@@homelessrobot The "honor system" part means that not everything is written down. Which it isn't. He means that some things aren't clearly spelled out or written down in the constitution. The competence of the voters to understand local people and local matters, and for the people they deem to be competent by popular vote to bring these concerns to higher levels of government, without requiring every single voter to understand every single part of the large machine that is our government. This thing was established when there was no internet, so information about presidential candidates arrived to the voter as hearsay. You cannot really make an informed decision that way. I was sort of shocked about his statement too, everyone can have their own opinion, but he as a person of public interest, influencing thousand and thousand of people opinions, should maybe think twice about spreading his personal beliefs in public like the coronavirus itself, when they are probably going to undermine public health measurements on which REAL-Scientists have agreed on to be helpful in reducing the spread of the virus and slowing the rate of infections down. And talking about his Vitamin B/D, fish oil, sharkfin powder, or whatever kind of self-healing nonsense he is into, is not really helping either, especially in a global health crisis caused by a Pandemic, which at this point in time was totally out of control and without a end in sight, irresponsible.

@Marc Rittner Who is the minority? Residents of sparsely populated states? Land shouldn't matter. Every vote should be equal.
@Ericwvb24 жыл бұрын
@Marc Rittner It's not working because only swing states get any attention. The Electoral College was originally set up to give the slave states more power so they would agree to join the union. Slaves could not vote, so a direct election would mean the North would have far more political power than the South. With the "3/5 compromise" and the electoral college, slave states would get additional political representation and still prevent their slaves from being able to vote.
@frankthetank41014 жыл бұрын
@Marc Rittner I feel like the Electoral College now only gives the advantage to the states mostly populated by people who want to make America white again. It clearly doesn't give the majority of the country an advantage. Look at George Bush and Al Gore. Trump and Hillary they clearly lost but thanks to the Electoral College they won
@daemn424 жыл бұрын
Disclaimer: This is an explanation, not an endorsement for or against. We have never been a true democracy in that all the eligible electorate can vote on an issue at the national level. We've always been a representative government (electing only the representatives to govern for us), but the founders recognized that we needed a mix of state based and population based representatives, which is why every state gets 2 Senators to represent the state's interests as a whole, and House gets a number of representatives in proportion to their states's population. The electoral college is meant to meld these two together which is why there are the same number of electors as there are total state representatives, and electors must be chosen from the public and cannot themselves be office holders to attempt to avoid corruption and established party-line voting. The most obvious problem with the modern version of the electoral college is that because most states have fallen reliably into firmly red or blue category, the presidential elections fight over about 10 so called swing states and ignore all the rest. The problem with abolishing the electoral college and letting only the national popular vote determine the presidential ticket is that more than half of our total population resides in about 10 states (CA, TX, FL, NY, PA, IL, OH, GA, NC, MI), so most presidential campaign promises would target those states, ignoring all the rest. If you live in Maine or Wyoming or Alaska you might as well not exist. Now to add some context to what the founders were thinking when they created this system. 1. They really didn't trust "the masses" as a whole to make informed decisions. 2. National scale elections that gathered votes from all eligible voters in a short period of time was simply not viable at that time, and some would argue perhaps not even now. Early on some of the states even missed the deadline for getting their electors votes in. The constitution *only* specifies that the states choose a set of electors from the public, and how many there are. It doesn't tell the states how to choose them. Many states initially had their own state legislatures choose the electors, and only over time did they move to allowing them to be chosen by popular vote of the people. 3. They originally envisioned that the electors would all be free agents chosen by the people and then could vote for president and vice president responsibly. The creation of the limited party system as we know it, caused this to break down, and eventually the states all bound the electors choice to the popular vote. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this binding rule challenged in the courts following the 2020 election. Imagine if the new majority minority population flips the state popular vote from red to blue in a traditionally red state (say TX or AZ), and then some electors choose to not vote for the blue candidate. It's 2020, so why not. 4. Slavery both in the north and south and the 3/5ths compromise.. It's complicated and despicable of course, but the short of it is that southern states gained about 1/3rd more representative power in congress relative to the northern states and the same proportion more electors by counting their slaves as 3/5ths of a person, without actually allowing them to vote. This compromise baked into the wording of the Constitution (Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3) by the founders, makes them *all* responsible.

@ Stephen Short.....If you look at the amount of Covid cases in places like Canada, France, Germany, Vietnam, ect. you’ll notice that they have way lower numbers, even when looking at proportions that account for population size, those nations are doing waaay better. Because they locked down their economy for 4-8 weeks to give themselves time to come up with a plan of attack, and because they take social distancing and mask wearing more seriously than Americans do. They also don’t gather in large groups and know that it’s airborne. We’re only just now starting to get it, many people are still in denial about the pandemic, and a vaccine won’t save us. We’re all going to get it at some point between now and the next 5 years! 😉

@Pickles Nope. He is actually right. I am from Poland, my mother is a microbiologist, academic professor, she worked in a laboratory with various viruses, and also taught students. She has the experience and says the same as Maher - Maher says to wear masks, keep social distance, but on the other hand, you cannot hide in your house forever, you have to find balance. Panic and exaggeration is not a solution either. As Bill Maher says, for humans to defeat the virus, our bodies must be stronger internally, it is a matter of exercising the body's immunity. Yes, you have to take basic precautions, but you can't hide at home forever, not work (most people can't afford it), be hysterical 24/7, lock yourself in a sterile glass bubble. It is because of this over-isolation that the Americans' immune system is weaker and the virus attacks and kills You more easily. Yes, there is also a bigger wave in Poland now, but it is mainly miners who suffer from covid because they have damaged and weaker lungs, generally people in Poland, even if they get sick, go through covid much easier than people in the West, we know, because we are already conducting research and observations. This is generally the case in Europe. Why? Because in Europe we are not so delicate, we exercise, we go outside, we do our basic duties. Neither Maher nor anyone is telling you to ignore or take covid lightly, but you also can't lock yourself in the house forever.

The problem with this whole discussion is that there are underlying moral questions that are not being addressed. For example, should everyone survive? Is every human life worthwhile? @M T Bill was making a great point, and Nat hit on it to a degree. It has been shameful how the western medicine forces have not said what WE can do against the virus. At first it was basically hide in your basement, do not go out. Western medicine failed us big time in not saying what we can personally do, and what we should have been doing during the first big lockdown, since many of us had more time. Improving our diets with more fruits and vegitables, vitamin C, more water, yoga/meditation, reducing sugar in our diets, and most importantly, exercise.
