Philanthropist, tech leader and billionaire Bill Gates talks with MSNBC’s Ari Melber in this wide-ranging interview about the Gates Foundation's new 2023 "Goalkeepers Report," including efforts to cut maternal mortality and deploy low-cost health technology; global poverty and climate change relief programs; Gates' recent high-level A.I. meeting with Sen. Schumer; the structure, promise and risks of “world-changing” artificial intelligence, and its impact on a range of jobs - including lawyers - plus Gates' call for higher, progressive taxation amidst rising inequality. Melber also reads an extensive text "created" by ChatGPT about Gates, for his response and assessment. This is the extended video of Gates' interview, which aired on MSNBC, and is Gates' third interview with Melber. (Gates previously appeared in the inaugural interview for Melber's "Summit Series" in 2021, where he discussed tech regulation, attacks on him and Dr. Fauci, systemic racism, tax policy and his reaction to being cited in so many rap songs.)

Other countries don't have these tech interventions and yet do better. The answer doesn't lie solely in better tech but in also understanding where we fail conventionally. Gates mentioning "scarce resources" points to one area. The medical system here is a broken mess.
@billplaney2585

The medical system is a broken mess thanks to our politics being so. He has no interest in politics (i.e., in being a politician); his only way to attempt to improve the politics is through our likewise broken system of campaign finance and lobbying. The only way I think we can break the grip the pharmaceutical and medical insurance powerhouses have on us is in communal action that (unfortunately) Americans are too individualistic to achieve - simply STOP USING INSURANCE. Find cash-only doctors and medical practitioners local to your home and use them. Leave the system and let it wither. But most Americans cannot handle giving something up for a greater good (like we used to do).

16:33 "I certainly do my best to encourage people to be philanthropic and make that a journey where they take all the skill that let them accumulate wealth and give it back to society" - exactly the right approach. It's easy to donate money (and certainly when you know you weren't taxed enough), but when you donate your time and your skills, it will not only (hopefully) change the world but it'll change yourself. And that's how you may actually end up with a better society.

Watching his face as Ari read from the AI script was priceless. His little furtive glances at the camera made me wonder what he was thinking. Bill Gates is really still that shy and self-conscious nerd - but with way more polish and self-control. I guess I've come around to kinda rooting for the guy.

Bill Gates has been unjustly criticized for a lot of things, but I give him credit for his contribution to world issues. Most other billionaires choose to horde their money, but he has made strides in many areas to help the less fortunate. Good to see him on the show.

One of the problems with using AI for things like education (and other knowledge based things) is that it relies on what the training dataset is, and it 'fills in the gaps' without applying any critical thinking, it's just placing what would follow next. So, if a place like, say Texas, implements an AI based education system it can dictate that it must be trained on a Creationist database, and the AI will then teach based on that, never being able to ask if what it is teaching actually makes any sense as it can't do critical thinking. Who decides what datasets AI is trained on, and who does the hard work to verify that the AI is not making stuff up to fill in the gaps? This is already an enormous problem with people thinking they can use AI to answer questions... often they get completely wrong, but convincing sounding, results. As it stands, using AI to teach humans is a prefect way to spread a lack of critical thinking, an increase misinformation, and an in conspiracy theories and such due to this misinformation. AI is certainly useful, but the *way* in which it is used and trained is absolutely critical, and humans have a very bad track record when it comes to that sort of thing.

AI currently can not hold a candle to human creative writing; it's all boilerplate -- what we might call 'a hack'. I think creative writers using AI as a foundational tool helps to shortcut a start, but anyone who relies on an AI for creative work will have half-baked results. The human mind is needed to sort and develop what AI initially builds.

The future of technology will be: Disruptive. Good bad or indifferent, it will be disruptive. Jobs will change. Jobs will go away and some will be created. Overall there will be fewer jobs and they will pay less, unless we legislate and unionize. An intensly progressive tax rate aimed at the largest wealth holders MAY manage to reduce the spiraling of wealth into fewer and fewer hands every year, but be very surprised if it happens.
@northernhills863

Arguably, the least impacted occupations will be executives, construction, and general labor/services where robotics development are impractical. In reality, human service will become more appreciated (more of a luxury purchase). The jobs that will suffer are the same sort that suffer now from 'outsourcing'. The truth about AI is that it is a tool, and we should learn how to use it -- while understanding it's limits.
