I like how they did effectively give the win to both of them. In that Bill can't cross dimensional barriers but Discord can, and that would normally decide a battle. But at the same time the rules of Death Battle explicitly require a fatality, so Battle Field Removal would not work. So the idea to have Bill kill Discord but Discord BFR him was very well thought out.

I think that it rather was that he was slowly "fixing" the place before trapping Bill. First you can see the ponies floating without being statues, then the bubbles and mosnters are gone and finally he teleports Bill to his dimention. All of that and the way he hugs the yellow pony's flag makes me feel that Discord alredy knew from the start that he wouldn't beat Bill so he just distracted him long enough to repair all the chaos and then trap him

I like the spoiler hidden at the start; Discord starts the fight writing a letter to Celestia saying Bill would learn an important lesson about Friendship. In the end, he sacrifices himself to dump Bill back in the Nightmare Realm to protect his friends, the letter he wrote to them can be seen on the other side of the portal before it shuts. Discord was never going to win, so he prepared in advance and used Bill's tunnel vision against him to win the war instead of the battle, saving his friends even though he couldn't win. He did indeed teach Bill a lesson.

What's more, he did it the same way Bill lost last time. When he says "I've seen your show" he wasn't talking about recreating the literal events of Bill's death, as it looked like. He was talking about making Bill overfocus on a goal (killing him), making Bill underestimate him (by making him think he took he misunderstood why Bill lost and took it to literally), and he performed the same type self-sacrifice Stan did, something Bill simply can't understand and thus never predicts. I also assume that what's written on that letter is a goodbye to Fluttershy, he just passed it off as a joke so Bill wouldn't suspect anything.

@@transfandomman1699 I think it's more Discord knowing he doesn't have to do anything anymore, he saved his friends and his home, he knows Bill's fate is sealed, as a concept himself, Discord will likely come back thanks to his friends, that letter you mentioned was also being written at the start of the battle about the importance of friendship and ultimately, that's why Discord gets the higher ground as he'll return back to his friends, but Bill is still stuck in his realm.

This fight's ending was kind of genius, actually. Really think about it; Discord probably knew he would lose the fight. Hence why he left that letter behind for the others. And Bill was so hyperfocused on killing Discord, who could still keep up using his tricks, that he never realized that the two of them had left Equestria. Discord dies at the end, yes. But by the endcard's own admission, as long as chaos still exists, Discord will come back, even if it's not quick enough to continue the battle. So what did he do? He traps Bill back in his home dimension. Bill won, sure. But nobody likes to see the bad guy get the last laugh, right?

Tricking Bill into going back to his dimension was his plan from the beginning. At 15:12, the "invaded Equestria" does not have weirdness bubbles and at 15:34 the portal's color is blue instead of red at the start. That was when Discord took the fight to the Nightmare Realm disguised as Equestria by him and Bill didn't realize in his hyperfocus on defeating him. Discord's attempt at invading Bill's mind was further stalling to provoke and distract him as well, that's why he said "it was worth a try". It was never about winning for Discord. It was about saving his friend's friends

Usually characters in Death Battle fight for no reason other than the occasional bloodlusted character or misunderstanding motive, but due to the context they found themselves in, Bill had the clear goal he was always shooting for since millenia. Because it's canon in both verses that there are infinite universes with infinite possibilities, this is canon in another timeline. The setting is just what Bill's wanted and struggled for for so long. It was freedom in a new dimension for him to conquer. This felt like a climactic story battle that would have took place after several arcs foreshadowing Bill's return and the big showdown. I never watched MLP, but from what I've read in the comments, this was a rare battle in which Discord was fighting for someone other than himself. Discord's goal was to save the ponies. If it meant killing Bill, that was no problem, but saving his friends was his top priority. In the end however, he died, but not before getting the slip on Cypher and sending him back. Did he cause it? Maybe. Did he end it? Definitley. Discord lost the battle but he won the war. Cypher will have to start all over again and take who knows how long to get out of his dimension, but next time, the ponies will probably have prepared by then and avenge their comrade who avenged them.

Technically Bayonetta managed it, but it wasn't intentional: the setup for that battle was Dante's entire goal being her - alive - which he didn't realize and expressed in exactly the worst way. Presumably he's now going to have to find a way to revive her... and probably can. (I do like that setup because it fits both series' narrative flavours: Bayonetta relies on the very long planning, little of it her own, to ensure whatever she feels like doing in the moment will turn out to have been the correct choice, while Devil May Cry lets Dante make loads of critical mistakes on the grounds that he's expected to be both capable and willing to then fix all of them.)

I appreciate that even losing Discord succeeded in his goal, protecting his friends. Death Battle is, by its very nature, pairing up beings who would never fight in a duel to the death, no holding back even if the character themselves would not kill. This is one of the few ones where a without question EVIL individual fought a mostly good guy. And while the bad guy was much more powerful, in the end he still didn’t “win”. Discord achieved his goal, protecting his friends. I like that.

You know, weird observation, but rewatching some of my favorite Death Battles...THIS is the first time one of the combatants has cared more about the world they were fighting on than winning the fight itself. Like, seriously, this is the first time when both combatants CAN destroy a planet without blinking an eye, and one of them sacrifices the fight, in order to spare the world they're on. No one else in this series has given enough of a dang to preserve the world if it gives them even a slight disadvantage in the fight. Not even people like Superman, who, barring certain film versions, does NOT let himself go all out if it will endanger anyone else. Not sure what that says about the fight itself, but Pony characters tend to make this series do weird things. From Rainbow Dash eating souls, Twilight evolving mid fight, or Pinkie Pie throwing a party that defeats the hosts...neat.

Discord canonically has "Nuh Uh!" as an applicable superpower and I love that so much about him. This was basically a fight between "That Guy..." (who keeps spoiling the fun like a total jerk no one asked to be with) and everyone's favorite class clown, imo. In fact, it's a 180° to Unicron VS Galactus, given the wider sense of who both these characters are. I loved this so much. I adore how their deaths, Bill’s in his own show and Discord’s in this death battle, show their true natures. Discord died a noble death because he’d learned to care more about the world and Fluttershy than he did about himself. Meanwhile, Bill died begging and desperately trying to make a deal. He only cared about himself, so when he died, there was no solice. Only the terror of perishing after existing for over a trillion years. He went out kicking and screaming with no dignity.

Even though I destroyed him, I _know_ for a fact his chaotic powers will just send his essence back to his world, where I imagine he’s enjoying himself. Not to mention he might’ve joined me if I’d invaded his world sooner. Oh, well. You win some, you lose some. I just wish it hadn’t been that world. Fortunately, I know of another portal between that world and Stanford’s. (Something that even Sixer doesn’t know about). Once I was done with that universe, I could’ve easily moved onto Stanford’s, but I guess it’ll be vice-versa here. Either way, once I find the hidden portal to that dimension, I’ll make sure the first thing I do is settle an old score and take back what is mine!"

They went absolutely nuts with the animation on this one. My favorite part had to be when they changed into a puppet show and then Discord broke the fourth wall by becoming a hand. This fight was exactly as crazy as advertised Also the voice actors really popped off with this one, they did good performing as the characters and capturing their expressive nature. I think the ending makes sense though, given Bill is a little more of a "serious" antagonist than Discord. And I liked that they provided their other reasoning. DEATH BATTLE has always been very thorough with their research which is part of why I respect them. That and having sick animators on the team

It's actually a little more elaborate than that. It seems Discord constructed a fake copy of the Equestria world around Bill (like a box to keep him in) while moving him back into his prison dimension, so that Bill would not notice what was being done. He also presumably attacked Bill's mind despite knowing he would lose just so he could distract Bill long enough to move him.

Great battle love results. I do feel like everybody overlooks how quickly bill loses his temper (main cause, someone is as strong as him or is able to resist him. Ex: shack a tron and Stan) and how he makes mistakes while mad.

Honestly, that would just make it *more* likely that he’d be so fed up that he goes full throttle and obliterates him. (Which is technically what happened with Time Baby too) Plus, you still gotta give him credit though. I mean, he did end up figuring out the Shacktron’s weakness afterwards.

@@ICTON123 the thing with the shack is it wouldn’t have been a threat, in multiple clips we see that many of the limbs aren’t covered by the barrier. He could have just grabbed one of them and smashed it against the ground crushing everyone inside. But he got flustered and just kept punching the barrier, refusing to let something be able to stop him

⁠@@Chaos706 That’s cause in his first go in against the thing (the first giant punch), you can see that the barrier could actually extend far beyond that depending on the size blows he was trying to throw. So it’s not really his fault for not realizing it sooner.

I love how this mirrors Bill’s defeat in Gravity Falls in a lot of ways. Grunkle Stan sacrifices himself to lock Bill away to protect his family and Discord does the same.

Also, honestly even with Discord losing, this is still a best case scenario since I don't think Discord can technically truly ever die. Bill might have been able to destroy his physical and spiritual form but, chaos will always exist and the ponies might be able to bring him back with enough chaos.

You completely forgot about Discord's largest advantage. He has friends. Bill is trapped until he can find someone to release him. Discord's friends will immediately start working on reviving him.

That's a nice way to interpret the ending of the animation positively, but that counts as outside influence, thus isn't factored in. It's one of the rules of Death Battle.

I see this as a whole 'Lost the Battle, Won the War'. He may have perished and, it'll be a while before he can come back, but Wierdmageddon was averted, and his friends are safe.

That last part amazingly showed the difference between Bill and Discord. Just like Death Battle said, Discord was never TRULY evil. He was just chaotic neutral, and it just so happened that it was dangerous for the citizens of Equestria. But Bill definitely IS a force of malevolence. Bill just uses chaos and destruction to further his own conquest, and even his own underlings aren't safe from his uncaring schemes. Having friends to fight for and sacrifice yourself for... is something Bill could NEVER understand. Heck, that's how the Pines beat him, after all.

@@mrreyes5004Well said! I also adore how their deaths, Bill’s in his own show and Discord’s in this death battle, show their true natures. Discord went out laughing, saving those he cared about. He died a noble death because he cared more about the world and Fluttershy than he did about himself. Meanwhile, Bill went out begging and desperately trying to make a deal. He only cared about himself, so when he died, there was no solice. He died kicking and screaming with zero dignity.

Honestly, this might be one of the most tragic episodes ever. Not just because of Discord's sacrifice... but also because it merely kicked the can down the road. Yes, Discord banished Bill from Equestria, but Gravity Falls' canon proved that Bill can take all the time he needs to trick someone into opening the rift again (just like when he tried to get Ford to do it, then Ford rebelled, and then Bill tricked Mabel into opening it decades later). So even if Discord eventually returns, so will Bill. Over and over, fighting again and again like a funny cartoon on loop.

It makes even more sense when you consider he attacks Bill's eye first. That's when he's taken him back to the Nightmare dimension when he knew Bill wasn't looking. Discord must have played dumb when Weirdmageddon began to enter into Bill's inner circle, as we can see they are taking with each other and Bill doesn't seem to mind his presence.
