My father bought me a (Corporation) Bach 16M for Christmas when I was ten years old, because that’s what Watrous played at the time, and 45 years later it’s still one of the greatest, most versatile instruments I’ve ever owned, just as his recordings have aged so well over the years. I’m not sure anyone ever quite mastered the trombone with so much ease and effortless control as Bill Watrous.

Bill's centered resonance on every note is amazing. Every situation.

Bill played so well that night. He used my big band on this trip and I helped look after him. I had the wierdest time that night at The Pizza Express. Middway through the night a guy fell into the club with a Tbn case. I recognised Al Grey straight away, he was wasted! Bill beckoned me over and asked me to keep him away from the stage. I then spent the night B*ll Sh*tting my 1st hero to keep him from spoiling the recording of my then hero !

Again, making it sound so easy, when trombonists know that this beyond reasonable mastery. ❤️

I have the LP from 1982 and great to find it on KZbin. Wow , what an intro to When Your Liver Has Gone..never fails to light up. Envious of those who saw the performance. A great advert for this wonderful art form we call jazz
