Bruford is such a mathematical drummer yet manages to both swing and have his own unique approach to the instrument. One of the greats.

His drumming is so hypnotizing... And listen to the amount of sounds he gets out of that one drum kit.

Seen Bill 3x in my life ....Crimson '82 Earthworks '85 and ABWH '89. All three times he blew me away. He was like a metronome in his timing, and he did it all with his wrists it seemed. He wouldn't spill a cup of tea balanced 6 inches away! Betcha the guy has NO joint troubles, or ''rotator cuff issues''. xD

Nice to hear Bill play jazz He was a lecturer at ACM where I studied drums and he spoke about the artistic difference between a product or a process. Very thoughtful and inspiring person.

Lovely stuff. And Bill's drumming just flows. It's beautiful. So fluid! He talks like a musician and plays like a musician; he just happens to be a percussionist. Bravo, Mr B! I thought his solo [starting at around 29:30] was an absolute delight - full of ideas, dynamics and surprises. 🙃

Thank god he went back to an acoustic kit

Smooth as butter. Complete mastery of technique allows him to flow unconsciously into the music with infinite ease and grace. You must master the technical aspects of your instrument before you can abandon technique and just EXIST with others in a state of constant creation. Glad Bill found some equally talented musicians and a less ringy snare drum sound.

Hello everybody: the piece that runs from 23:58 to 34:55 is "The wooden man sings and the stone woman dances", with "The drum also waltzes" solo included. Plus, Mark Hodgson's bass solo starts with a phrase of that same piece. Enjoy!

Su instrumento se proyecta en él como una parte mas de su ser, por éso no le cuesta nada hacer lo que hace. Por y para siempre Bill.

Hot band. Bill's always been a favorite of mine but I hate to admit I never checked out his Earthworks band before. My chagrin over my ignorance is large.

I saw them in San Diego around 2008?. Tim Garland was on Sax, and he stole the show. I was expecting to be blown away by Bruford but he was just happy to let the other guys shine. Thanks Bill. And thanks for posting this video. My father was with me, and he has had a stroke since, so I don't think he remembers this. I'm going to show this to him and see if he remembers.

They played in Brazil on that tour too, but I had a gig that night too and could not go. One of the things I most regret in my life.

notice that in this rendering of 'The Drum Also Waltzes' the central kick/hat theme is in 5..

I really don't understand why anyone thinks it's a good idea to place interview footage on top of the music performance. It's like the director decided that it's instrumental so it must be okay to use as background music. Infuriating.

I suspect that a big part of it is to reduce its bootleg value.

the problem with upright bass, he's playing his ass off, and still buried in the mix. unfortunately, to be heard well, he needs to play electric.

Humpty dumpty - chick corea, bob berg, steve gadd and eddie Gomez is the only jazz recording that comes to mind where an upright bass was mixed nicely to me, check it out

The shame is that U.S. jazz radio plays little, if any European jazz. A great pity.

Yep. It does kinda spoil things. But... as someone else has already said in the Comments, it's most likely done to deter people from releasing bootleg copies of the gig. Oh, what a world we live in... 🤭
