After residency, I took a year off, collected unemployment, and watched Jerry Springer during the day, eating homemade cooked dinners at night, lived with my then fiancee who was going through the surgical residency. Decades later I still feel residency, especially internship, was one of the most inhumane, unreasonable experiences of my life. However, nothing prepared one to be a doctor - and this training which NPs, PAs, and other "physician extenders" do not have. So, no. Physicians extenders are not physicians, and the US healthcare system doesn't even refer medical doctors as doctors anymore, but rather, they are referred to as "providers." In our neck of the woods, it's not impossible to even schedule an appointment with a doctor anymore. It's with one of the Providers.
