A giant of a man in every sense. He will be sorely missed. Modest, intelligent, truthful but never backing down when provoked. And such an amazing basketball player.

For pure athletic ability, the GOAT would have to be Dr. J, Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain or LeBron. But for the ability to lead a team to victory, it's clearly Bill Russell. Babe Ruth won 7 championships (in a segregated league). Tom Brady won 7 super bowls. Wayne Gretzky won 4 Stanley Cups. Russell won 11 championships, dominated the 1960s even more than Jordan dominated the 1990s, and one of those championships was against Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor.

Exactly, his resume defies belief and if people truly knew the depths of his winning, from HS on, they'd be a lot less GOAT debates around. Thanks as always for the comment bro.

@@ViewTheRightThing Part of the issue is there simply isn't as much footage or highlights from the 1960s as there is of Bird, Magic, Jordan from their era.

@@ViewTheRightThing I was looking at footage of that famous "Havlicek stole the ball" play. Chamberlain had just dunked the ball, bringing the Sixers to within one point. The Celtics had no fouls to give so any foul was going to mean one of the Sixers going to the line and having a chance to win the game. Then horror Russell tries to inbound the ball but hits a wire overhead. The Sixers get the ball back under their own basket. They only need two points and they have Wilt Chamberlain. They get Hal Greer to inbounds Everybody remembers how Havlicek lurked a few feet away from Chet Walker out of sight and tipped the ball over to Sam Jones to break up the play and win the game. But what's the obvious question? Why did Greer try to pass the ball to Chet Walker and not Wilt Chamberlain? The answer? Russell had Chamberlain so completely locked down Greer lost his nerve and went for Walker, falling right into Havlicek's carefully set trap. That play could have just as easily been remembered as "Russell smothers Chamberlain and forces a turnover."
