The biggest curse-ending moment in baseball history demands a deep rewind | 2016 World Series Game 7

Күн бұрын

This is perhaps the most important at-bat in baseball history. With two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, the Chicago Cubs stared down Cleveland looking for one final out.
The difference between an out and a hit -- potentially a walk-off hit -- would determine which curse reached its end: Chicago's painful, generations-long "Billy Goat Curse" or Cleveland's own long history of defeat on the biggest stage.
This moment was so big that it kind of buried how absurd the whole game was. Chicago had come back to tie the series, but experienced some bad breaks, then fully blew their substantial lead when Rajai Davis homered off typically lights-out closer Aroldis Chapman. After more bad breaks, Chicago finally pulled ahead again thanks to more heroics in the top of the tenth, but in this moment, stood one big hit-- and more scoring from Davis-- away from blowing it all again.
Before we watch this monumental baseball event, we have so much rewinding to do.

Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, going into it, was arguably the most hyped and most significant game in the history of baseball. As a Giants fan with no horse in the race, I was excited to watch history. The game itself, very fortunately, did not disappoint, and only elevated its significance IMHO.

@davidpolaski4051
@davidpolaski4051 3 жыл бұрын
He never should have pitched game 6. The Cubs had a huge lead late in the game, and Madden put him out there anyway and made what was an already tired pitcher, exhausted. Had he not done that, he probably has enough gas left in his arm to get through the final 4 outs of game 7 without giving up any runs.

Me, an Indians fan: Oh man I can't wait to see the next episode of Rewinder! SB Nation: You sure? Heartbreaking to come so close, however I'm glad we lost to the Cubs, because they were the only team I was comfortable losing to. To go that long without a WS win, and decades without even a WS appearance, we couldn't have lost to a more deserving team. Wish we had our pitching staff at full health, but this was a great series, and even though it ended in heartbreak, Rajai's homer still gets me amped every single time despite knowing the outcome.

It was one thing to lose to another deserving team but it was like "oh god if we have to lose fine but just please not like this". I was so emotionally drained when they won I didnt even have an over the top reaction left in me. I let out maybe one yell but just kinda sat there in shock and fought back a tear. Then my friends from Chicago started calling and sending me videos of them partying in Wrigleyville cause they knew I wished I could be there.

The home run by David Ross was simply poetic. A mediocre but serviceable veteran on the brink of retirement, gets called into Game 7 of the World Series as the backup catcher, and after getting brained by a wild pitch, still stands up there to hit a huge home run off of one of the most feared pitchers in baseball, leading his team to a championship. If that's not a beautiful way to go out, I don't know what is.
@0mathgaming

Especially since it was his last at-bat ever. It wasn't his final plate appearance as he drew a walk later in the game before being replaced, but it was his final at-bat. There are few players in the history of MLB whose final at-bat was a home run, and only one other player did so in a World Series game.

One crazy thing that Mike Montgomery mentions in Tom Verducci’s book about him coming in is that in the bullpen and in his warmup he did not throw a single strike and Maddon did not know that. So the only strikes he threw that night were the two that he threw when he came in.

One of the weirdest things I've ever seen in sports. I don't understand how you blow up a team so recent off of a world series win so casually, that's not been done often, not through trades anyways cuz when it does happen it happens cuz 1 or multiple of the big players on said team become free agents and don't choose to resign with the team. But in this case the cubs simply decided to trade everyone away at once.

This series was so good for baseball. I am a die hard Yankee fan (currently hoping they have a little comeback of their own) and I was so invested in this series. I didn’t care too much if either team won but deep deep deep down inside I had so much hope for the cubs. So many years of just bad luck were thrown out the window on this final play. I remember I went to a sports bar with a girl I met on Tinder and I was so into this game that I paid her virtually no mind. We never hung out again but I’m ok with that because I was able to witness history.

Steven Delgado Same here Bro. I am also a Yankees fan with no dog in the fight. However this game 7 will always bring a smile to my face on a personal level for this reason. My Mother had died just a couple of weeks earlier in Mid October. Between losing the most important person in my life and also even around the backdrop of the circus aka the infamous 2016 Presidential campaign dividing America and much of the world as well, caused even a tear in eye when the game ended. Not so much the Cubs ended their so called “curse” but how watching this legendary game 7 on November 2, 2016 kind of put a closure of a very sad 😢 month for my family. So this is why this game will always be remembered on a personal level to me almost as much as the entire 2001 World Series for 9/11.

I had a a ha moment during 2021. I got a recommendation for the Cubs on KZbin and had no interest in watching the video. I now appreciate other teams for what they are. Going to bars and restaurants to watch the NLCS and World Series. Thanks to some political ad, I started tapping my foot to a rhythm and chanting whichever Cub was at the plate ( I started it when the Cubs weren't hitting well against the Dodgers and right after I started, Rizzo started hitting again, so I kept on doing it). I remember watching game 7 with some classmates and during the rain delay, I was the only one who stayed and I got to see the curse end. Everyone left at the bar hugged each other and I walked home, which took longer than normal because every few steps I would just stop and be amazed that it actually happened. With that said Ideally the World Series first pitch should no later than be at 735pm et. And then return 1 late afternoon game as well as was played every year until 1987. Under for instance using the current 2019 Series format, I would use one of the middle games at Washington Nationals Park. Probably Game 5 on Sunday afternoon 10/27 with a 5pm ET start to avoid going up Sunday Night NFL match-up. Plus it’s Start of the new work and school week as well for most viewers and fans at the game as well. An alternative day for late afternoon game using the ‘19 series schedule would be on Friday for Game 3.

As a major NBA basketball fan that has a causal interest in baseball, no game will ever compare the the rollercoaster of emotions and storylines that was this game. I’ll never forget it.

Game 7 was definitely one of the best games of baseball I've seen in my lifetime. It was all based on the drama of the Cubbies, a team who has not won a World Series in over a century and they defied all odds to come back and finally get the win even with the Indians breathing down their neck when they tied the game. It was a perfect ending and it's only a shame the Cubs just haven't managed to relive that glory since this win.
