Well, look at Lovecraft, one of the best american writers, and one of the best horror writers ever. A couple years ago they tried to cancel him because he was racist. Yep, like pretty much everyone in the US in the 1920s, when he lived. It's a bad thing, but it was a product of the time he lived on. Another example is sexual orientation, or better the discrimination of sexual orientation: in Classical Greece and in Rome homosexuality was normal, it wasn't something to burn someone at the stake for. That became a thing thanks to the Abrahamic Religions, and in some parts of the world homosexuality is still punishable by death. Meanwhile Alexander the Great had a sentimental and sexual relationship with Hephaestion, one of his commanders, and some historians think the grief resulting from his lover's death was what caused Alexander to become careless with his health, dying soon after.

John Wayne once said, "Life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid."
@F1rstWorldNomaD Жыл бұрын
Im not convinced thats true tho. For a smart person who becomes dumb, trough an accident or old age or whatever, it probably is. But the happiest people with the least problems Ive ever met are really quite dumb. Most of the time they quite lliterally "dont have a care in the world" If someone is stupid, they tend to not know they are which makes it a non issue for them and, for reasons beyond my comprehension, things seem to just go their way in a vastly disproportional fashion. Its like actually taking procausions and analyze things somehow lowers the odds of whatever you hope to achieve and just "doing it" without a second thought seem to have an awfully high success rate... atleast when someone else does it. Most of the people I know who are happily married are also in this category. Theyre just content with life, dont look for or need "to spice up their lives" or whatever bs people say to justify cheating or "open relationships", they dont care about politics or social media, they are completely happy working manual labor at the docks, diggin ditches or driving a forklift for fakking decades on end without getting depressed or even striving for more. Its all anecdotal ofc... but in my experience it seems like being stupid is actually the most successful way to have an easy, happy life. "Ignorance is bliss" is a timeless saying and probably for good reason. There was also another commedian, cant remember who, that said something along the lines of "Being stupid is alot like being dead, its only painful for everyone else"

I am a huge BB fan for several reasons I won’t get into here. He says some as you say “crude” or outlandish statements, often to get a reaction or sharpen attention of the audience. But he’s intentional in getting people not to quickly form judgments, but to look at things on a deeper level or from another point of view that has validity as well. It reminds me that we don’t walk in an other person’s shoes. Their journey, circumstances, and experiences are very real to them and perhaps offer us an alternative way of seeing life, through their lens, thereby expanding our understanding of the human experience. By the way, I stumbled on your channel via an algorithm and I find you very engaging. You also turned me on to the free Yale courses! Thank you!❤

In my opinion it is Oskar Schindler (from movie Schindler's List), who has one of the best character transformation and all the more powerful, because it was not just some fictional character, but real human being. Beginning of the movie shows him as someone, who will exploit anyone just to earn as much money as possible, turning a blind eye to atrocities committed right before his eyes (even trying to excuse Amon Göth's monstrous behaviour at one point) just to gradually turn around and start saving Jews to the point that he bankrupted himself and wept he didn't have more money to save more. From selfish Nazi to selfless saviour of Jews: Best character Arc ever. Oh and if you want character transformation in opposite direction just watch Breaking Bad.

Hey NP you should check out the interview with Barbara Walters that Sean Connery did in 1976 i believe. She asks him is it ever ok to hit a woman. His response was only as an absolute last resort if a man is trying to walk away from an argument and the woman continues to pursue him and physically stop him from leaving. He also said to use the back of an open hand not a fist. He also told Barbara that in 34 years of marriage he had never raised a hand to his wife because Barbara asked him if he ever hit his wife. Hopefully that will give a better context to his statements.

This all came about during his first marriage to Diane Cilento. It got the reputation of being stormy and sometimes physical. He probably did hit or at least push her but it has always sounded to me as if it was in response to being attacked by her first.

Correct. Cancel culture = cyber bullying. Always look at the content, not the form. The standards for form change over time, and they depend a lot on trends, cultural influence, political influence, etc. The content remains the same. That's how anyone can tell what's right and what's wrong without anybody else "teaching" them. By stripping away all the cosmetic, irrelevant, fickle and inconstant aspects and focusing on the substance.

I should thank you for introducing me to Bill Burr. For some bizarre reason I was very familiar with Dave Chappelle, but had never heard of Bill. Now that I have, I have hardly stopped laughing since. I think some dead people should be cancelled, or at least remembered for their bad stuff as well as any good they have been credited with, but in reasonable historical context - it depends on how bad their bad stuff was, I guess. Examples: Winston Churchill, Gandhi, Mother Theresa. And while I think of it, if you believe she was a real person, Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute - I don't know how she acquired that label, but there is nothing in the Synoptic Gospels to suggest that she was. As for Nazi stuff - all kinds of mechanical stuff, probably the most obvious being VolksWagen. As a kid I had an adopted Polish Jewish uncle whose parents died in the Holocaust, and he made me promise that I would never buy a VW while he was alive. I guess I should wait now until Bill gets stuck into Megan Rapinoe and the US Women's Football Team that just crashed out of the World Cup - I think I saw that Dave Chappelle had already had a go at her. They won't be alone - she's going to be copping it for a long time now. She's not dead yet, obviously, but her soccer career is over.

I must say even though the movie of Great Expectations(1946) was a good representation of the book, I still feel like they did not do it justice, but it is hard to transfer the great detail that Dickens produces in his writings into a film without it being super long and tedious. The depth of some characters did not at all get any chance in the film. I also recommend the book Miramar by Naguib Mahfouz if you have not read yet. There is two very different characters and both of them go through major changes throughout the book and they're sorta opposite to one another in some ways, it's an excellent book by one of my favourite arabic writers.

Some of the references are for old people. The monkey with the long-haul trucker is from a Clint Eastwood movie called 'Every Which Way But Loose. Books are normally better than movies. If you don't know who Joseph Campbell is, he was a brilliant sociologist, he wrote many books on the universal nature of myths in every society. My favorite book of his is The Hero With A Thousand Faces, it describes the Hero's Journey and the change to the person and to society as a result. I helped on a term-paper where we analyzed the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, a perfect example of the Hero's Journey and the transformation or change of the individual going through it.
