Bill Phillips was a true classic country singer. Another country singer better than many of the so called "stars". He deserved to be better known.

I played guitar for Bill in the mid-1980s. Down in South Carolina at powdersville opry House. That was real good days for me several of my friends have talked about the oil and didn't know what happened. PIP. WHAT A GREAT FRIEND BILL WAS

My ex wife is the Daughter of Herman Phillips, writer of Password by Kitty Wells, and Bill Phillips' brother. I have many fond and wonderful memories of Bill's visits to Western North Carolina. I know for a solid fact that this man could put away the fried chicken... LOL! Rest well Uncle Bill, I know I sure do miss you.

Absolutely loved this song. Enjoyed this song when I was a grad student in Detroit, Michigan in the late 60's. Thank you for posting.

Written for Phillips by Dolly Parton, after he took another of her songs, "Put it Off Until Tomorrow", to the top-ten earlier in 1966.

I reckon Porter & Dolly recorded this great tune as well.

Dolly recorded it solo and it was on her first solo album, Hello I'm Dolly in 1967. She never recorded it with Porter.

This is one of the first songs Dolly Parton wrote: You are known by the company you keep

Roger McNutt My apologies, I'm a Dolly fan too. Jack was a local musician who became known for performing this song. It fit his relationships so well, I guess everyone including self thought it was penned by Jack. When I discovered it on KZbin several years ago I thought a note of credit for Jack would be nice. I should have checked it out better. Both Jack and his wife Marg have since passed and and well remembered by their fans and friends in the Hamilton / Watertown ON area.
