Actually taking the time to say thank you when complimented and speaking eloquently in this interview shows the clear disparity between Bill Duke's generational upbringing and the youths today. He is such a timeless role model that all should emulate. I am fortunate in my life to have known someone like Bill Duke.

I experienced a touch of racism I believe only twice. It surely is a horrible thing. When Mr Dukes tried as a child to lighten his skin, is just a devastating thing. I can't imagine being in such a position as a parent during such terrible times of racism. As a parent it must tear at ones soul to know your child is going to go through severe obstacles and unfair treatment. It must be really heart wrenching to have to explain to your young child that the world is going to be cruel to you because of your skin color. I was blessed to have this cross my feed today. Even though it was chopped to just show me the early clips that more meet my typical ideals and beliefs. I had a feeling I should watch the whole thing. I could write a novel on the impact, but will try to limit my response. Two things really stuck out to me. One, which is what aligns with my established beliefs, was the phrase his parents raised him on. "We are no better than anyone else on this earth, but nobody is better than us either." (Obviously better stated at the individual level). But what really opened my eyes, was his mention of the way fears and experiences can be handed down through generations inherently. As I search for my blind spots, that is one I'd never considered or came across. I made a naive assumption that these traits were only embedded through indoctrination. Watching this was one of my steps to better understand the problem and the divide in humankind. I can only imagine the generational pain that a twisted society can cause. I feel sorrow for the black community for having to endure it. We have to break that cycle, and move forward together...somehow. Going back to what Mr. Duke said, we are no better or worse than each other. We are all part of this grand blessing we are able to experience. May we all work on ourselves to become more compassionate and caring to those we have the hardest time relating to! The greatest is Love!

Did you know that white endentured (slaves) workers and black slaves were forced to mate to produce lighter children because they were worth more
@FreedomChaser77
@FreedomChaser77 4 жыл бұрын
@@andyteakel3957 Honestly, no, but I didn't take his explanation to mean that they were forced (I may have to go back and listen to that portion again.) What I heard was that some slaves looked for that opportunity, because a lighter skinned child, and their parent, was treated better by the slave "owner." This, as I understood it, created a divide between those in the field and those that were treated better as "house slaves." This, if I'm thinking through it, likely created a class issue within the race. I could guess that the house class felt they were better than the field class. And, potentially, stepped on the field class at every chance, to maintain their status? Being an outsider I am humbled to admit that my assessment and understandingis wrong. What are your thoughts?

What I think after listening to this man was he was something so special and people could see this in him and want to contribute to his journey and it becomes so meaningful to keep people who have that light in them going. I think it is so important to seeing that in all people and be open to being part of keeping that light going as the most precious thing in this world. This interview with this amazing man touched me. What an incredible man and what an incredible story. I saw a comment that a movie should be made about this man. I agree 1000%!

It is so refreshing to hear a thoughtful movie star that is so measured in what he says. These days watching interviews is frustrating because of all the “likes” and “you knows” being interjected as every other word.

1. dude is an unbelievably good actor, but never gets mentioned. 2. hearing some of the things he has seen and experienced... wow. Makes me realize how far we have come in America, and how far we have left to go. These are the stories that ALL Americans need to hear, especially white Americans, so that we can start to truly heal and move this damn country forward.

The very first movie I saw this guy in I looked up his name and knew him from then on. He played his roles so realistically that for me he always got some of the shine that was all meant for whoever the star of that particular movie was. He was always, to me , literally scary good. Mr. Duke mastered his roles. He appears to be such a humble and grateful guy. If I know he's in a movie , I make it my business to watch it cause I know he's going to help it shine for sure...

Bill Duke does it get any more honest, heartfelt, and extremely relevant in modern American society than his life story ? Everyone can take something from this interview a must watch for any and all ! This is my first time watching a Vlad interview & as inspired, and moved as I was with Mr. Duke, I was just as equally unimpressed by Vlad first impression and all but he seemed a bit douchey to me but what do I know. Thank you Mr. Duke for sharing your story God Bless You and Yours sir !
