The Chiucago Bulls came close to making the NBA finals without Jordan in 1994 when Jordan was out -for gambling- to pursue his love of baseball. If the Chicago had had a decent two-guard on the roster they might have made the final and even won a championship. It took me a long time to figure out what kind of player I had in mind and I finally settled on Jeff Hornacek as the model. Not a great, but good player and a consistent one. Yes, if the Bulls had had Jeff Hornacek or a comparable caliber of two guard, they might have won a championship without Jordan in 1994. Does that make Jordan a bad player? No it doesn't. Any team in any era would want Jordan on their roster. Nevertheless, some of the claims made about him are a bit overdone. There are many two guards and swingmen who have done certain things better than Jordan ever could have done them.

Exactly, Nate and all the others mentioned were excellent players. I laugh when I hear or read someone say either of these two didn't have any competition so their stats are inflated. Also, there were fewer teams then - less diluted talent pool and had to face each other more often. Finally, they wore the best shoes available - Converse All Stars. Not much support in those shoes!

They had a falling out the year Russell retired. In game 7 of that year's Finals, Wilt hurt his knee and had to come out of the game. His coach refused to put him back in and the Lakers lost by 2. After the game, when Russell was asked about it, he said something along the lines of unless Wilt was dead, he should never have come out of the game and that, if he (Russell) were Wilt's coach, he wouldn't have put him (Wilt) back in either.@@italianwaterice9594

There were great players around the NBA and other legends blossomed, and then there were these two legends. They were both humble in their own ways. Bill Russell would put it on paper just like he put it all on the floor. Wilt, as strong as he was, he was like a well oiled machine that never broke down and just kept pouring on the points for his team to win. Together, these guys changed the game of basketball forever and to many, they became the greatest.

Wilt conceded that, saying that those Celtic teams would not have been as successful if he was their center, instead of Russell. The last 4 seasons of his career, Russell faced off against Chamberlain in the playoffs. Wilt's team had a better regular season record all 4 times, which would seem to indicate that he had better players around him. The Celtics won 3 of the 4 times. The season after Russell retired, Boston had a losing record and finished in 6th place.

I've always wondered how many points Wilt would have had if he had the 3 point line. Hear me out. He shot his free throws from the top of the key because he was so big. Will did not have an outside shot. That was well-known. He could hit 20-footers in practice, but somehow it never worked out in the game. The three-point shot would not have helped him one bit any more than it helped Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Shaquille O'Neal. Robert Parish made exactly no three pointers in a 21-year career.

In terms of physicality Wilt had a career average of 45.8 minutes of play in a league with 48 minutes of regulation play. In a league were one 50 point game is pretty much a pass for the Hall of Fame he had 118 50 point games and the only 100 point game. So fairly good;).

While Bill Russell’s 11 rings including one as player/coach is unmatched I don’t think he is the greatest player of all time. Bill was a better team player than Wilt but Wilt was by far a more dominant and better individual player. Unfortunately for Wilt the better team will win over the better individual player almost every time. As far as high school goes Kareem won 3 straight titles, won 71 games in a row and went 79-2. I don’t think anyone is going to match that. As far as college goes, nobody is going match what Kareem did when he was at UCLA. Bill Walton comes close but nobody can match Lew Alcindor’s aka Kareem’s accomplishments.

My metric in deciding who among two players is better is to have them swap teams. Put Wilt on Russell's Celtics. How many titles do they win? Put Russell on Wilt's various teams. You know there are perceptions and there are details. When it comes to that era it never rings truer. The Celtics from 1955 onward or maybe even slightly before that were building for a championship team. Other than the St. Louis Hawks and them most teams in that era were just trying to make payroll and be a little in the black. The owners on most teams wanted one or two of these upcoming stars like Baylor, West, Robertson, Lucas, Bellamy etc. to bring in the crowds and make money. over 90% of owners were that way. Wilt of course was the big catch- everyone wanted him. Even Auerbach in the mid 50's tried to work something out but the territorial draft couldn't be overcome. So, after a year with the Globe Trotters Wilt was drafted by the Warriors in Philly. Eddie Gottlieb was the owner, and his orders were to pass the ball into the Dipper and let him go as much as possible. The style was 180 degrees different than Boston. Boston was built to have a team in the truest sense. These other greats especially Wilt were commodities to keep franchises afloat. Boston and to a lesser extent the Hawks were the teams that really focused TOTALLY on winning before anything else. So, whenever Wilt played, he alone was expected by the media and fans to bring a title. It was so unrealistic. Despite the ridiculous expectation guys like Baylor and West and> Wilt alone on the Warriors in the early years almost beat Boston losing by a point or two here and there. A great book on all this is Terry Pluto's "Tall Tales". So, my point is context is really important for that era or any era. The Celtics and Russell were great - remember Russell was snatched up by Red from St. Louis after the draft due to lingering racism in St. Louis and some members of that team for two very good players in a trade. Russell easily could have been paired up with Bob Pettit in St. Louis. context really clarifies what went on. Its history. These two created it along with West Baylor the Big O Bellamy Lucas and later Lew- Kareem. Read some good books from those eras and see the circumstances from the players, coaches' owners and media to get a flavor of it all.

I can't help but shake my head at how under appreciated Bill Russell is. Tom Brady was universally anointed the greatest across all sports because he won 7 rings. It's a pretty silly argument comparing individuals on teams across a spectrum of unrelated sports then proclaim one above all else. Bill Russell had 11 rings yet he gets overlooked, unfortunately.

Some folks here do not realize just how STRONG Wilt was. Wilt did track and field in college and was a high jump and shot-put champ. He was the first NBA player to employ an intense weight training program. That is why by the time he got to the Sixers; he was already over 300 pounds. That was MUSCLE people! To see the man in person? He could literally block out the sun! He once came to camp with Golden State weighing almost 330 pounds! By the start of the season, he lost back down to the 300 mark. He gave guys like Nate Thurmond and Bob Lanier serious problems. Even 7'2", 275 Lb. Artis Gilmore, a man considered to be the strongest not named Wilt, was impressed with him. He was too athletic and strong. Lanier tells of the story when he was a rookie in Detroit, and he was getting extra-physical with Wilt under the basket. He stated that Wilt "Turns around, picks me up like I'm a little coffee cup, moves me out of the way, and says "Son, don't do that anymore!" Bob was 6'11", and 288 lbs.!!! Shaq stated his best bench was 475 pounds. Wilt regularly benched well over 500, with Arnold witnessing him benching 550 pounds, both at Gold's Gym and on the set of 'Conan the Destroyer'. Even at the age of 59, he could still get 465; just ten short of Shaq's all-time best. Even Kobe says the list is WILT, HIMSELF, and MIKE.

Bill Russell was also a fantastic athlete. He declined to join the Olympic team for high jump in 1956 to focus on basketball. The eventual champion was Charlie Dumas, who Russell had tied for 1st with when they squared off in the high jump that year at the West Coast Relays. Despite being an amazing athlete himself, Russell has said he needed to use every trick in the book to try and contain Wilt.

Wilt went an entire season and played every minute. Davis cannot even play 2 months without missing entire games. Durant could not and would not ever go into the low block with Wilt he would get destroyed. He also could not shoot over Wilt. Wilt blocked Kareems sky hook twice in a row. Durants jumper would be childs play for him.

Here's the thing about Wilt. Just make up a lie about what he did. Some outrageous bullshit lie of a stat. Then go look at the actual stat... 9 times out of 10, the lie wasn't as good as the actual stat was. i.e. "In one season he averaged 45 points a game!!!!" Nope the lie isn't big enough, because in one season he averaged 50 points.

Russell has zero finals MVP awards. That award did not exist until Russell’s last year. That year it was awarded to a player on the losing team, Jerry West. The other thing is while Wilt did play with some hall of fame players too Bill Russell’s Celtics were better teams and had a better coach.

@@rightreasons7908 tennis features 2 players in the court unless it’s doubles. I’m an nba game there is 10 players on a court with players subbing in and out. No subs in tennis. NBA coaches also have much more accessibility to the players than tennis coaches do during games. Basketball is a team sport and rings are contingent on things such as front office and health. Russell having more rings does not equate to him being better.

Actually there is evidence regarding his vertical leap. While he was a student at kansas look magazine visited and did a feature on him. They measured his standing reach at 9 foot 6 and his height after jumping at 13 feet 3 inches. It was published in the magazine back in 1958. That's a 45 inch vertical leap. It's also 3 inches higher than the top of the backboard. Chamberlain was a track star in college and competed in national & international meets. There's a photo you can find online of Chamberlain demonstrating his vertical leap jumping straight up against a high bar that was set at 6 feet 10 inches. In the photo Chamberlain jumps more than half of his own body length. Since he's 85 inches tall, that means it's a vertical leap somewhere in the mid 40s, consistent with what was measured at Kansas University by Look Magazine. Both of those documented jumps are actual real evidence. In addition to the fact that Chamberlain has known to have cleared 6 foot 7 and officially sanctioned NCAA track meets when going over the high jump bar.
