Bill Buckner’s World Series error against the Mets gets a deep rewind | 1986

You're probably familiar with the moment where Mookie Wilson's grounder goes through Bill Buckner's legs in the 1986 World Series. But do you know about everything that got us to that moment, including a rogue parachuter, a freak spring training injury that almost blinded Wilson, the heroics of Dave Henderson, a Red Sox-Mets trade, and a whole lot more?

I'm a long time Mets fan, and I've always felt that Buckner wasn't the goat of the game. The real monkey wrench for the Bosox was Bob Stanley who's wild pitch set up the play. Frankly, even if Buckner fields the ball, I don't think it would've ended the inning. Mookie had good speed and I think he would've made it to first. I doubt Knight would score. But it would have Knight at third with HoJo coming to bat. And Stanley still on the mound.

I went to thus game when I was 12 years old with my dad. We were fortunate enough to have season tickets that year. I remember people leaving Shea stadium in the eighth inning, thinking the game was over. I started to get tears in my eyes, because it didn’t look good for the Mets. I asked my father if we were going to leave early? He told me no, at least we’ll be able to see a team win the World Series live. He was trying to make me feel better, which I didn’t know at the time. All I remember was the amazing Mets making an unbelievable comeback, and people were running back into Shea stadium to see it. I remember after the game, driving through queens with my dad, and everyone was outside going nuts. One of the best memories I e ever seen in sports, and I got to share it with my father.

I was there that night, too. Your perception of how tickets were distributed is flawed. The gentleman who was there as a kid with his father is telling the truth. What he omitted, and may not have known, is that his father, as a season ticket, or package plan holder, had the option to buy post season tickets before the remainder were released to the public. Full season ticket holders could buy tickets for all the home games, a maximum of 7, which, in this case, all got played. Package plan holders, like me, could buy half the games. In my case, I got game 4 of the NLCS, and games 2 and 6 of the World Series. What you didn't get was the seats you had in the regular season. My regular season seats had been in the Mezzanine, between home and first. My post season seats were in the Upper Deck out in Right Field, just on the foul side of the foul pole. I got a good close look at the skydiver as he made his approach to landing. So, the point of the story is that the gentleman is telling the truth on how his father got him into game 6.

Ortmeyer41 the real key point was the game was already tied by then. The real goat, honestly, is Schiraldi, though some could argue that a closer shouldn't be asked to pitch three innings in the first place. Incidentally, Clemens and McNamara tell opposite stories, Clemens claiming he was pulled against his wishes in the 8th, while McNamara said his pitcher told him he was finished, as he had thrown over 140 pitches.

howie9751 he may not have been wrong though. They were in spring training in March of 1993 and him and two other pitchers, Steve Olin and Tim Crews went on a boat ride in a lake near crews’ home. Crews was the captain and was drunk at the time. The boat rammed into a pier and killed Crews and Olin. Ojeda was injured and the sole survivor but didn’t play until late in the season and was never the same. He retired after the 1994 season. Id love to see a rewinder on the 1980s US-USSR hockey game, but I dont think that game was symbolized by a single moment in the game, but rather by Al Michaels' legendary "Do you believe in Miracles?! I feel the 72 Summit goal by Paul Henderson was more of a fantastic sports moment in terms of actual hockey goals.

3:12 - so there's actually an upload of that charity game, in full, here on KZbin, and so I looked to see if I could find this play; and it turns out that despite what multiple news reports have said about the game, Buckner actually *was not* the first baseman in that incident. Buckner did play in that game, he got on base in his second of two token at-bats in the 3rd and was replaced by Pat Dodson, a rookie who would make his _official_ Major League debut the next day against Minnesota, as a pinch runner. Dodson was the one who committed the error in the 4th, not Buckner.

Bill had a 20+ year career playing big league ball. That speaks for itself. Many guys don't see a career one third of that length. Had the Sox bullpen taken care of things prior to, his moment of infamy never happens. Had they not blown it again in Game 7, it would barely be remembered.

Then we saw that bloop hit through Buckner's legs and the entire packed place went "....AWWWwww whattt??"...and the entire bar cleared out!
