Bill Maher in conversation with Larry Wilmore at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing his book,
"What This Comedian Said Will Shock You." This event was taped on June 4, 2024.
The host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest and most opinionated book ever-a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture.
Bill Maher has hosted Real Time on HBO for the last twenty-one years. Before that Maher created and hosted Politically Incorrect on ABC. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
“Whether you agree or disagree with him-and I do both-Bill Maher had proven himself to be an illuminating force in a world that values heat over light. His is a vital voice, keeping the left honest and calling the right to account for itself before the bar of reason and of decency. I’d say ‘thank God for Bill,’ but he doesn’t believe in God. So I’ll just say thanks.”-Jon Meacham
In What This Comedian Said Will Shock You, Maher has collected and revised a decade of his direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics and what’s happening in the world.
Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health-Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.
Larry Wilmore has been a television producer, actor, comedian, and writer for more than 25 years. He can currently be heard as host of Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air on The Ringer Podcast Network. The show features Wilmore’s unique mix of humor and wit as he weighs in on the issues of the week and interviews guests in the worlds of politics, entertainment, culture, sports, and beyond. Filmo and TV credit include: Jerry and Margo Go Large, alongside Bryan Cranston and Annette Benning on Paramount+; Reasonable Doubt for Hulu’s Onyx Collective; Amend: The Fight for America on Netflix; The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore on Comedy Central; Insecure on HBO; Black-ish on ABC; The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; In Living Color, The Office and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him a 2002 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award.

Larry Wilmore was miscast as a comedian. He is in fact one of the most intelligent, best informed and fastest thinkers we have in public discourse. If he is occasionally funny, all the better. He is so articulate and has an engaging personal style I'm surprised he doesn't have his own talk show yet. I hope he will soon because I know he will be up to interviewing some of the best thinkers of our time and I look forward to the day I can watch him do so.

The Q&A was the best part. Bill had either a home run or a grand slam for every answer. I am a "socialize all the utilities" kind of guy, so pretty far left, but I think he made some great points about Israel-Gaza. People, college or anywhere else, holding signs for Hamas were ridiculous (this is one of those things where the left just gives the right ammunition to attack us with against independents / moderates), because if they meant 'Palestinians' the signs should have made the distinction, and if they really did mean that Hamas was the more righteous organization, then you haven't read enough about how they operate (their internal tactics and strategy), because attacking from a residential neighborhood to invite retaliatory attacks makes the non-members of Hamas, the people just chilling in a neighborhood, bitter about being dead / injured and losing families to the IDF, and that helps grow the ranks of Hamas. Is Israel seizing land? Yes. Are they committing war crimes? Yes. It's tough all around.

As it applies to self-checkout, I don't know who the "genius" was who came up with that one, but how could they not know that theft would increase? Yeah, but everyone appreciates ATMs, don't they? Why do people get upset about self-checkout when they don't get upset about not going to a bank teller to get some cash but going to an ATM instead? Is it the extra work they personally have to do to self checkout their groceries? Or are they upset because a machine is replacing a human worker? But ATMs replaced thousands of human workers. If people are upset about machines replacing human workers, I get that. But then just expect to pay more for humans checking out your groceries--that's fine.

I'm no Maher groupie or whatever - but he makes some good points. Some of his positions I completely disagree with. But that's OK. That's how it used to be back when I was growing up.

How does democracy work if most government actions are kept secret? How does democracy work if the people are raised by government agents in government schools? How does democracy work if spending bills are single-topic and include the full tax rates that will be applied to all to pay for it? How does democracy work when the government sets the price of money, buys government debt, and never even attempts at fair taxation to pay for what they are buying?

That's not always true. But either way: So what? Why should one pushback at Bill? He has no authority over anyone else, nor anyone's quality of life, nor does he/his pov affect the state of the Union WHATSOEVER. And if ya don't like Bill/his pov, you are free to simply swipe on & pay absolutely no attention to what he has to say. He's just another guy spewing his pov like millions of others on s.m. No need to take him seriously enough to use up limited mins arguing with him. Viewers are going to agree/disagree with Bill, regardless. And if the viewer questions the validity of Bill's, or any guest's claims, they can do their own research. Again: Bill's words are not consequential enough to bother pulling him out on the carpet...right? Atleast I HOPE you don't think so.

The comic book thing is so stupid. Bill probably hasn't looked at a comic since he was a child. Since then we've had guys like Art Spiegelman, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and so many others. Watchmen was named by Time as one of the 100 Greatest Novels. Even with superhero comics they're basically the equivalent of old mythologies... you know, the things that guys like Homer and Virgil wrote about. He mentions Toni Morrison... I've read Beloved and The Bluest Eye, and I'd take Neil Gaiman's Sandman over both. For the whole "when I was a child" quote, CS Lewis had the best response: “Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

On the gun topic: Bill, your point about liberals protesting gun ownership liberals while not knowing anything about firearms - and then citing the AK-47 as an example. I dont follow your reasoning here. Why do we need to know that an AK-47 can fire 600 rounds/min at 380 years in order to realize that no civilians should have the right to own them? For 20 years we've seen what assault rifles can do. IMO, yeah: they should be taken away from our citizenry. Not that that's going to happen. But in any case, it is disproportionate to your other example of a woman of average income walking alone in areas where cops don't arrive in time. A 22 for self-defense - license-approved, with psychological background checks - is totally acceptable, and I think most of us have always supported this. And while, yes, we have to be nuanced about the solutions needed - way beyond just gun control measures - I have to glibly ask you how "nuanced" you think you'd be if you were caught in one of those public mass shootings to witness your friends and dozens of people around you murdered in front of your eyes, assuming you were lucky enough not to get nailed yourself. We all get too fucking dispassionate and out-of-touch with issues that we don't directly experience ourselves. I myself have tried to imagine being a parent, losing my kids in one of those damn shootings. And I imagine the grief to be unbearable. I don't know if I'd be as nuanced about it as I am right now after something like that.

You are proving Bill's point. He said AR-15 not AK-47. These are totally different guns. AK-47 is a gun that can be automatic and was banned from manufacturing 40's years ago. AR-15 is semi automatic. Because you don't know the difference, you are advocating for banning guns that are already banned. That's why he said liberals don't know anything about guns because you don't.
