I went to high school in Vaud. One day, a friend left "Total Eclipse" on my turntable and I became a Cobham fan. When we saw the Montreux Jazz schedule that year, we bought tickets and went - it was a big deal for a couple teenagers so we couldn't believe we were there either. The next year we saw Shakti and Sun Ra and the year after that I became a jazz DJ in the US. Been one ever since.

This is an Alfonso Johnson composition. I've always heard it as a tribute to Sun Ra.

This definately the earliest footage i've seen of someone playing the Chapman Stick. I guess Alphonso (along with Levin, of course) were the first two high-profile players to use that instrument which I think first came out in 1975.

For years, the people of ofelice carried a feeling of warmth and beauty within their hearts but, as all things come to pass, their leader, Almustafa, had to depart to carry his majestic feeling of the story of life to other lands Though time and time again, his believer's knew of his departing, and although his body would be traveling far, far, ever so far away, his soul will remain with them forever and theyl remever always of Almustafa, the Beloved

7:17 - turning off the chorus brings the low-end back in... Glad they have bass-oriented chorus/vibrato pedals since then. Best musical performance ever, for me. Nothing can touch this...

Majestic Feeling! I remember Downbeat gave this album a lukewarm review, and I was beginning to realize as a teen that music criticism even if a valid effort was not relevant to me personally. And here I'm reminded why... I still like this piece a lot! It's daring in a way because it takes a long time to get to the climax which is as @jbc6 points out around 8:00 (but I love Cobham at 6:48 .. so jazzy). This is by Alphonso iirc. And Sco' smoking... yikes, back in the day, with hair...

@WahkibaJ Those toms were made by the NORTH company in the 70's. Their inventor, Roger North also had another company make them named MTI. The toms were made out of fiberglass and they stopped making in the early 1980's. - Isn't Wikipedia wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!
