I am sharing my journey with my children from infancy to 6 years old in our pursuit of learning multiple languages. I am an English speaking parent, and I am not fluent in any other language. My children have been learning American Sign Language (ASL), Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and English (their native language). In this video, I share the resources, tips and methods we have used so fair to achieve our language learning goals.

I'm an ESL teacher and teach Koreans English on KZbin but this is something Korean parents really want to do, teach their kids English even though they cant speak it. I'll watch this and learn and tell other Korean parents how to teach their kids English. If I talk about your video I'll link to it in my description. Is that fine with you? I loved that I found your channel!

My goal was to teach my child a second language and without me searching for how to, I was surprised this showed up in my page, and I took it as a sign to start now vs at 2 years old. He's turning 1 in a couple of days and you've really enlightened me on how to start. I'm a friend... I've subscribed. Thank you for creating this video, and yes, sign language is good. I wish my mom taught me different languages, I had to learn my second language on my own (at age 11 or 12) and I'm in French class now (age 15). I still teach myself other languages I'm studying Chinese now. Chinese is a bit easy to learn since I know most of the characters from Japanese (my second language!)

Just discovered your channel and wanted to mention, I LOVE your energy! You are so positive and informative and upbeat without being frantic -- a lot of channels speed up speech or cut out pauses to the point that listening to them can be almost exhausting, but watching you I feel both inspired and calmed at the prospect of teaching my kiddo more languages. Also, please give yourself more credit! American education is just painfully bad at teaching languages so if you don't feel like you are a confident speaker but you do have receptive fluency in Spanish, you are beyond monolingual, even if you don't feel like you can claim to be bilingual. I don't know what the word is for those of us in the in-between space there, but there should be one. And it's amazing what you are doing for your kids. I'm so motivated by watching this. Thank you for sharing!!

Your son seems excited to speak and encourages your daughter. I'm curious to see what happens in the future. I'm in the process of teaching my kids ASL with common words. I also bought an arabic dictionary and I have an app that teaches the letters and another that quizzes the user on the words that are being introduced in each category.

Thank you so much for this comment! I plan to keep sharing our journey. It really helps me as well to read these because it is such a long journey and commitment. Actually today I took my daughter to the nail salon and the ladies doing our pedicures spoke Spanish. She spoke to them the entire time in Spanish. I had no clue what they were saying to each other most of the time. I reminded me that I need to work on my own language journey. You are so lucky to have so many languages within the family. Keep going and exposing them to each in some way consistently. It really helps ❤️

Great question! I still have 3 of my 4 kids in a language immersion school. And I also still have 2 of them taking online classes to continue speaking to native speakers. It’s really a long term commitment so that they don’t lose the language skills entirely from lack of use. But it’s really rewarding when I see them having conversations in the foreign language.

I'm so interested in this topic! I'm 33 and I have a 19 month old daughter. I'm Italian living in Italy. I studied English in high school but I couldn't speak at all.. I thought languages weren't for me.. but I was so in love with this language!!!! At 27 I decided to study it by myself taking few classes here and there.. It took me ages to reach the intermediate level.. I would like to introduce English to my baby.. till now I let her watch cartoons in English since I'm so embarrassed to teach her things with my broken accent.. I found a kindergarten where kids are exposed to English 4 hours per day.. but my concern is that the kids who are attending this school aren't that good in their native language (italian) and they don't speak English either.. (age 3 to 5)... I'm confused... I don't know what to do...

Hi! Don't worry about the other small children because they are learning too. Most of the children in my children's school didn't know how to speak Mandarin at first but learned through their teachers. And their accents were perfect by the end of the year. Remember that language learning is a long term commitment for children. As long as you keep them in programs to teach English they will learn it much better than we learn languages as adults studying. It's harder for us. Also, English is tough because there are so many rules and rule breaking. To start early with English is definitely a good idea. The cartoons are a great start too. You are doing a great job!

不用提前说你的孩子还小啊。没关系的。大家已经知道他们的年龄。学习第二个语言需要时间。加油妈妈! I teach Chinese virtually in an immersion style and I'm not Chinese. As long as the teacher is actually fluent students will learn haha It is great for them to be introduced as young as you feel like, as long as you help them stick to the journey. However some research shows that too many languages at once may not be the best method.
@BrittanyKellyTV
@BrittanyKellyTV 3 жыл бұрын
Of course, you don’t have to be Chinese to teach it lol. For us, as long as the speaker is a native Chinese speaker we will select that teacher, whether it’s for Chinese or Spanish. I know plenty of English speakers who are fluent in English, but they aren’t native speakers. There is a difference. May you give more detail about this research you refer to? How many is “too many” in terms of quantity of languages learned at once? Does it specify age? We have been successful with 3 spoken languages and ASL so far. At this point, I definitely feel comfortable adding another one, but it’s a time commitment for each language. Also, a link would be great! Thanks!

Hi Kelly, my husband and I are Vietnamese and living in VN. both of us can speak English fluently. We're raising a bilingual kid. We aren't living close to our Vietnamese parents and only see them a few times a year. And my kids can speak English very well while her Vietnamese is so bad because we mainly speak to her in English. Due to Covid, she doesnt have many chances to interact with many people. So now our problem is she doesnt like Vietnamese people nor peers. The fact that she doesnt speak Vietnamese makes us so challenging to send her to school. she's two years old now. fyi it's not common here to raise bilingual kids and bilingual school is too expensive. Hi Kristen, I understand how this can be challenging. You may want one parent to speak to her in Vietnamese only and one parent to speak to English. For clarity, is the school an English or Vietnamese speaking school?

@@BrittanyKellyTV my husband is currently talking to her in Vietnamese. But he's always busy working and not very talkative. And schools which are affordable for us are teaching in Vietnamese. I don't know if I should start to use Vietnamese in some social interactions because my kid completely prefer English over Vietnamese. Should I speak Vietnamese in the morning and English in the Evening or what? Thank you so much for taking your time.

At what age did you start screen time for the reinforcement? My son is being raised trilingual. I speak Italian and his mother Twi. However, Drs say not give the baby screen time.

I think it’s great! When my oldest daughter was the same age she was learning Spanish and sign language. It was great to see her sign the same thing for something whether it was in English or Spanish. I believe I mentioned that in the video. It’s great.

I do speak two languages but want to teach Mandarin to my 15 month old baby....what would be the first steps? If I understood the video correctly the immersion schools come in a little later??!!

You can hire a babysitter who speaks in the target language, and play songs/videos in the target language as well. My daughter started listening to songs in Mandarin and watching Chinese Emma videos (here on KZbin) when she was that age. Then at 2 years old we started weekly Mandarin lessons. At 3 years old we sent her to an immersion school for Mandarin.

Thank you! How much screen time does each language gets? Did you play Chinese videos for certain time period and than Spanish? I speak Hindi, so planning on showing her some videos, but it sure if I should just stick to Mandarin for now. If not, how often should we spend on videos for each language?
@BrittanyKellyTV
@BrittanyKellyTV 3 жыл бұрын
@@KM-rs5dx At that age I only showed videos for about 15 mins a day per language. It was more important to have a real person who speaks directly to them. PandaTree is an online service that has Spanish and Mandarin for children. Also, you can schedule language learning on Verbling. You will need to search for a Verbling teacher who works with very small children and keep each session shorter (no longer than 30 mins). You can do that a few times a week, but daily exposure is better.

Hi I’m a long time sub sense I was pregnant! My baby girl Winnie is 7 months now we are learning signing right now but I’m preparing to being communication and language. Please do a video explaining a little bit more about the Chinese full immersion school as well as explain how you can find one in the US like I live in it and Georgia for example how would you go about doing that? Also have you done a video showing how you schedule and balance everyday life?

Hi Amber!!!! Great ideas! I can absolutely do those video suggestions. Interestingly, I thought about moving to Georgia last year (I was mainly looking at Alpharetta) and I found a good amount of Chinese programs to explore. I haven’t done the everyday life balancing video yet either. I’ll plan for those to upload next month ❤️.

@@cristabel62 Yes! I can only speak English and I hired a sitter to only speak Spanish to her. My daughter’s first words were actually in Spanish instead of English. Their brains at that age easily can categorize each language. After that we started Chinese. As long as you stay consistent they learn it. Otherwise, they will forget if it isn’t used often.

Oh, of course! Some people just believe that children should only speak to their parents for the rest of their lives. Why even think of broadening the amount of people they can communicate with when they can just speak solely to their parents lmao! Right, “real player”
@hxdcm

@@BrittanyKellyTV (referencing a sarcastic comment above yours) Some people just are comfortable being "Momma's boys" their whole lives, and unfortunately were not taught to expand their horizons (some people naturally do, but some need positive feedback from their parents and not be disciplined for thinking outside the box). It's interesting how many "momma's boys" are "players" as well, and treat their ladies in non-optimal ways in order to please their overly possessive mommas (as no women could possibly be good enough for their sons, other than the mommas). Obviously, mothers should be respected, but overall I feel bad for these people like above, as they are often manipulated and trained into this mindset without a sense of balance with the world around them. Anyway, thanks again for helping us to get out of our narrow mindsets and plan for the future. I think most children would be very thankful as adults, for the leg-up they are given by a parent who is passionate about their learning 🤗. I definitely wish I had early age language opportunities like the ones you mentioned and will try to implement your ideas should I be blessed with children in the future!

@@hxdcm Thanks!!! I will keep going. In fact, I just had my own Spanish lesson yesterday so that I can learn to speak it too. Sometimes helping our children reach for the stars can inspire us to try something new too, I don’t see the point in limiting myself or my children. I appreciate your support so much. 99% of the comments in this community are positive and not random like “real player” lol. 😌
