One thing I love about Bill Hader (and there are a lot of things) is that he always gives shoutouts and credit to other comedians and writers. John Mulaney even said that when Stefan was blowing up, when Bill Hader would be asked questions about it in interviews, he’d always bring up that Mulaney wrote it too, and that that name drop was a big part of getting him credibility before his first special.

Way back in the day, I was moving into a new apartment, and it had a roach problem. Landlord contracted in some old exterminator, and as he comes in he notices that I have every Death Wish VHS. To me they were just fun schlock, but this old man was a fan. Not only did this old man have the movies memorized, he had THE BEST Bronson impersonation, and put on a performance while spraying the corners of the baseboards. "Draw!" "Do you believe in Jesus? You're gonna meet 'em." "If we're not pioneers, what've we become?!" Hands down, the best comedy I've ever witnessed in real life. I honestly believe seeing Death Wish when he was younger inspired him to be an exterminator.

That reminds me of someone I worked with years ago. He was a crusty old English dude that didn't get on with anyone, and kept to himself. I don't recall him ever speaking to anyone, he sat in the corner and got on with his work. Then one day I found myself sitting next to him. Out of nowhere, he says 'I've heard other people say you like movies, you were a Godfather tour guide in Sicily or something?'. I replied that yes, this was true, and then we started talking about movies. The usual classics came up, and I mentioned Carlito's Way. He then just busts out a perfect Luis Guzmán, and shouts 'Lalin's doin'' thirty years in Attica man, THIRTY YEARS!'. I burst out laughing, and everyone in the office turned to look at what was going on. They had no idea what was going on, they just knew the old quiet dude was now loud and saying strange stuff. He then does a decent Al Pacino, and just started doing Pacino lines from the movie, and Viggo Mortensen, and just about every character in the movie. You'd have to meet the guy to know how surreal and comical was, it would have been far less funny if he was an extrovert. I sat next to him every day after that, until I left a few months later.

@@johnbull1568 If it were me, I would have gotten fired on the grounds of hysteria. In my experience, the people that try to be funny are the ones you don't have lunch with. The quiet folk that keep to themselves? They're the secret cool kids of the cubicles. That's a great story, thanks for sharing.

To be fair, the harder thing is to just do the impressions.. most ppl do impressions of other ppl doing impressions
@Norvo82
@Norvo82 Ай бұрын
It's the way most impressionists master imitations. It usually takes someone to figure out the 'key' to crack someone, which leads the rest to work from there. Nobody really did an impression of Ed Sullivan until the great Will Jordan came up with 'rillllllybigsjooooow!' In the end, even Sullivan started to sound like that. Bob Hope was hard to do too until Dave Thomas nailed his cadence and rhythm.
@JustWasted3HoursHere
@JustWasted3HoursHere Ай бұрын
@@Norvo82 Most impressionists really just do characterizations of other people, with some of the tell-tale body language etc, but Bill really digs deep. He is the only person I've ever heard that does Alan Alda and he absolutely nails it. Dana Carvey is great, but he, to me, falls into that first category of doing characterizations of people rather than spot-on impressions. No one would listen to his George Bush Senior and think it was the real person. Most of Rich Little's impressions, if we're honest, are not that good, but his claim to fame was that he could do so many. In fact I remember one time when he was on Johnny Carson and did about 100 in a row. Not perfect but impressive nonetheless.

That's why I think old movies even when they are kind of ridiculous still have weight. You take an actor like Walter Matthau. He's this kind of schlubby guy. In real life he was gunner on bombers and his wing’s commanding officer was Jimmy Stewart, another unassuming badass. So all his characters have a richness you don’t get from being a barista. Bronson worked in coal mines and again, flew in bombers. He's not acting tough, he's tough.
