An Iron Maiden is a torture device. It's basically an iron box vaguely human shaped with spikes on the inside to impale you when you are locked in it. It's also the name of a heavy metal band. I saw this film when it came out in theaters, I was studying in University at the time.

Back when this came out I was in college, and went home for a weekend visit. Some of my old friends and I went to see this, and I thought that it was just horrible. A week later I went on a phenomenally bad date, but met another girl. I ended up giving her a ride back to the dorms, and she forgot her book bag in my car. I returned it the next day, and sat there chatting with her. I mentioned how bad I thought this movie was. A few minutes later one of her friends came by to see if she wanted to go to the movies...to see Bill & Ted! We looked at each other and laughed so hard. We've been married now for 33 years, and yeah, Bill & Ted finally grew on me.

This was primarily shot in and around Phoenix, Arizona. I was 17 when it came out, but 14/15 the summer they were filming here. The Circle K (convnience store/bodega) was recently sold by the chain to a local merchant, and they hosted a B&T viewing on the outside wall of the store before it closed. It was most triumphant.

An 'iron maiden' is a torture device like an upright-standing metal sarcophagus shaped to human outline, and featuring spikes on the inside front and back, which when closed will perforate the occupant. Its metal construction also allows it to be placed above a firepit or a bed of hot coals.

It's also the name of an 80s metal band which is why Bill and Ted were confused... well, more confused...
@lurkerrekrul
@lurkerrekrul Жыл бұрын
It should also be noted that there's some question if it was a real device. I know that examples of iron maidens do exist, but nobody is really sure if they were actually used during medieval times, or if they were created later as a way to "spice up" tales of that time period.

"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K." I think my favorite line! I also really appreciate that the history (including the languages spoken) is pretty accurate. Well, with the exception of Genghis Khan...he's kind of just a caricature. Rufus is played by the very famous George Carlin and one of the three people sitting in the future is Clarence Clemons (sax player for the E Street Band). Both have sadly passed but they were legends.

Bill had a minor "Oedipal Complex", meaning he was attracted to his mother, Missy. Alex Winter (Bill) really got typecast as this kind of character and is known for the Bill & Ted films and as a supporting character in "The Lost Boys". My favorite Keanu film is, of course, "The Matrix." I probably saw it whenever it was first released to video.

Bill told Siggy that he just had a minor Oedipal complex. In Greek mythology, Oedipus was a character who fell in love with his mother (not quite that simple, though) in an inappropriate way, so in psychology the term "Oedipal complex" is used for this condition. Of course, in Bill's case it's his stepmother, who is barely older than he is, so it's understandable (and in Oedipus' case, he didn't know it was his mother, but his name is still used in psychology anyway).

An Iron Maiden is a medieval torture/execution device. It’s a box, roughly the size of a human body, with the walls and doors lined with spikes. A person would be forced inside, and when the maiden is closed, the spikes are driven into the body just enough to make them bleed to death Also, both sequels to this are also awesome

An iron maiden, as from being a heavy metal rock group, was a medieval torture device. It's shaped to be able to put a human inside. It was made of two pieces joined together by hinges, and had metal spikes welded on the inside. The victim was placed standing up against the back of the device. Once inside, the front was closed, kind of like a door, and locked.

I was raised to use 'anxious' as a word meaning basically anticipating, or excitement about some event. Only around age 15 did i realize it also meant fearful or worried. So, maybe that's a North American usage, that doesn't translate elsewhere, or perhaps it was just that before the 1990s, it hadn't become such common byword in pop psychology.

Nice one again, Dawn, you got right into the spirit of the teen humour. I saw this in the early 90s, not so long after release, but I was already middle-aged. As a former HS history teacher, I was strangely unoffended. An overlooked gem in the Keanu catalogue is 1990's 'Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter' retitled in America as 'Tuning In'. Reeves actually isn't very good in it imo, but you get an outrageous turn from Peter Falk with great support from Barbara Hershey. In 'The Gift' (2000) Reeves finds his metier as a 'heavy', though it's not a large part. It stars Cate Banchett and is not to be confused with a 2016 film of the same name. The first mentioned is one I know will appeal to your quirky sense of humour.

Another film with a young Keano is "Parenthood". He doesn't star, but has a decent part in the film, playing a very similar character. For how well it was received at the time, it's kind of been forgotten about. It's another comedy, but not in the same style as Bill & Ted, but good all the same. It also stars Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and a few others.

"I Love You To Death" (1990) has a stellar cast, which includes a very raggedy-looking Keanu. His role is a supporting one, but the whole thing is very worthwhile, and his appearance is simply priceless. "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993) has a very pretty style, and features Reeves as the spiteful Prince John The Bastard.

Keanu Reeves/Ted/neo/Wick♥️ and might I add a Canadian He was abandoned by his father at 3 years old and grew up with 3 different stepfathers. He is dyslexic. His dream of becoming a hockey player was shattered by a serious accident. His daughter died at birth. His wife died in a car accident. His best friend, River Phoenix, died of an overdose. His sister has leukemia. And with everything that has happened, Keanu Reeves never misses an opportunity to help people in need. When he was filming the movie "The Lake House," he overheard the conversation of two costume assistants; One cried because he would lose his house if he did not pay $ 20,000 and on the same day Keanu deposited the necessary amount in the woman's bank account; He also donated stratospheric sums to hospitals. In 2010, on his birthday, Keanu walked into a bakery and bought a brioche with a single candle, ate it in front of the bakery, and offered coffee to people who stopped to talk to him. After winning astronomical sums for the Matrix trilogy, the actor donated more than $ 50 million to the staff who handled the costumes and special effects - the true heroes of the trilogy, as he called them. He also gave a Harley-Davidson to each of the stunt doubles. A total expense of several million dollars. And for many successful films, he has even given up 90% of his salary to allow the production to hire other stars. In 1997 some paparazzi found him walking one morning in the company of a homeless man in Los Angeles, listening to him and sharing his life for a few hours. Most stars when they make a charitable gesture they declare it to all the media. He has never claimed to be doing charity, he simply does it as a matter of moral principles and not to look better in the eyes of others. This man could buy everything, and instead every day he gets up and chooses one thing that cannot be bought: Be a good person.♥️

I watched this movie in 1989 when I was 17. In retrospect, I don't feel as though I watched many movies during the 1970s through the 1990s, but for whatever reasons, I was lucky enough to have happened to watch so many of the classics that are often requested for reactions when they were in theaters for the first (and for most of them the only) time. Some movies really benefit from the large screen and/or the sound system, but mostly it was the experience of watching it with lots of other people that made and still makes the theatrical experience special. For me, this works best with movies that are either very sad or funny (or both--it's rare but possible, like _Ghost_ ), although others may feel different. Maybe I'm weird, but for me action movies don't tend to benefit as much from commercial theaters (unless they're really funny, and some are).

Hi Dawn, Great reaction btw! I first watched this on video from the local video shop in 1989 with a few friends. Saw it on the rack and thought the cover looked fun.....became part of my movie history. Fun fact for you; Joan of Arc was played by Jane Wiedlin, who was one of the founding members of the Californian all-girl band The Go-Go's (along with Belinda Carlisle). Have you planned to react to 'Point Break'? Keanu is excellent playing alongside Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey. Cheers! Kev from South of the Border

To be more specific, it's a metal box shaped like a person and lined with spikes. Person goes in. Lid is shut. Person is impaled.

Such a classic 80's movie that makes no sense but is such a fun ride. I saw it as a kid and I remember laughing at the over-the-top acting and absurd plot. Just a great time.

I think what’s funny about it is it’s details make sense even if the rest of it doesn’t. Idk about over the top acting, er, perhaps a bit, but a lot of the actors play it as straight as they can. Which also makes it hilarious. Billy the Kid and Socrates becoming besties? Freud cramping their style? Preposterous, but why not? Even Lincoln spelling out his name LOL.

There is a real pop star in the cast, by the way. Joan of Arc is played by Jane Wiedlin, the bouncy rhythm guitarist of The Go-Go's, who also wrote some of their biggest hits.

Actual musicians in this movie - - The Three Most Important People In The World are: Clarence Clemons (sax player for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band), Fee Waybill (lead singer of The Tubes) and Martha Davis (lead singer of The Motels). Joan of Arc is portrayed by Jane Wiedlin (guitar/vocals for The Go-Go's). Later, Keanu learned to play bass and formed a band called Dogstar.

You should check out River's Edge (1987). One of Keanu's first movies. Loosely based on a true story (i believe), it also stars Crispin Glover. (George McFly from Back to the Future.)

Hi Dawn. Nice to see you enjoying another great movie. What is a (IRON MAIDEN) I hear you ask, well there is the Metal Band (IRON MAIDEN) formed in 1975 to present day. Then you have the Medieval torture device called the (IRON MAIDEN) which is a human shaped Metal coffin that stands upright with a door that opens on hinges, there are two versions of this device. The first version has very shape spikes in the back of it on the inside and the hollow door also has spikes on the inside, you put someone in to the device and shut the door impaling the person inside the IRON MAIDEN and they would die a slow painful death. The second version of this device is somewhat the same accept in this version the spikes are Retractable and can slowly be turned by a crank to impale someone. Hoped this answered your question.

This was awesome when it came out while in high school but there was no way anyone could've known how big Keanu would get after this. One word from this I still use randomly today is So-crates. Not sure why it's still funny but it is and not sure how I end up in conversations that works in but.......?
