Carl himself liked this album a lot- At a workshop in London he said, that they only made a few hundred copies, sold a few to US , a few to europe and that was it. It nevery issued again. Nobody knows, why. I like it, because it shows great virtuosity and beauty and at the same time doesn't have the agressivity, found on many young jazz trombinists records nowadays. The record was initiated by a japanese record company, that also provided the car. They approached Watrous and then he asked Carl to do it.

Both are vituoso jazz trombonists for the ages. Bill is awesome (as usual) in his technical brilliance, but Carl's improvisational lyricism is pure poetry, and just a liitle easier for the layman to enjoy. Before anyone thinks he is a trombonist, he should listen to these gentlemen...and despair.

Pure artistry and perfection.

the peak of playing for both of these great players. I listened to this on my walkman constantly back in the 80s. thankfully for the rest of us, these guys got together with a rhythm section and recorded some tunes.

a very rare vinyl album, not issued on CD. Properly hard to find an expensive if you were lucky. I will always keep my copy...:-) But enjoy the music here on KZbin (I've collected Carl for more than 30 years...)

why are you people grieving over these phenomenal players? they should inspire you to play , not frustrate you.

Sad, outrageous. The trombone is certainly no "Rodney Dangerfield" as played by either of these two giant polymaths. The American public no longer: 1. values instrumental music; 2. responds to the pulse, word, or meaning of "swing." two losses from which some of us can't recover. On the other hand, a rap "artist" or stand-up comedian can, through the power of Social Media, attract a crowd to fill Yankee Stadium.

The album was actually released in Japan only. I've got a copy of a copy, but the actual album can go for hundreds in mint condition.

Am I insane? Or do I hear 3 trombones at 7:08?

Please! I've been looking everywhere...where can I find a copy of this album? Is there a vintage album search service that might have it?

"Bill Watrous and Carl Fontana" is listed in allmusic.com, but I find no reference to it on Amazon or iTunes. Tombonists simply get no respect. Even a lot of J&K never made it to CD or is out of print, as are many of JJ' solo albums. (Too bad he never made an album with Coltrane.)

In my opinion, JJ doesn't hold a candle to these two. Not sure why there's any hype about JJ.
