I know this comment is a year old, but I'm gonna give my answer anyway lol. I'm assuming an autograph re-seller sent the kid to get something signed. Maybe Bill would've recognize the re-seller, or the guy just assumed it would be easier for the kid to get it. I wish I could see what he was trying to get signed, because Bill knew it was something the kid didn't understand, and knew something was off when the kid couldn't answer where he got it. The bit about "candies and car people" is Bill expressing his concern that some stranger is trying to get this kid to get an autograph.

Autograph hounds and re-sellers often use children as pawns to get celebrity autographs. Murray saw through the boy's ruse when he said he "didn't know" where he got the poster that he gave Murray to sign. Plus, as the father of six boys, Murray isn't easily fooled, especially when the boy let out a chuckle after Murray said, "Tell me the truth."

Poor Bill. I love the guy because he is a lovable guy and a gift to all of us. But he looks, to me anyway, like a complete burnout. He needs Jesus! Only the Lord can fill all the empty spaces. With His love , peace and satisfaction. Bill has most of the outward stuff.
