My best spots to hunt over the years have been small openings in the timber close to larger fields. The deer stage in these small plots before going out to feed, producing close range shots in daylight - the perfect recipe for bowhunting success. These spots are also good in the morning too, as this hunt demonstrates, as the deer filter back into the bedding areas for the day. It is the first place they are on their feet in the evening and the last place they are on their feet in the morning.

Thanks. I really appreciate it. I will get back to work here, just not sure what I plan to produce as I am pretty well burned out with having a cameraman follow me all fall. I will come up with a media mix that will hopefully be both educational, entertaining and relatively easy to produce. Have a great day and thanks again for all the support.

Thanks Wes. I need to figure out what all I will be uploading here. I still don't want to have a cameraman with me all fall ever again, but I may be able to do some video blogs without a lot of in tree footage. Just a some pans and discussions of setups, etc. I will try to produce something that is at least educational if nothing else.

@@bill-winke I think a lot of guys enjoy your habitat talk, property set-up, strategy, etc. A lot of this you can do by yourself, and I know the viewers will enjoy it. I think a lot of us get tired over the over produced videos and are seeking realistic content presented in a relatable manner. Can't wait to see what you have in store.

As a traditional shooter I don't see many videos of compound shooters missing there shots. Glad you showed the whole hunt, congrats on a great buck!

Allen, unfortunately I have had my share of misses. But we can learn from them as long as we can figure out the real cause. I aimed low thinking he would drop at the sound of the shot to load his legs (as most bucks do when you stop them). It becomes a real factor in impact and aim point at 30 yards, such as where this buck was standing. But he didn't drop until the arrow hit the ground beyond him. I would do the exact same thing the next time because at least 75% of them will drop in that situation. Live and learn.

I had a similar situation this past year. The buck I was after came into my shooting lane. As I was trying to draw my bow I noticed he was moving out of the camera lane so I tried to use my elbow to adjust the camera. As I did that my bow slipped out and the buck just stared at me. I drew again as he's looking at me and put one through him. The sun was directly behind me and I was stuffed up in a cedar tree so I don't think he could tell what was going on. Got SUPER lucky! Love the Skinny story!

Basically what I was trying to relate to was that Skinny stared at you as you drew again and the rest is history!

Garrett, yes it was amazing that he didn't bolt. I drew when he was staring at me because I knew he was not going to stay around for long since the doe had already left and I had nothing to lose. That buck was really lovesick that morning. He didn't do anything I would expect a buck of his age to do.

Thanks for the note. Yes, I will never forget that hunt. He is one of two bucks that I ever killed on the second arrow. Most never stick around.

Hey Bill, what broadhead were you using on this hunt? Awesome buck, what a brute!
@bill-winke

I believe that was still the Rocket Steelhead. We went to Wasp the following year because Rocket was no longer available and the Wasp Jak-Hammer was the closest thing to that design.

60 acres is a realistic size farm for many deer hunters. Great advise about staying conservative and careful until the time is right. I’ve killed big bucks for years by doing this very thing. Glad to see you’re putting out content again. I enjoyed this hunt even if I’ve seen it before?
@bill-winke

Thanks Brad. I am sometimes careful to a fault, but over the years I have learned that as long as the deer don't know you are hunting them, you have a chance. Once they figure it out, things get really tough fast.

As a Bow hunter I would of like to see where he was hit, and how far he traveled. We can all learn from these hits.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. He was hit in the liver. He went about 100 yards and bedded down.

Thanks for the reply. He didn't go far for a liver hit, good thing he wasn't pushed. Gorgeous Buck. Hit one a few years back slightly guatering towards me, hiting one lung, liver and intestines and we gave him 6 hours and he was still able to cover 3 miles. Good thing we used a tracking dog ! We couldn't believe how hard he pushed.

Bill I noticed you were walking in as it was already cracking daylight. Is that something you normally do?
@bill-winke

I do wait til I can see the ground, but we got a late start that morning so it was even more light than normal. I do like to at least be able to just see the ground so we can walk fast and quiet.

I remember when I first saw this hunt and to this day and I can't figure out how that buck wasn't gone after the first shot or how he didn't drop. Amazing how ruttng bucks don't have fear sometimes
