I set up two spots for the best possible odds for late season success. In this episode, I talk about which one I will hunt and why. I discuss the importance of not making any mistakes because you may only get one good chance in the late season. Finally, I talk about this poor forecast as relates to late season hunting and how I plan to deal with it. Good luck.

Hunted last night (18th) close to bedding on trails leading to fields. Saw 1 doe and a mobile muzzleloader hunter, which I’m sure didn’t help. Only cold day on forecast from now until after the New Year. But, I did check 4 trail cam in the area on the way out. My #1 was all over them. Alive and kicking but without the cold temps to get him moving it will make a tough situation damn near impossible. Headed back to PA for Christmas but hopefully when I get back to PA the bottom will fall out of the temps and I’ll be back at it. Let’s hope, for both our sakes. Merry Christmas Bill and family!

Thanks for the support and the comment. I think the east/southeast winds come in with low pressure areas and the weather pattern is what the deer react to.

Bill , when you have a property rich in oaks (acorn crop), do you think it is advantageous to log large oak trees. Not only will this provide additional income, increase cover for the deer and help your access in parts, but it will also create more predicted movement toward food plots planted. This is of course looking forward years to come.. Curious to hear your feedback on this theory.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
Yes, maybe. It is super important to really think that through because you can't put those 100 year old trees back once they are gone. It is useful to log a property, I am not a tree hugger, but you have to do it very thoughtfully when it comes to oak trees since they do produce acorns and the deer benefit from them even if they make it harder to get the deer on food plots. I still feel that you a make a property as good as possible for the deer and then find ways to hunt them rather than making it as good as possible for hunting and then hope they are there. With that in mind, having thick cover is important, but so is having acorns. I struck that balance on the farm in southern Iowa by taking a moderate harvest of oak trees (I needed the money to help make payments on the farm) but then focused all my TSI work on other less desirable species. That seemed to work really well. Very thick and still lots of oaks to keep growing and dropping acorns.

@@bill-winke yes I remember following along for those stories way back when in South Iowa. I think you’ll find a happy balance here at this property for food and cover! Good luck and excited to see what you decide over the next offseason. Those property improvement episodes are by far my favorite, you did a great job last offseason by the way it was produced.
@Biker_1991
@Biker_1991 10 ай бұрын
As a logger, Yes. Thinning of the oaks, not clearing , is the key. Not implementing a diameter cut but a well planned select cut . Take out the smaller diameter maple ,gum, and 50-75% of the oaks will make the harvest not only profitable for you but allow the struggling seedlings to compete for sunlight while the remaining tops will protect those seeds that get started. The trails that are created in the process make perfect linear food plots while the tracked areas left by logging equipment will sprout seedlings in no time. The stem count will increase dramatically and what appeared to be a mess becomes a deer haven.

@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
I do believe that. It has plenty of power. But if it gets too steep or slippery the tires might spin. However that is the case with any product in the same weight range. It weighs less than an ATV. Ground clearance on the front axle is a bit low in my opinion but will be fine on trail.

Why wouldn’t you brush hog the corn you knocked down?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
It kind of crosses a line for me. It is legal here, but I have never done it. I think they are nearly as apt to eat it on the ground on the ear as if I had shredded it. The biggest benefit of knocking it down in the first place is that you can shoot and also it gives the deer a focal point for their feeding - a place to start. They will eat corn off the the stalk just fine, but it is really hard to shoot into a standing corn field, even from a tree stand, let alone from a ground blind. Do knocking it down, where it is legal, works really well. Good luck.

same here! i went from getting 75-100 pictures a day on 4 cameras late summer and early fall to maybe 10 pics a day now. daylight pictures are almost nonexistent. i havent hardly even hunted this property so pressure isnt the problem. the only explanation i can come up with is a huge acorn crop and little to no rain all fall that would normally rot a good percentage of them.

James, it is the most I have ever seen too. Even in the areas where the deer are eating them every day, there are still viable (not hollow or rotten) acorns on the ground! It is amazing really. Late season is always a real SOB, not sure why but very rarely do I even see a deer while hunting, even on a food source. I don’t use cameras because I’m hunting public grounds but it seems to me that the deer must go almost completely nocturnal after the firearms season here in NE WI, it’s almost like winning the lottery to harvest a good buck during the late season.

It is true. They feed at night and bed during the day to conserve energy. Predators are more active this time of year too, and the deer like to bed in the thick cover during daylight to avoid predators. Deer just move less this time of year to conserve energy.

Bob, I have asked the game warden a few times about it. It's not considered baiting in Iowa. I always thought it crossed a line when you mow it, but the game warden said that is also legal. I still don't do it though. Knocking corn down hasn't made any difference on this farm because the deer have more than enough to eat.

Not many bucks older than two, so if I am going to stick to my goal of shooting 5 year old and older bucks, it will be a few more years. There are a few that will be shooters next year too - like that one we are calling Jordan Buck. But overall, not many bucks that are "close" to the right age. They only have one camo pattern, but a number of different pieces of clothing. If the pattern looks different on a different pieces, it is because of the color of the background material itself. I know that it looks awesome against oaks, but it would be probably a touch light against dark evergreens. However, we have been wearing this stuff in cedar trees and it looks very good there too. I think as long as you stay close to the trunk of the tree, it will look good against just about any tree type. Good luck.

Some people say that having dogs running your property is worse than having human intrusion.maybe thats part of the issue?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
No, those people are wrong. I am 100% sure that is not much of a factor in this case. The only time it matters is if the dogs are actually running deer. At our farm in Southern Iowa, our dogs were free ranging and they covered 40 acres around the house every day. Yet, the best hunting on that entire big farm, was consistently within that area, 150 yards from the house. The deer know what is threatening and what is not - they figure it out very quickly. Human intrusion is way worse than dogs, unless again, the dogs are chasing. In addition, my neighbor down there had free ranging dogs too and they were all over the farm. Not sure if they were chasing deer or not, but the deer never left. Plus, there are a lot of coyotes here. Coyotes are much more of a threat to the deer than these dogs. If the deer ran from every spot where they smelled coyotes they would be running 24/7 on this farm. The main thing is understanding what the deer have come to accept as unthreatening and what they fear. It is pretty easy to figure that out if you think about it long enough. Good luck.

I was in the Mountains of Southern Ohio this past weekend and I couldn't believe the amount of acorns still on the ground. It's like there are so many the deer... and squirrels can't even eat them all. Maybe to your point a few weeks ago, that's the issue. Seems to me Acorns are a double edged sword. Having a few trees here and there that produce is a great thing. But if there is a bumper crop of them, it makes figuring the deer out difficult. Looking forward to following a long this late season!
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын

@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
I do miss knowing there are multiple shooters on the farm most years. It is fun to know that you have options. I don't need a lot of deer to enjoy deer hunting. The old farm had so many neighbors (27 different neighbors) that it was a bit of a nightmare to keep everyone happy. Things are much easier here from that standpoint. The terrain in southern Iowa is easier to hunt too (not as much elevation change), but is not as pretty as the one I own now. I wouldn't change anything at this point, but mainly because this move got me "back home" to the area where I grew up hunting. That is worth something too. From a pure deer hunting standpoint, there is no doubt that southern Iowa is much better then northern Iowa. I think if someone is buying land in Iowa purely to shoot big deer without any other consideration, then southern Iowa is a much better (and less expensive) choice.

@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
I am sure the deer will smell where the dogs have been, but I don't think they will care. The farm has a lot of coyotes so the deer here are used to smelling "canines". I think if the dogs chased deer it would be different, but these deer don't have any bad experiences with these dogs. My advice would be to take the dog when you walk. In the end, we buy the land to enjoy it and only part of that enjoyment is the hunting. I really enjoy doing stuff on the farm with the dogs. I will address the cell cameras later, but the summary is that I am not sure I want to involve that much technology right now. I am just making the decision slowly. I am a bit old school in some ways - I don't want to make it too easy or take away the thrill just because of all the feedback I can get from cell cameras. Plus, reception here would be very spotty. Again, I may change my position. Good luck.

I am hoping to see movement late in the day. If you are in a blind the wind is not a big deal, but it is miserable if you are going to be in a tree. Wind chill here is low single digits right now.

Sounds like cover is your lowest drop in the bucket at this time of year. Late season deer are attracted to properties with high stem counts and cover adjacent to food so maybe your neighbors have more established cover in December that’s holding the deer on your neighborhood.

Then I should be winning because all the farms around me are cattle farms - not much in the timber that the cows haven't eaten. I think the issue in general is that all these farms (mine too) have been cattle farms for decades so the deer numbers were never very high in this overall area. But, you are right. Quality cover really holds deer. I will improve my cover in stages, (52 acres of TSI scheduled for this winter) but overall, the cover is surprisingly good. When I looked at this farm to buy it, I didn't expect to like it. I was shocked that it had the quality of habitat that it did given it was a cattle farm. The guy that ran the cows on here is now a good friend and I think it was good because he was very careful to rotate the cows and not overgraze it.

You have too much corn u should of had someone combine 3/4 of it

I thought about that, but I do think that before the winter is over, they will be hammering it. Maybe it won't be until February, past the season, but I want the deer to be as healthy as possible. I may have someone combine it in March if there is still corn there.

You certainly have the foo on the farm Bill, it seems like a matter of time before they start hitting it. I usually get some very good daylight activity on food right after the season ends in SW WI...looking like a repeat with temps in the 40s and 50s through Christmas

That is what I am seeing too. I am going to hunt tonight and then maybe Tuesday in a different spot hoping for a doe or two. I have a couple of people that want the meat and we like to eat them too. Good luck.

Sure looks to be challenging without the normal NE IA cold and snow cover! Tagged my second buck here Sat eve on a NW front following an all night rain front. That being said, this 6 yr old was the only buck in the food plot I was hunting. Food plots are not loading up with deer, like last year when we had wicked summer/fall drought and zero temps going into Christmas.

Congrats! That is great. It was super cold last year and my plots were full. Now, they aren't even using them. That may change, but late season will be tough until they do. I could hunt in the timber, but it is really tough to do that when hunting only one or two bucks because here, at least, they will bed in a lot of places and the odds of spooking deer is much higher than the odds of picking the right spot. Waiting game.

Is there a reason why your not using cell cameras on the farm?

Is there a reason why you prefer old style cameras (removing SD cards) as opposed to cellular, other than cost? Seems more intrusive.

Nothing would make the hunting easy on this place. I don't use them because I like getting out on the farm. Using a cell camera would eliminate one more phase of the hunt that I enjoy. Maybe someday I will use them, but for now, I like keeping a bit of mystery in the hunt.

Bill, If I understand correctly, you cannot bowhunt during the Iowa gun season. The seems unusual as in many states you can use a more primitive weapon in the gun season if you choose to do so. I often hunt PA gun season with my bow. Do you have any insight into why Iowa does not allow bowhunting during gun season? (especially private land like your land) Just curious.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
You are correct. I am guessing it based on safety since Iowa's drive hunting tradition runs very strong and it would not be safe for a guy to be sitting up in a tree when a drive goes through. In the past, everything got driven during the gun season, but only in the most recent 20 years, or so, have some landowners cut that off. So, I think it is based on safety concerns.

No cell reception or do you like riding around pulling SD cards?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 10 ай бұрын
Cell service is very spotty here. I do like checking them. I just like being out on the farm and it gives the dogs a chance to run. As much as I love deer hunting, (and I realize that checking cameras can negatively affect that if done wrong), I still want to enjoy the property so being able to get out on it is a blessing. Someday I will go to cell (or similar) cameras, but for now, I am still just enjoying the time afield. Good luck.
