A 32-minute photo/video presentation of my expedition to Mt. Everest this year. There is some great footage of both the South and North sides of Everest, including (i) the treacherous landing and takeoff at Lukla airport, (ii) the 35-mile trek to Base Camp on the South side, (iii) Base Camp South, (iv) crossing the ladders in the Khumbu Icefall taken with my video sunglasses, (v) an exciting helicopter ride from Lobuche to Lukla, (vi) the bumpy road to Base Camp North, (vii) Base Camp North, (viii) moving up the vertical headwall to the North Col, (ix) moving from Camp 1 to Camp 3 in bad weather and (x) summit night in a storm on May 19-20, including footage of my turnaround decision at the Second Step
See my website eightsummits.com "Bill's Articles" "Summit Night 2012" for the full story behind the 2012 expedition

Smart man. That is how you stay alive on Everest. Knowing when to go down. God Bless!

People who post bad comments make me laugh. He didn't reach the summit. He deserves a lot of respect for that. Many people would have ignored their body needs to reach the summit and die. He did good and he's alive now. It's way better than being there posting mean comments. Keep up Mr. Burke, you can be proud of yourself. = )

Agree totally!! A LOT of the ones who collapse and die on the way down do so after ignoring warning signs.

Bill, wherever you are, I salute you. This may be the best Everest video I've seen. Your decision to turn around was sound and wise. I certainly hope you have no regrets. I salute the sherpas, too, especially those men who break trail and set the fixed ropes. And the unknown numbers of unknown porters. What an adventure!

I'm really glad you made the decision to down!! That is HUGE especially after climbing so far! I read your website and have learned from you that it isn't so much about summiting the mountain as it is about learning, persevering and reiterating, for oneself, respect for one of the most magnificent natural wonders of our world. Thank you! You are truly inspiring.

We are always about the summit and never the journey. This is the best account of Everest I have seen online, thanks mate! I would like to think that if I ever planned to summit Everest, I wouldn't go to the absolute top...you always have to leave a bit more for the imagination.

You did the right thing. It is never too late to turn back. Better turn back and be alive. Sometimes nearly is good enough and with such a tremendous difficulty and danger that altitude causes, in my opinion "nearly" on Mount Everest is more than good enough.

Sir, thank you so much for sharing this with all of us, I have great respect for you & applaud you for recognizing the storm, listening to your body & being in control of your ego...sadly, many who climb are not! You climbed both sides of the mountain so you’ve actually pushed beyond summit! I wish so many others would enjoy the adventure & not turn into a Gollum fixated on only that one goal, no matter the cost! I’ll be heading over to your blog now to read on your experience, I just really wanted to thank you. -namaste

Wow Bill, been researching this for a while, but your video gives a very realistic picture of what its like. Much respect to you for having a go, easy for armchair watchers to criticise, but I really think i know how hard this is. The final night looks like hell on earth, I am sure your decision to turn around was very hard and easy at the same time. Very well done !

Whats important to do before an attempt to climb the summit is to make sure you are in a good physical and mental form. Make sure you have a good breathing technic. The most important thing to look for before you do the climb is the weather. If these things are ok you can make it.

Just because you are visiting the lower camps, does not mean by any means that you are a Mountaineer. Everest is known as the tallest mountain on Earth for a reason you know. And the North side is the mor difficult route. My Uncle was killed trying to map a route over Everest using both the North and South sides. However it was on the way down, that he was killed by an icefall at the Khumbu glacier.

I'm from San Francisco. Our winter nights are around 40-45 degrees with maybe 10 nights dropping to freezing. My question is, what's the most comfortable weather for climbing? Does a cloud cover ever move in, maybe start snowing, but the weather warms up and the coldest days/nights are when it's clear? Would you rather have it clear and windy or cloudy, snowing and warmer when climbing? I can understand the view is much better when clear, but for comfort, what is the best?
