You know, I remember a *long* time ago, I saw Bill Maher on TV as a kid. I didn't know who he was, but when my dad came in and saw him, his teeth clenched a bit and he said, "Oh, this guy--I could strangle him with my bare hands and not feel a shred of guilt. No matter how you grow up, Johnny, just make sure you don't end up like him." Now I know exactly why.

I don't care that Bill Maher thinks comics are dumb. However, I certainly care that he disrespected the name of Stan Lee mere days after his passing, while simultaneously shitting on his legacy and all those who needed his characters to get through hard times in their lives. When I was a kid, I needed Spider-Man, and even though its been years since I picked up a comic book, I will never forget what that character and his world meant to me.

I am not a comic book fan and I can tell you why Stan Lee and comics are important. Marvel told kids it was okay to be weird, that you didn't have to be perfect to be a hero. Marvel told readers that racism, antisemitism, and violence were all bad things that need to be fought head on but that in the end everything will be okay. This during a time when all three of those things were a perfectly acceptable part of society.

Generations from now, our modern superheroes will be remembered as the mythology of the 20th century, the same way we today remember stories of King Arthur, Beowulf, Hercules, Odysseus, and Achilles. Even if the name Stan Lee is lost to time, his creations won’t be, thus he will be remembered through them. What will Bill Maher be remembered for in the ages to come? Saying mean things about President Cheeto and being an all around dick? Not likely.

Look at Battlestar Galactica (the reboot series), which was considered the best sci-fi series ever, won plenty of prizes, had A-list actors, had super-devoted fans, and is now almost completely gone from the public memory. "I believe there is a hero in all of us; that gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride." That quote, from a comic book movie, encapsulates why people love these characters: they remind us we are and can do better. They are heroes to those who may have no other. For Bill Maher, there's this quote: "It's better to be silent and thought a fool to speak and remove all doubt." At least about this.

As a long time fan of Bill Maher's comedic commentary on our political landscape, I have to say that his comments concerning comic books, his views on the people who produce them, and his demeaning description about the people who love them, is downright ignorant! These are comments that are unbecoming of a man who is normally a quite astute observer of the world. Maher's comments, concerning comic books, is akin to me saying that all music is for babies, because nursery rhymes are music, and only babies listen to nursery rhymes. Therefore, people should not listen to music when they become adults. Such an asinine monolithic view of music is precisely the same thing Maher does with comic culture. To denigrate comic book producers and audiences as juvenile only reveals Maher's lack of nuance with regards to this category of art. Yes, there are some comic books that indulge in childish ideas. However, a lot of comic books - especially in their graphic novel format - are filled with with complex character arcs, engaging plot lines, trenchant social commentary, and breathtaking artwork. . There is, after all, a reason that many in academia now write entire books analyzing the social and philosophical significance of comic books and comic book characters. It can even be argued that it takes a wider variety of talent to produce a comic book/graphic novel than it does to produce a conventional novel. After all, in a conventional novel, the only talent on display is ones ability to write engaging prose. In a comic book/graphic novel you have to write engaging prose, but also accompany that with aesthetically pleasing illustrations. Hence, a comic book embodies two talents, while a conventional novel only demonstrates one talent.

Comic books are this generation's form of literature, but some people don't seem to see that, because it's buried in panels and some immaculate artworks. Nevertheless, they're no different than other mediums of entertainment and storytelling. We can all agree that Bill Maher is just a pretentious man in his 60s, only smoking pot and do nothing but tell class-F jokes, and his opinions don't matter.

I agree with most of what you guys have said here, but please don't refer to Bill Maher as "bad for liberals," because quite honestly, he isn't a liberal. He may purport to be one, but if you understand political ideology he's more in line with a far left independent or libertarian based on his views on issues. He's what I'd like to call a "fake progressive." What I mean by this is he likes to identify himself as liberal or left leaning for attention and viewership, but if you actually listen to what he says, he really isn't one. He unfairly attacks and or criticizes the left or the Democrats to get a kick out of his center or right leaning audience when he wants the viewership, and also conveniently attacks the right for the same thing in inopportune moments to unfairly paint all of the right as mindless Trump supporters (which most right wingers don't agree with Trump on issues, the Republicans are the Trump party right now, they're not real Conservatives.) At the same time, he always gives the extreme right or alt right a pass on their bullshit, but also unfairly attacks the left for things that aren't even their fault. My point, he's a provocateur, opportunist, attention-grabbing, shock value instigating asshole, and he is in no way a liberal. Please don't lump liberals in with Bill Maher, because he isn't one. He doesn't deserve to be associated with tolerant, open-minded, non-objective instigating progressives.

Actually, I think that's why he went gunning for comics while pissing on Stan's grave. Remember that Maher is one of those insufferable atheists who sees no value in any religion. But since nature truly DOES abhor a vacuum, here comes comics to fill in the gap left by having religion's stories pushed aside, using the archetypes that made the latter possible. So what value is it to Maher to get rid of that old-time religion if a secular alternative takes its place to give people the space to dream?

Wrong. I read a LOT of comics and reading is NEVER bad. I am sorry, Bill, but the concepts and the stories crafted by intelligent writers and gifted artists is never a bad thing. There are concepts in mythology, culture, science, and society that are introduced in comics that otherwise I might not have been exposed to while growing ups My son is getting over his learning disability by reading comics we enjoy together. So, while you say you never read or know Stan Lee, why comment at all? I appreciate you commentary on politics . But I preach not to judge others or allow a politician or anyone tell me who to hate or who to judge. Yet, you judge someone’s work that you never read or had any experience with. You don’t know the subject matter and you used your celebrity to comment on a topic that you have zero experience with. I don’t hate liberals or conservatives and I don’t teach my kid to be petty or judge mental, especially if he doesn’t have first hand experience with the subject matter. I found you observation on comics to be irresponsible and out of character for someone who is usually measured on what he has to say

Stan Lee's characters didn't cure my depression but they inspired me to try harder, do better and never give up, over the years I have gotten a lot better and my love of comics and superheroes in general has never been stronger and more pronounced. Stan Lee and his amazing world didn't save me, it inspired me beyond anything I can say. I'll admit I was kinda shocked (considering the stereotypes you're typically exposed to in the media which I never saw except perhaps once while I was working there) but granted while it was a small sample size these were typically people who were able to 'adult', as it were, while still being able to enjoy comics like they did growing up. I also can't help but feel like the most hardcore Trump supporters would actually SIDE with Maher on this particular line of thought, not be the type of person he's targeting with his rant.

Right there with you guys on this... but in all reality just look at the difference between Bill Maher and Stan Lee. I mean Stan Lee was 95 and even up to his last known video that he released, was cracking jokes, smiling and just generally having a great time. Granted that's the public face that he puts on, but I don't think I've ever seen or heard about any time where he was angry or negative at all (although I'm not saying it never happened). Now when you look at Bill Maher, he can't even laugh at his own jokes... He does his smug little "haha I'm such a funny guy" smirk thing, but that's really it. The rest of the time, he just seems like he's seething under that smug exterior. So, I'll take the positive energy and happiness that Stan put out in the world over a confirmed and certified prick that Bill Maher is any day of the week.... Bill Maher will never get the kind of recognition or praise or love that Stan Lee got when it's his time to go... So Stan wins in my book... and - to wrap up - I know what Stan Lee meant to me over the years from childhood to (YES) adulthood (dun, dun, Duuuuuuun!) and no blowhard can change that by trying to talk shit about him.... and just to illustrate a point, I read comics AND books without pictures in them in equal measure. LOL

Breaks my heart. I am a fan of Bill Maher but, yeah, he can push the limit sometimes. I work at a cinema and love talking to others about movies. I personally don’t enjoy comic book movies (huge Star Wars fan) but, whatever I do, I do NOT criticize that whole genre because it is an evolution of myth and is sacred in its own way. It is apart of the collective imagination that has manifested into what it is today and that really does help people (even if I am personally not excited by the concepts). Everyone has their Luke Skywalker. Some people see their hero in a superhero and that’s cool and encouraged! Yeah, him making these comments in light of Stan Lee’s passing is sad. The only thing I understand deeply is his frustration with misplaced passions and priorities. I have always been in politics since I was in eight grade because I see how much an election can transform society for better or worse.. it was always difficult to see others put so much energy and attention towards things like sports.. Politics is NOT a spectator sport. It is immersive and it does have huge consequences. It’s important to be educated and informed. Be skeptical. Catch yourself before you fall into confirmation biases. Anyways, that’s all I will say for now. Vote in your next election. We need a good candidate for 2020. This whole thing makes me want to watch a comic book movie haha I like the Christopher Nolan Batman and Toby spider man trilogies.

So I guess Maher has never heard of Maus, Robert Crumb, 100 Bullets, Scalped, The Nam and The Fade In. I can understand him thinking superhero comics are childish but the medium itself is like all books in that it has varying degrees of sophistication. The medium has work aimed for adults. The first one I mention Maus is as an important piece of work about The Holocaust as Sophie's Choice and Shoa. The other books mentioned are as high quality of adult entertainment as anything you would get from HBO or FX.

Yo Bill? do you really think something like Conan The Barbarian is a kids level comic book??! hell every adult in their 30's to mid 50's has probably heard of; Elfquest! it has younger fans. but i guarantee you, the bulk of its fanbase the world over is mainly adult. Superheroes and comic books as we know them today do largely skew towards a juvenile sensibility. A grown man can jet through the air when wearing an iron suit? Adults running around streets in tights and shooting powers from their hands? Like, come on now! That's kids stuff and it can't really be denied. And the fact that both the Marvel and DC brands are becoming ever more diluted thanks to the overabundance of comic book-related movies and shows doesn't help matters. It's basically become the fast food of entertainment; it's superficial and unsubstantial. The ppl in this video are basically man-children themselves who spend most of their time oohing and aahing over first glimpse photos of actors in cheap-looking superhero costumes. I hate Bill Maher and I don't like that he attacked Stan Lee but there's an element of truth to what he said.

The way I see it, Bill Maher lacks respect for other human beings. Thousands of people cried when we saw a CGI tree sacrifice his life for his friends, and a secret agent giving her life to get a mystical stone on a fictional planet. That he don't like that concept is perfectly OK, but to shit on people who like it and to say there is something wrong with them is just stupid. In Captain America: Civil War, Sharon says this: "Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say 'No, you move'." They may not be complete dicks about it, but they and *a good* amount of people probably never understood what Stan Lee was going for with these characters. These are the types of people who see vibrant colors and word balloons and tune out because they cant be objective enough to see past that stuff. Maher is a prick, but Im glad he said what he said. It highlights the huge prejudice that various people still have toward comic books. Animation (in America at least) is treated in the same exact way. People see Disney and tune out. People see animation that *isnt* Disney and tune out. Parents bring their infants to an animated movie. Etc. And ironically the creators of these 'kids' entertainment often know far more about tolerance than the sad folks who just dismiss it with a glance.

There has always been a stigma when it comes to regularly reading and being a fan of comic books. That stigma has lessened over the last 10-15 years with the advent of successful comic book movie franchises, but it is still there. I was just having a similar conversation with someone I work with last week about why there is such a large disparity in cultural acceptance between people who regularly watch and follow sports, and the people who do the same with comics. It’s always struck me as odd, that if someone wanted to have an in depth conversation about the Red Sox’s home run percentage per game during the last World Series, they would readily find it, but if someone wanted to talk about the ramifications of Dick Grayson getting shot in the head a few weeks ago, they get looked at like they’re a leper. Granted, the internet has opened up the ability to find like minded people and converse with them, but as a cultural standard, you’d be way more likely to run into someone at the grocery store who would want to talk about sports than about an assassination attempt on Nightwing. How does being devoted to one thing make you better than someone who is just as devoted to something else? That’s my question.

Before I comment on this particular topic, here's a little bit of what informed my opinion: I loved to read comic books as a kid. I still own my 500+ collection of comic books. I still read comics/graphic novels from time to time. I went to college and majored in English literature, so I have also read quite an abundance of what Maher would call, "big boy books." I have probably read more "big boy books," than Bill Maher. At one point in my life, I probably did "graduate from comic books to big boy books," but I did it, not because I thought of it as "growing up." No, I went full on reading novels, because I wanted to become a novelist. So, I was purely thinking about my own personal desires/goals. Even though I made the conscious choice that I made, I completely disagree with Bill Maher. I think that people should be able to enjoy both comic books or graphic novels, along with novels or nonfiction books. But with that being said, I do agree with Maher, if the point he is trying to make is that not enough people read actual books. This is true. I interact and meet with new people all the time and I can tell when I am speaking to someone who reads or someone who does not read. And there are way too many people out there that do not read...anything at all. And I absolutely feel that if more people read comic books, than nothing at all, we would be better off. But I do want more people to go and read actual books. We need to keep challenging our minds and if we do not, like any other muscle, it will deteriorate. So, I think the greater truth would be: because so many people do not read anything at all, that is why the current president got elected. It is true that we are not a smart group of people (Americans). Just look at our average test scores, compared to other developed countries. What are we, ranked like 24? In the world, in literacy and in math, I mean. That is woefully insufficient. No wonder we have problems electing the most experienced person to run our country. But I digress. We absolutely need comic books. We should not compare Stan Lee to trees or air. Yes, comic books are not essential to life. But without stories, without art, what is the value of that life? William Shakespeare wrote in, "King Lear," “O, reason not the need! Our basest beggars are in the poorest thing superfluous. Allow not nature more than nature needs, man’s life’s as cheap as beast’s.” My point (and Shakespeare's) is that, what are we? Are we beasts, that all we care about, all we need are the basic necessities to keep us alive? Is just having food, air, water, and shelter enough for us, as human beings? No! We need art! We need books! We need comics! And we need people like Stan Lee to create them for us! I am a writer of novels, short stories, screenplays, and poetry. I'm sure I have written and read more than Bill Maher, by the age of 21 than he has his entire life. Yet, if Marvel wanted to offer me a job writing comic books, I'd take that in a heart-beat.

And I'd also like to iterate that, it's absolutely not the fault of comic book readers, why the current president is sitting in the Oval Office. I would dare say that most comic book readers probably voted for Hillary Clinton, didn't vote at all, or voted for a 3rd party candidate. Comic book readers are too smart, too compassionate, have a deep rooted moral fiber and convictions to ever vote for such a "pussy grabber." No. A comic book reader would never vote for that man. It would be like voting for the Kingpin or Lex Luthor. No. We don't want people like Lex Luthor running the country. We learned that very, very early on.

Opinions are like assholes everyone got one? thats not the point, the point is regardless of rights you need to draw the line somewhere's and show some class. Bill Maher's an idiot and a disgusting person for what he said, having an opinion doesn't justify his comments or the right to say it at all. You need to have facts in life not bullshit disrespectful opinions and quit the whole 'child-like' want to always throw that 'my right to an opinion' B.S. in somebody else's face. Because there are places in the world where a wrongly put across 'opinion' will see you friggin getting killed outright o.k.!

If he had come out and said "I personally dont like comicbooks" then thats fine, but when he came out and said "I personally dont like comicbooks, and if you do then youre stupid" then that is not fine. For those who don't understand Bill Maher, he doesn't respect any fictional works as important art. He only respects non fiction, facts and history that we can learn from. This may have come from hating religion and writing those off as fictional stories which do nothing for humanity. He essentially has the same take on superhero movies as Martin Scorsese.

X-Men came out in 2000. Next year there are more movies based on Stan's comic book's hitting theater's. For 19 years Stan's characters have employed thousands of people & grossed billions of dollars. What's Mayer's claim to fame? A little pissy political talk show about nothing on HBO. Somewhere soon you'll be in public Bill. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes for nothing. I'm confused on the subject in that Maher was positive in past tense? I'm a conservative and every time I cross paths with a liberal. Wither it be online or in person, they always come off as negative people. I've heard that liberals claim to be tolerant and stand up for others. But then when Maher says something offensive liberals always make excuses for him. But if a conservative did the same, liberals would want the person fired.
