Hi Isis, researches say that a baby is ready to learn languages since they are in the mother's belly. The baby will absorb the languages a bit by bit. At around 4 o 5 months old they can distinguish different languages of their parents. So, the best way to teach bilingual children is.. parents keep talking to the baby in their mother tongues, lets say, since they are born. I know a couple with 2 children. She speaks Thai, but not German. Her husband speak German, but not Thai. Each of them talk to their children in thier own language. Between them, they speak English. As a result, their children grow up speaking 3 languages! and their brain just amazingly automatically switch whenever they wanna talk to their father or mother. So, you can just keep talking to them in Portuguese, at least in side the house. They will absolutely be able to speak the two languages. Best wishes 😘!

The easier way to teach them how to speak portuguese is to speak with them in portuguese haha. My mother is brazilian and my father is german, she always talked to me in portuguese when my father wasen't nearby so i grew up learning both languages naturaly without having to study ... this is the easier way :p. You must pick some time to speak withe them only in portuguese ! :) Love your videos ! and congrats for the 80.000 subscribers, this is a lot of people haha, take care !

I find FaceTiming or Skyping relatives helps a lot with little ones hearing the language. I FaceTime our relatives at least once a week.

I don’t have kids yet but I know that when I do, I want them to be bilingual because my mother only speaks Spanish, so obviously I’m going to want them to be able to speak to her in her mother tongue. Nice video!

Although I do not have a child of my own I do know quite a few Brazilians with kids married to native English partners living in English speaking countries. What I hear from them is that teaching a foreign language to a child requires a whole lot of determination, patience, knowledge, time put in and most importantly consistency. By consistency they mean every day teaching! There is this Brazilian mom of 4 who lives here in Australia whose Aussie hubby gets already by in Portuguese as Amanda has made it a priority: ALL of her kids were to learn and talk in Portuguese at home. Her 3 oldest ones have been taking up the learning pretty well whereas her youngest one was very reluctant at first and even confronted Amanda by saying that ' I'm Australian and my native language is English !" LOL..Here is how Amanda sorted it out, she told her daughter IN PORTUGUESE that not only she would insist on teaching her Portuguese but also every time she talked to her in English she would totally ignore it. Initially the little one - she was 4 at the time- was not happy about it, as time went by and seeing that mom meant it what she explained to her and watching her siblings talk to each other and the parents in Portuguese , eventually she gave in. Hubby has been VERY supportive along the process and put his kids's interest first which is very noble and generous of him as he is not fluent in Portuguese. Long story short, all the 4 kids are bilingual and they speak Portuguese with no English accent at all.It is outstanding! Despite being pretty tricky to taking on this challenge once the kids get through childhood having learned another language they will be it fluently and it will be second nature to them. Lastly, as you Ysis wisely put in , it will be a precious gift, out of all gifts, that you as parents could ever give to your child, which will have a meaningful and sentimental value to them for life. Don't give up, keep enduring till they learn and they will as credible researches tell us that there is no better age to learning a language than childhood . The earlier they get started the better they will learn and benefit form it.

My ex-wife wanted to teach our daughter Spanish at age 9 but I told her it'd be a bad idea and she didn't listen. Well whenever my kid was with me for a week she spoke Spanish and English with her mom. My daughter got a group of Puerto Rican friends and is fluent in Spanish despite her mom not wanting her to be bilingual. Now that my second wife is Russian she's expressed interest in learning Russian and lives with us where I speak Spanish with her and my wife speaks Russian to her and the other kids.

I'm in very similar situation where I'm Slovakian and my husband is British.I don't have my family or anybody who speaks my language here so I'm the only Slovakian influence our little girl has.Most of the time when daddy is not around I speak only my language to her and I'm very proud that she understands absolutely everything even when my parents talk to her through Skype.However she is not speaking Slovakian apart of few words that she will mix with English.I also find it hard and frustrating at times -frustrating with myself-as when I need to explain something important to her I choose to do so in English cos I feel like she will understand it faster.Your video gave me a little push to implement a little more structure in to our learning😊And congratulations on 80k you absolutely deserve it!

Im the same with my Daughter.She understands everything I say in German but answers in English.I also explain stuff to her in English because I think she will understand it better. Im trying to only speak German to her but very often use English but if I do I say it in German again. Its hard to be consistent especially if you are the only one that speaks that Language.

my family speaks 3 languages between each other. My parents did it like this that my dad speaks english and only english to the children. Then mum speaks more native language and little to none of english. Grandparents speaks to us in chinese dialects. We are all adults now and fluent in 3 languages and quite good with english and the native language =D. Hope its helpful & love your videos.

Acredito que a melhor forma é você falar com eles em casa em português, afinal em todos os outros lugares, quando forem para a escola, eles só vão falar em ingles, então com você em casa eles falam português. Acho que só assim conseguirão ser fluentes nas duas linguas. Caso contrario será como nós aqui no Brasil aprendendo ingles, demoramos séculos estudando porque não praticamos o speaking... I speak to my 2.5 year old daughter only in French. I'm the only French speaker around, everyone else speaks Hebrew (we live in Israel), including the mother. Since I'm at work most of the day, I can speak with her only in the evenings and weekends. If I stick with it (and I do), she understands both languages at the same level. She also speaks French almost at the same level as Hebrew, though she chooses almost always to speak in Hebrew. But if I ask her to switch to French or to translate, she knows how to do it. Occasionally, and always in the shower, I also speak to her in English. Of course, she's not at the same level in English but knows quite a lot. I agree that around 1.5 year old, it seemed as if I was losing. But one just needs to go on, they will catch up eventually. One important thing is to NEVER translate to the more common language. If there's a word they don't understand, explain anyway you want, just don't translate. Otherwise, they'll get use to it and wait for the translation and you'll get use to it too and start translating everything. Not good. Good luck to all.

Set a time when you speak Portuguese. Example: Speak Portuguese only at dinner. This is My Schedule for Speaking: English in the morning and at school. Swedish in the afternoon. (Until I pick them up) I let my kids only speak Turkish at dinner time and at night. More In-Depth Schedule (English not included) : When I pick up the kids I ask, " How was your day? " I would say in Swedish. They would say something in Swedish like, " Good! " and talk about the rest of their day in detail. When it's time for dinner I say, " Everyone, time for dinner! " in Turkish. Then, everyone comes out and asks what's for dinner. We eat and after we eat, we go back to talking in Turkish for the rest of the day! I only give a response in the language we're speaking at the time and ignore any other things they say in any other language/say " What did you say? "

As a native Russian speaker married to a Mexican living in US and I understand your struggle! I find myself thinking in English and it even seems at times like I'm forgetting Russian words. I know a family friend where the mom ONLY communicates to her child in French, ever since he was a baby. He is now a toddler and fluent in both so far. She is very diligent in this method so she does not fall out of it, as she is determined to raise a bilingual child. :)

Hey Ysis! Been watching you for a while. I’m from Argentina and live here but I lived most of my life in English speaking countries. I’ve been making an effort at home to speak in Spanish to my 19 month old son while my husband and I only speak English to each other at home. It’s hard to speak Spanish at home even if I live surrounded by it still, haha! I love your bath time idea and the songs, I’m gonna try them! One thing I do is always say the word of something in both languages when I teach him something new, seems to be working so far!

It would be cute to make videos in Portugués like greetings, numbers, etc for your children and play them for them or find children's videos that teach the basics for children. I only say that because my toddler learns more from videos on the screen than from me speaking or I guess he prefers the screen. I don't know Spanish well, but I play songs for my son whose family on his dad's side speaks Spanish. I am learning as well :)

I really understand your dilema. I am Portuguese in the States and both my children are fluent in Portuguese but their father is also from Portugal. Now fast forwarding to grandchildren and the situation is now very complex. Both my children married Americans and English is the family’s common language. It is a struggle to constantly become aware of the need to jump into Portuguese, which everyone wants the children to learn… not happening easily for sure but we will not give up. I live in the Åland islands which is a Swedish speaking part of Finland. I am from the US so have no family here. We have twins. I very rarely speak swedish to the twins even when their friends are visiting. Some of their friends even learned to understand English because they were at our house so often. You will have someone to speak with as your son gets older. One funny thing is that when they are speaking to their dad, who is a native, and I answer the question they have asked him, they will turn to me and say, "We asked dad not you. If we wanted the answer from you we would have asked in English." The twins only speak English to me. In my free time I try to create places where I can speak English. I write kids songs which I sung earlier earlier with the twins. Now days I spend my free time trying to teach Swedish speaking kids ages 3-7 English though songs. I can relate. It's really hard when you're immersed in another language. I'm living the same experience as you, with English and Portuguese, in Canada. The reason I didn't introduce it earlier, was because my daughter needed speech therapy and, at the time, switching languages didn't work and wasn't helping her speech. Hi Ysis! Congratulations on your 80.000 suscribers!! I know it's hard to teach your native language when you are in an English speaking country. I think it would be really helpful that whenever you are alone with your children just speak to them in portuguese. One of my friends is married to an American guy and she only spoke to her daughter in Spanish so by the time she was 3 she could fully understand the language. Then when she started shool she learned English and now she knows how to speak fluently both languages. Try to start with your little daughter Isabella because although she is very young she gets used to the sounds. Your children are very young so you still have time to teach them, don't give up even if it seems hard because I know some of my friends with a bilingual parent which has not taught to them the language would like to learn it now but it's much harder when you've grown up. One of the things I'm most grateful for is being bilingual ( I speak spanish- native language- and English).If you do understand a little bit of Spanish I would recommend you to watch two channels of families that are raising bilingual and trilingual kids. The first one is "mamaybebes" she is Peruvian and her husband is Russian but they live in the States and their children aged 8 and 5 both speak perfectly the 3 languages. The other one is "Grace Villarreal" she is a spanish youtuber but married to an american man and she speaks to her daughters in English. I hope this is helpful Ysis :)

Great job! I think you've started well. Don't give up, that's the hardest part. I started bilingual with my son who is now 8 years old. I don't have much contact in my native language, Spanish. My son has started Spanish school and that has re-sparked our interest. My youngest too sees her brother and gets involved. You go through ups and downs. Keep it up. My kids are bilingual. I never put that much thought into it... I just speak to them in my native language,and their father is his... (I'm fluent in his monther tongue, he doesn't speak or understand mine, at all) Works just fine if you do it from birth and they're used to it.

I live in a country where being bilingual is the minimum standard to survive in most places, so introducing a language to my toddler cousin isn't very challenging. I'm the only one who speaks the language I am currently teaching my cousin so it can set my goal back a bit, but the good thing is it can be mixed in with three other languages that are commonly being used in my family. My toddler cousin already understands a fair bit of the other langues, but is quick to catch on the new one I'm teaching her.

I am in the same situation and have to remind myself every day to use my native language (afrikaans). I do forget sometimes as English is my go-to language. My husband is very supportive and reminds me throughout the day to speak to my boy in Afrikaans. We have some books in Afrikaans and found some cartoons that he used to like. My mom is Brazilian and my father is American. I was born here in the US. My mom found it hard to remember to speak Portuguese with my brother and I. I'm 27 now and I speak Portuguese at around a 3 year old level. lol I wish she spoke Portuguese with us! I have a 1 year old and I'm trying to learn so I he can be bilingual. This was a really good video to get me going on teaching my children Spanish again. I’m half Colombian and had the best of intentions to make sure I taught my boy (nearly 3) the language. Initially it went pretty well. We did sing and sign when he was about 1 and found that helped with him understanding that the word in English and the word in Spanish meant the same thing. He even preferred to say certain things in Spanish (agua, naranja, mas, mano) he could count to 10 and understood the colours. It didn’t feel like hard work and I was pretty pleased with myself! I think things slipped when he went to Nursery and they weren’t able to reinforce the Spanish words because they don’t know the language and to be fair have 20 other children to look after so it’s pretty much fallen by the way side. We now have a 7 month old daughter too and your video is well timed as I feel enthusiastic again about trying to teach Spanish. Picking bath time is a good idea, will try that! I also found teaching my husband and making it funny meant that my boy was more interested because the focus wasn’t on him so felt more like it was entertainment and didn’t make him feel self conscious. My mom's language isn't very common, but we have a lot of family here in the US that speaks it. Growing up she did speak to us in her language and i can understand most of what she says, but I never learned to speak. She told me as a kid I could never say things properly and she got frustrated and gave up XD and I remember as a kid I avoided speaking it and just answered everything in english.

Great video Ysis. I have the same situation at home. Everybody here is English except me. I try my best to speak portuguese with my toddler and she was always replying in English or losing her interest. Now, my mother came all the way from Brazil to visit us and finally my little one is taking more interest in speak Portuguese. She is now singing "Atirei o pau no gato" e "Janela Janelinha". I can't describe the feeling. I guess the secret is endurance and show then that that is no othet option. My mum only speak in portuguese, so my little one couldn't reply in English hahahha...But also, let them learn having fun and not been forced to do it. Adorei o video.

Thank you for sharing this. My native languages are Sundanese and Bahasa Indonesia, and I am planning to teach English as a second language of my kid. I am still looking for the right method now. Anyway I just know that alphabet in portugese is kind of like bahasa Indonesia (the way you spell A, B, C, D, E, F G, is just the same)

Currently expecting my first child in October, and me and my boyfriend are both bilingual. I'm from Mexico and his mother is from London and his father is German. Having family around seems to really make things easier, as my mom and dad speak more Spanish than English, so I know I can count on them to help me. That way even if I don't speak too much Spanish around him, he will pick it up from his grandparents.

That's so great to have family to help! I hope you don't simply rely on your parents, but provide them with books and videos in Spanish, otherwise their vocabulary input can be a bit insufficient and your baby will learn how to nag and curse at news channels instead of animals and colors :D

Hello Ysis, thank you for putting yourself out here for this cause. I also am trying to raise my children as bilingual in a similar situation as you. I am basically the only one readily available to speak my language to my children. I am Edo by tribe. From my experience, children are never too young to learn a language. My first child could hold a brief conversation in my language as young as 2 years of age. Her first words were Edo words and she could run errands sent in Edo language. My thoughts are that children copy us in everything, so she basically picked all those words from hearing me talk, sometimes to her, other times to others. It's a deliberate activity. I would give the instruction in Edo (to get her attention), repeat it in English (to help her associate the words and sentence construction), say it again in Edo, then watch her carry out the activity. They are never too young, it's a game of deliberate repetition. It's always easier with the first too. So please do not relent. ❤❤❤🧡

I'm confused, that you think you have to teach them your native language. Children pick the language up, from the first day they live. They can learn both at the same time. I now several international families, that are not speaking only one language. But it means that every parent talks only in their native language to them. Without exception, until the kid are fluently speaking. It works perfectly. Your husband should have learned at least to understand , so he can follow any conversation. My best friends kids are born in Germany, they speak German to her, Bulgarian to him. She doesn’t speak Bulgarian, but understands it. Her husband speaks German perfectly, but only Bulgarian to the kids. And he'd never answer, when they use the wrong language. Sometimes they changes within seconds. That’s very funny when you don’t know them, but very effective. They will have a stronger and a weaker language, usually the one in wich country they live in. But when they meet the family, it takes 10 min to fully dive into the other language . It's easier this way around, I know. You should at least speak only portugese when you’re at home and involve you husband in the process. It's a natural thing for children to lean to speak, they don’t mind to learn two.

You could easily talk to him in Portuguese, only. I know it might be hard to remember to talk to him in Portuguese all the time, but video calls with your family and at least talking to him all the time you're alone with him or even making him feel smarter asking him to translate what his dad is saying or something like that. There's a channel called As Matutas, they're from Recife. There are really good videos of Rosa saying how she made her teaching process work with her daughter. Some games and stuff helped her. My native Language is Spanish and my husbands is French. We met and live in us so of course we communicate in English. My son is 15 months and I don’t know how to go about this, he’s constantly exposed to all three languages. I wonder if it’s going to take him longer to speak for this reason. Very helpful video. Aylin Cabrera do the one language per parent and they will catch up eventually with English Be patient and persevere and he will speak the 3 languages eventually. Children are amazing. I son is doing great with 3 languages and saw another kids that have no problems switching between languages.

Just thought I’d reassure you that he will be fine! My mum is Colombian and stopped teaching me Spanish when I went to school at 4 as she was concerned i’d get confused but now wishes she had continued. When my brother and sister came along she carried on and they are both fluent in Spanish in a way I’m not and it had no impact on their ability to pick up English. I understand a lot of Spanish and have a good ear but my confidence in speaking it (especially in front of my Mum) is very low so would definitely urge you to keep going. Good luck!

My daughter is trilingual. My husband and I both speak Spanish. we talked to her in spanish since she was born until age 10. My husband also knows French so he would talk to her in French (read books, watch French cartoons together and sing together). she started going to school at age 4 so she learned english at school (we live in the US). when she was around 7 we started attending church meetings in French, and of course while that happened she was getting exposed to English and Spanish. she is 13 yrs old now and has never had a problem learning and understanding the languages. never had a speech problem. does amazing at school (not to be bragging, but she is a straight A student), plays piano and violin. I'm telling you this so you can get a bigger idea on what it is. I hope it helps. don't give up, and keep speaking to your child in different languages. it is not easy, but definitely worth it. kids are very very smart. don't underestimate their strengths.

Alyn my experience of bilingue children is that many children start to speak later and first they mix langues But don't wory they will learn and then they speak 2 lanhues.

Don't bother speaking to him in English. He will pick it up SOO FAST. It's all around him once he reaches school he'll pick it up. There will be small problems at the beginning. Don't let anyone tell you it will make him dumb. Hell be slow to learn English at the beginning but will catch up with all the other kids very quick. Studies have proved this. Before alot of parents thought thought that not speaking English at home was bad for the kid but that's been proven wrong. my friend understands German because his grandparents only spoke to him in German everytime they say him. he always thought it was super annoying, but he appreciates at least being able to understand. i think the more you can speak to him, or even have your family speak to him when they call to speak to you, the better. if you can find popular kids cartoons in your language, or music that would be good too.

We speak three languages my wife and I. Arabic, Swedish and English we are thinking of speaking Arabic and English at home with our daughter and when it comes to Swedish she should be able to learn it from the day care and school later on :) I am not sure if it is the best strategy actually but this is why I am here :)

I am in the same situation as you. Canadian husband who doesn’t speak Spanish and I’m here on my own. My son knows a few words but speaking the language to them when they are older and don’t have interest in learning it is really hard. I will try to schedule time to speak Spanish as you suggested. 15mins a day should make a difference. My son is 7 and we both love baking so maybe that can be our thing.

The most important thing is to make the moments you have with him in Portuguese pleasant and meaningful. To be meaningful, the language has to be part of his world and must also be comunicative. I gave a seminar to parents enroling their children in a program for teaching Portuguese as a heritage language. Your methods are good, and can gradually become more communicative, when you talk to him in your daily life, making questions, asking, giving him structures to answer, and later on, when he starts school (or earlier if possible) mingle him with other children who speak Portuguese. Regarding the age of your daughter, do the same with her. A child is never too young to learn one or more languages, mainly this language being her family language (a heritage language). I am a PhD in linguistics and teach at UQ, in Australia. I am also pedagogical coordinator of Raizes Brasileiras, a Brazilian community language school in Brisbane. I often wonder if what I'm doing is enough to raise them bilingual, but you are absolutely right - making Portuguese pleasant and meaningful are the most important things. They always associate it with songs that they like and to speaking to their vovó, so there's always a connection and an element of fun. I'm slowly increasing the amount of Portuguese I speak to them, but I won't pretend it comes naturally to me, when I live in an English speaking country, surrounded by English speakers and without any Portuguese speakers around me. You can speak strictly to your children in Portuguese and to your husband in English. They will get a lot of exposure to English on a daily basis the more you can speak your language with them the better.

I have the same issue, but I came up with something that helps a lot. Whenever I think (in English) whatever I want to say, I translate it in my head then verbalize. It has really helped me. It also means I don't rush to say things whenever I want to speak my native language. I take my time

I think the best method is the "One parent, one language". If you are around your childrens (without your spouse , because if he dosen't speak portugese then it is harder) you have to speak only portugese, especial with your smaller child.

I know exactly what you mean! I live in the UK but I am from Norway. And when my 2 youngest kids were small we spoke Norwegian at home until they were about 3 (they are now 5 and 7) but sadly because of no Norwegian here - and my husband not speaking the language - it stopped...and now I'm trying to teach them again. My oldest is bilingual as he's born and raised in Norway (he's 13) but he's sadly not much help for me hahaha as he prefers to speak English!! :p I am trying to find bilingual books (since they can both read) and at dinner, I try to point out things and what they are called. I have tried to put on Norwegian cartoons etc - but that's not very popular... :( And I recognize the "my husband doesn't speak" because we have the same problem, which was one of the reasons why I stopped -because he would feel left out...though I feel that after almost 10 years he really should have learned it by now - at least so much that he could follow a conversation.

Unfortunately that is usually how it goes. I made the mistake of not keeping up my Spanish with mine. I always spoke to them mostly in Spanish to then when they couldn't speak. But given that relatives and our surroundings are predominantly English, they lost it. I gotta get back on it. Hence why I am here

I was raised bilingual as i have one parent from the Uk and one from Hungary and this has scared me for years. My dad spoke English and so did my mum but I spent my first 8 years in Hungary and so I can speak both but I have no idea how to carry this on (dont have kids yet)

We are in an Arab country and my kids understand Arabic but they talk English because me and my wife are working and we preferred to put them with Phillipines family whose speak English and what brought me here is I don't know I feel we done a mistake in that. So me and the mother decided that she talks with the kids in Arabic and I talk with them in English but still when thier mom talk to them in Arabic they reply in English and what I wanted is when I talk to them in English they reply in English and when we talk to them in Arabic they reply in Arabic. I don't know if anyone has similar like my problem and give me an advice.

Sou americana morando aqui no Brasil e falo com meu filho só em inglês, e meu marido fala em português com ele. Meu marido fala muito bem inglês e eu falo portuguese tbm então na nossa casa a gente troca linguás bastante pra deixar o nosso filho ouvir as duas. Mas quando e só eu e meu filho e só inglês! Seria muito bom pra você falar com seus filhos quando e só você e eles em casa! Ai depois quando seu marido chegar, você pode trocar pra inglês. Não vai ser confundido pra eles. I am Greek living in the UK and I was exactly in the same situation as you. No family here and had a daughter with an English man . It was very hard for me too. I think its crucial to have the support of your partner, he has to know your language otherwise it will be very hard to practice because he won't know what you are saying and its limiting to do it only when he is not there. Me I have been talking Greek to my daughter non stop from the day she was born regardless if we are alone or not but my partner has put her off replying to me in Greek when she was keen and that stopped her in her tracks. So today she is 15 she understands everything I say but her own capability of replying in Greek is very limited. I tried to teach her how to write or read as well and she has some capability of doing that but again very limited.Its crucial to have the partner really on board, extremely supportive be part of it not an observer otherwise you are very limited. People unfortunately don't realise the implications of having kids with a foreigner in their own country they take it lightly don't think it through.

I'm Norwegian lilving in the UK, with a UK husband. Sadly I stopped speaking Norwegian to my kids when they hit about age 2-3 (especially my daughter) because of the problems it caused us at home (my husband not understanding caused him to feel left out..) and I am now desperate to try and start again. They know many words, and do understand more than they let on - but like you I have no family here, no friends, and hardly ever speak it. I do have an older child who is fluant in both - but speaks English to his siblings haha. I just feel stuck trying to get this started properly as they are already 8 and 6. They find it a bit boring when I am trying. :/

Just stick with it. I moved to Israel when I was 8, not knowing a single word, and with a very different language French). A few months were enough to control the new language. Norwegian is closer to English + they are already used to hear it and know some words. Just start talking to them in Norwegian, and only in this language, at least as long as Dad is not around. Don't panic and go back to English. They will try to push you, don't give up. They will thank you enormously when they'll be grown up. They still are young enough for it. Go for it!

I don't have any kids but I have nieces and nephews. My brother is married to an Ecuadorian woman who has tried in vain to teach their children Spanish but they don't want to learn. My sister has daughters and I'm teaching them Spanish and French. They can understand some words and phrases however I'm leaning towards getting them a tutor. Anybody who doesn't teach their child a second language is doing them a *HUGE* disservice especially here in America where people don't have to learn English when they come here. If you want a job here, it's mandatory for the most part to be bilingual (mainly Spanish and English).
