Worked for Paul at his Estate on Mercer Island in the 90s. His Mother Faye was a rock for him. When she passed, I'm sure that had a difficult effect on him. He never married - it seemed the women around him were more predator than prospective spouse - that was sad because finding his 'Melinda' would have been special. I should note for the record that when Mary Gates ( Bill's Mother ) passed away, Paul was one of the first people Bill came to visit. I missed talking to him in the spring of 2018 at the Original Pancake House in Portland - I should have stopped him but he looked in pain. He died a few months later - so, I should have - I owed him a 'thank you.' I imagine Jody ( his sister ) runs the whole enterprise at the moment - and I hope she proves worthy. No matter what people think, I saw him with his mother and he was a very good son and a good person. RIP.

Everyone saying PAUL is lonely and looks miserable clearly never read that book, he was a very happy man despite the vicissitudes of business. Read the book and you’ll get to understand his love for Rock,Jimmy Hendrix,Scuba Diving,Reading,Space Travel(though he never went up but put money behind) the Brain Institute And his ultimate desire to advance humanity. This guy lived his life to the fullest, loved life, his family,Sister Jody, mom and his dad. RIP PAUL and THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR HUMANITY. yiffy addict true, but nobody forced them anyway. They had more privileges than most, true. But they still had the talent, drive and will, too. Probably, had any of these ingredients weren't there, maybe they hadn't made it and there would be no Microsoft today. Bill Gates was one of the hardest workers in their time, no matter he was well off. Actually Paul Allen couldn't keep up with his pace, and along an illness he decided to step out of Microsoft. I bet many if not most 'rich kids with all privileges' grow up spoiled and never do any relevant in their lives.

joetube01 With their intellect and gates ambition, they would have been successful if they were both born in a trailer park, but not billionaires. gates would be running an IT department for some university or mid level defense contractor making 200K a year, and the same for paul, except he would have died of cancer 20 years ago. But with the advantages the did have growing up, they could have been lazy slackers and still have a better life than most of us enjoy. being born upper middle class or richer gives you a huge advantage, it also gives you the freedom to take risks, Microsoft was barely making it for years before the IBM deal but they were able to push through because they had the safety net of their families to fall back on if they failed. if they were born poor, they might have thrown in the towel long before 1981.

It's not unusual for business partners, marriage partners, musical partners to have heated/serious disagreements. Sometimes such differences break apart partnerships, sometimes they reconcile, and sometimes they grow, settle their differences, and grow again. It's a natural process. This process was well illustrated in the play "Patterns" by Rod Serling way back in the fifties.

Was disappointed, two partners disagreeing yadda yadda...big news regarding the brain institute and collaborative science and his vision to enable global research projects to understand autism, Alzheimer’s, BIG NEWs and leadership from this brilliant man and she wants to gossip. He was so gracious and she missed an opportunity that few receive.

Being a billionaire seems like kind of a pain in the ass. You have to worry about your money, and ultimately you only live as long as you live, you sleep in one bed at a time, roll around on 4 wheels, fly the same speed as anyone else...and the poor guy doesn't have a wife. I'd like a hanger full of planes but really, what are you supposed to do with that. I get the feeling that some of these rich guys end up spoiled and kind of out of touch with regular humanity.

It;s a compelling story he tells, business often changes relationships and success often changes people - it i often hard on friendships and lots of things happen. Overall I'd say both men were blessed and lucky that all the hard work they did paid off. While many critics have posted their views of what they think here - I'm just amazed at the story he tells. But any story always has other views and that is Bill's I wonder what he has to say. Microsoft tech did create opportunities thanks paul.

I'm not sure this give us any insight into Paul Allen's relative happiness or unhappiness. How do you measure his happiness, based on what he looks like here?! That's as shallow as an assumption that money CAN buy happiness. Having money, even a lot of it, does not automatically make one unhappy. Examples of unhappy or happy rich and poor abound. He may not have gotten everything he wanted, ie a family, but he was able to work at and develop many interesting and useful things, as well as explore diverse and numerous interests.

Its no doubt the Microsoft started the Home PC revolution with windows over the decades. Any business partnership has its ups and downs. Allen has more money then he could spend in a lifetime and probable got out because he had many other idea's and interests other then just Microsoft. Gates was the cut throat businessman who did what he felt he had to do to make it work. A couple of kids created this empire, the story is actually amazing and the creative genius behind it. Apple is yet another innovative company that went through its own growing pains and look at it now. It is a cut throat business, especially now.

The pc revolution wasn’t because of these guys. They made software but the home pc market would have still happened without them
