It starts by teaching the TRUE history of the U.S. to our future generations and not by some pro -anglo motivated writers. It starts by teaching the TRUE history of the Christian religion and not by some biased religious writers.
@matthewkopp23912 жыл бұрын
I agree that religious and civic history can be better taught. But doing so should not result in the stupid iconoclasm we see today. There are thousands of interpretations of Christianity both today and historically. That is one of the best aspects of Christianity, it is how we gained Freedom of and freedom from religion. It was expressed by John Locke who worked with the Huguenots, and then adopted by Thomas Jefferson. Out of the tragedy of the Huguenots arose many of our most basic civil liberties. But today because Jefferson own slaves, his statue is torn down, the iconoclasts seem not to understand that he was historically one of the greatest defender of freedom from and freedom to practice religion and tolerance as well as a secular liberal legal tradition. I grew up in the United Church of Christ which is one of the more progressive denominations. Bill Moyers is a member. The Church was a leader in the interfaith movement which I always thought was a very positive movement. Perhaps the shadow side of that tolerance was that of not confronting other churches as some became more and more profane. And they called the UCC profane and heretical for being tolerant and accepting. What I have found is that many of the more radical church‘s don’t read the Bible or understand church history at all, or the many interpretations. Yes, there are dark chapters of Christian history. But some of the deeper lessons come out of erased triumphs such as Rev. Robert Rauschenbush who ended child labor, Rev. Paul Tillich and other Germans who stood up against the Nazi, Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights movement, not to mention things like the abolitionists. In 1900 most mainline churches were progressive and accepted science. Literalist fundamentalism was a reactionary movement of the 1920‘s expressed then most notably in the Scopes Monkey Trial. They darker chapters should be taught for the sake of greater discernment. But there is also an appreciation which is also sorely lacking by the general population as well.
@wizquinn80212 жыл бұрын
@@matthewkopp2391 Very well spoken and I agree with you. Unfortunately, with so many interpretations along the the many different bible versions, commentaries, study bibles, etc , it leaves room for misinterpretation. We are totally traumatized. We never thought this would happen in our country. We fell asleep, and wolves came into conservative churches in sheepskin. We never saw them coming or took them seriously. Obviously this present darkness has it's roots from Charlottesville when Trump said, "there are good people on both sides." That was the start of these group's becoming mainline. Trump invited them to become his army. That's what they thought he called them to Washington, DC for, "fight like hell." They were shocked when they found they'd be no pardons for them. There is hope because we'll be ready next time.

When I hear all of this as a European, I'm sure grateful that I don't belong to the Anglos-Saxon world, that we have evolved passed the majority vote (we once had it in the past) and that we have evolved passed the two party system (we once had it in the past), which is so characteristic for the Anglo-Saxon world (that doesn't want to adjust its societies as better ideas emerge). It's way more difficult to create such a schism in European politics (because we have more parties, so the blame can't be directed against one party and aiming it against every party makes you sound a bit ridiculous), we work with coalition governments (so no Trump can do what he wants to, he's held in check by his coalition party(ies)) and we don't have such a useless politicization of of everything (a.o. our juridical system, our school-boards, our Covid vaccinations, ...). The divisions in our societies are never so outspoken as in the Anglo-Saxon world.
@deadman7462 жыл бұрын
When you speak of evolving past the majority vote, are you referring to the Parliamentary system? Duverger pointed out three-quarters of a century ago that a first-past-the-post system, which the U.S. has, will overwhelmingly tend to create a two-party system. (India may be an exception, as there is a plethora of parties, but it is parliamentary.) Nietzsche pointed out that even a five-party system had the problem of Procrusteanism, that then therefore five opinions will be socially acceptable, but anything that deviates from those five will be unacceptable. Even given that, two parties are especially problematic, especially because game theory shows that they will tend to be as close as possible to get votes. Still, I'd like to know if there is anything I missed. How exactly do you think your system has evolved past the majority vote?
@dirkgonthier1012 жыл бұрын
@@deadman746 Well, I don't see things as complicated as you. But the Anglo-Saxon model of majority vote (which means that if a party wins in a certain area (constituency or state) that that party automatically gets all the electoral votes of that area: you can loose with 49% vs 51% then those 49% are votes which don't make a difference in determining the electoral votes of that area) was the first way of democracy. So, the whole world copied it. But, as time went by, the proportional system was invented (where those 49% gave you the right of having 49% of the electoral votes of that area and the 51% gave you the right to 51% of the electoral votes) and the continent Europe changed their constitutions to allow this new idea to take place. So, Europe was once ruled by the same majority vote as the Anglo-Saxon world, but as soon as there was invented the proportional system, we changed to the proportional system. And, given the difficulties USA-democracy (and English democracy) experiences with a fascist leader like Trump, the benefits of the proportional system (with multiple parties and coalition governments) are becomming more and more clear. I hope you can understand my explanation a bit, 'cause talking about subjects as these is a lot harder than having a normal conversation in English...

“The Anglo-Saxon world” you reference is global, therefore, you are under its hegemony. The sun still doesn’t set on The British Empire. I know this will be a shock for you, but there are way, way more people that doesn't talk English as that talk English. What I miss is how 'exceptional' the Anglo-Saxon culture is. It is the constitution that gives Republican states the right to create non-proportionate voting power. It is the constitution that gives Republican legislatures the right to overrule their voters in a Presidential election. To save American democracy, first solve the extreme financial inequality and stop calling people's wealth their 'worth'. When there is extreme inequality (real or perceived), people either scapegoat a community or the most ruthless group tries to destroy and capture the power structures.
