I can't believe no one has commented on these videos. Bill Muncey and unlimited hydroplane racing were woven into the fabric of my childhood. Muncey wasn't everyone's favorite because, for some reason, a lot of people don't like an athlete deemed "the greatest of all time", which he was. Thanks for the retrospective!

He was my favorite, and a spokesman for the sport.. he was perfect for the role because of his strong and friendly personality

He was the best. I remember the controversy for the Gold Cup in Seattle. I’m from Seattle and I always watched because of Bill. He died doing what he loved. How many people can say that.

After all my years in Seattle and the Trip Cities, I remember so vividly these horrid accidents. In about 1975 the Miss Notre Dame exploded right in front of us. The driver was killed and the boat went to the bottom of Lake Washington in seconds. So glad that like all motor racing, the safety improvements make serious damage to the drivers a rarity.
