They forgot to bring in a harmonica player. Tommy Morgan did so for the show's closing theme.

You and most KB. Bill has often said that he would purposely incorporate some Lou Rawls grit into his vocals because he was such a huge fan. He would take your comment as a compliment, I'm quite sure. Speaking of this particular song though, here's an interesting excerpt from one of Bill's interviews back in 2011: "But if one of the series' stars had his way, Champlin might have been replaced. "During the fifth year of the show, Carroll O'Connor called the producer and said: 'I want to get rid of the black guy singing the theme. I'm really good friends with Robert Goulet,'" Champlin (who is white) laughed. "Me or Robert Goulet? That's the story of my life." Yep, that's Bill! Thanks for listening ;-)
