it thinks something ought to have been expressed. So it's better, from a linguistics standpoint, to speak a language (what people consider to be) badly and be understood perfectly...than correct utterances which you and veryone understood perfectly.
