In an attempt at attracting a more bountiful, marketable demographic, CBS Sports had another brilliant idea…
Red on Roundball.
From the mid 70’s to 1990, CBS was the home of the NBA on network television. Having to endure the slumping league attendance, imaging and ultimately network ratings, CBS gets a lot of credit and literally brought the golden era of the 1980’s into households all over the globe. Basketball was now global.
But there was a time when CBS Sports basketball coverage was on the brink of being cancelled. Poor ratings had turned to tape delayed broadcasts of the leagues World Series of basketball, the NBA Finals.
In an attempt to resurrect the once thriving league, CBS rolled out at attracting a more affluent, younger (whiter) audience with their pre/half and sometimes post game feature, Red on Roundball.
Need younger fans? Put an old Jewish man in an NBA warm up and have him boss around some athletic black basketball players.
Sounds doomed but guess what? Besides the epic broadcasting of the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird NBA Finals matchups every spring, Red on Roundball remains one of the more memorable and beloved segments from the CBS era.
CLNS history vault has too many episodes of Red on Roundball so time to empty the vault and free up some of my basement space by converting what we got on hand to digital HD, and scout out what we don’t have from our neighborhood NBA History channels right here on KZbin.
Anyway, calm down, chill out, relax with some Red on Roundball accompanied by the relaxing sessions provided by our partners at CALM (trial offer below)
Cheers.
