Thank you for this. I think Bill's generation of Oxbridge performers is the best and I love their history. They are all getting on now so these interviews are precious.

I've met Bill a couple of times through birding. He is genuine when he says he is the only true celeb birder. He is the real deal and its great that he did tell it like it is... I wonder how he is today....

I was getting a feeling that he didn't enjoy being an English student that much early on, and him talking about how some viewers confuse the Goodies and Monty Python was so like when my mum would ask me about Genesis and the solo careers of same. She'd ask 'is that Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins singing?' when Labi Siffre's 'Something Inside So Strong' came on the radio. When the highlights from the Lyceum concert (circa Duke era) were shown on TV, she said after, 'they didn't do Games Without Frontiers'!

They always had to have big curtains in the background on interviews around that time.

We had no other choice as it was impossible for us to have a cyclorama background in the studio.

Spot on! Had to laugh at your observation, these curtains were everywhere.

Hard to believe anyone thought The Goodies was just a 'kids show'... As Bill mentioned, War Babies had mature overtones, The men dressed as mice - cf today's furries, Graham breeding dogs with chairs etc cf today's gender/identity issues, The humourous but irreverent digs at (now) King Charles 'big ears', The episode on Apartheid, Pirate Radio, The episode where they are buried in cement and age, Gunfight at OK Corral or whatever ot was called and how friendships and allegiances change, etc etc It is no wonder it was equally, if not more, a hit with adults (or big kids).

I just knew he would have to mention about the, 'joke', regarding bird watching. Which a) isn't funny and b) is totally inaccurate as all birds have 2 legs. He also eludes to, 'twitchers', who are those who only really bird watch when they hear about a rare species having been spotted somewhere and go out of their way to try and see it, even if it means trespassing on people's property, etc. which gives a bad name to the reasonable, sensible community of bird watchers.

King Edward's School, Birmingham is a 'Grammar School', it is a fee-paying day school, not really a public school as such (most public schools have mostly boarding pupils). JRR Tolkien attended it.

@@Avidcomp I agree he did 'man-spread' a bit, and I noticed that in a later interview when he was with Tim and Graeme promoting the Network release of the BBC and LWT episodes on DVD. I was thinking that he sat like the grandma in The Kumars at No.42.

We should all judge people on how they look, shouldn't we. 🙄 'Argumentative'? I have just watched a fascinating interview/conversation with a very interesting, often funny, honest, open-minded and articulate man. Perhaps you watched it and saw what you wanted/expected to see (for some reason) and you didn't actually see and hear what was really there.
