"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Comical. Tesla is worth what is worth for the robotic manufacturing process int he Gigafactories, that was Musk's idea, while in 2016 was the laughing stock of the car industry because nobody believe it was possible (it was at the verge of going out of business). The original Tesla was not even an original design, and nothing of the current valuation of the company has anything to do with that. It is basically a marble of manufacturing and software. There is ZERO chance that any of the guys who started Tesla would have not bankrupt the company. Musk is a absurdly good CEO. Maher talks to the smartest in the world, and there is ZERO brilliant people who do not show admiration for the guy. The guy who first introduced a public healthcare system in Saskatchewan, Canada in the 1960s was Tommy Douglas. Other provinces followed suit after that. So, yes all Canadians should be thankful for his initiative because I imagine things would be different now in Canada in terms of access to public healthcare if Tommy Douglas hadn't set an example for other provinces to follow. As someone who has watched Bill for over a decade now, even as he started to lean more conservative and say things I didn't always agree with at a much higher rate, this truly was the most pathetic and embarrassing interview I've ever seen him conduct. Pretty much everything Kyle says here is exactly how that interview went and right after subjecting myself to it I had hoped that Kyle would cover it and he didn't disappoint here. This was no doubt Bill at his lowest and he seemingly has gotten there primarily due to his hatred of wokeism.

I remember when Maher took a sudden turn into social conservativism. He was scheduled to speak at a commencement exercise for UC Berkeley and they got a petition among the graduating class to keep him from speaking. They did this because among their number were Muslim students that would be forced to sit and listen to him speak. Maher has said many bigoted things about them and their beliefs, spread intolerance about their religion and increased bigotry towards them. So the students didn't want him speaking to them on THEIR big day. A day that they had collectively earned, a day that should be focused on their accomplishments. They wanted a speaker that they would speak to their aspirations, not a two bit comedian with narcissistic personality disorder. He had a meltdown because they "cancelled" him. I think he was one of the first people to use that term, because his speech was cancelled. This was in 2014. I think Maher is one of the most entitled turds that is in the media sphere. I haven't watched him in years because he is still holding on to this grudge towards young people because they don't see him as relevant and they didn't want his smug mug at their graduation. Seriously, think back over the last 10 yrs and you will see that he has completely lost his mind And I get that he lost his series Politically Incorrect because of his mild comments surrounding 9-11. But there is a large difference between getting a show off television because you don't like one joke and students deciding that your brand of humor is bigoted and they don't want you to speak to them on their day. The fact that he thinks his freedom of speech was taken from him because students didn't want him to speak at THEIR graduation is absurd. That would be like me getting mad that my second cousin didn't want me to give the toast at her wedding. Completely ludicrous. And it shows what his character is that he made that a "free speech" issue.

@@karenholmes6565 interesting insight. That makes total sense. The thing is though, there have been situations in my life where I personally got annoyed with somebody who was acting overly “woke” and yet I never changed my entire ideology because of it. You can still be just as left wing as you were before, you don’t have to suddenly shift to the right just because you’re annoyed with “woke cancel culture” or whatever. And sometimes you can even acknowledge that some parts of “woke ideology” are actually really GOOD for society, even if some people go way too far with it

I like Maher but he's way out of control of "fear of woke" stuff (he should fear the GOP and their right wing nonsense and religious idiocy). I thought his worship of Musk was way out of control. Maher has bought into too much right wing nonsense despite being a liberal. He seems more focused on pounding on the liberals instead of dealing with growing fascism of the GOP. Also, Musk insisting we need a much larger population on earth is disgraceful as we have millions of people starving to death, having no access to fresh water and other nations dying in climate change and Musk seems to think more "worker ants" is good for the oligarchs. It's pure drivel.

For instance, engineers don't really do the 1st two, those are the objectives of scientists and mathematicians. Engineers might utilize things like those in their practice when designing whatever they are working on but this is also overly simplistic as it seems pointed that the only engineers are mechanical engineers. Engineers take on many roles; mechanical, electrical, chemical, software, production, civil, etc... Would you disqualify a civil engineer from the title of engineer because they weren't the one to invent the clover intersection for a highway, develop a new form of concrete or sewer duct. or create an algorithm determining the fluid flow of water through a canal system? Elon is largely a production engineer and his capacity at such is shown pretty blatantly in the output of tesla as well as the speed of innovation at SpaceX. The guys nothing close to perfect and calling him "good" is a stretch, but to just simply see him as just a rich guy who buys companies and nothing more is very simplistic, biased, and not reflective of reality at all
