That much arrow sticking out on a soft spot of a deer should be a learning experience. Time to re-evaluate your arrow/broadhead setup and make sure you get two holes. Definitely a stressful experience on those kinds of hits.

Nearly every commercial box blind isn’t made for bow hunting. They usually aren’t high ceiling enough to stand up and draw the bow like we do when practicing or can do in a tree stand or on a ladder stand. And the windows are terrible. Noisy sliding things you need to leave open. And the box material is so noisy if you even touch it almost. Window should swing and unlock easily and almost silently. And that’s why I made two custom bow hunting box blinds on platforms 16 feet up. 6’x8’ x 82” ceiling height. Heated. Rubber matting floor for chairs that roll. Custom made windows that swing open dead silent. Each cost less than $200 plus my time. I’m 72 years old and these will last 10 years for me to hunt comfortably.

Bill a little over 15 years ago I did load up my truck and move to Beverly, Hills that is. I moved from the dirt roads of Shaftsbury Hollow Vermont, no stop lights in my town to one block north of Sunset Boulevard. My wife and I rolled the dice on a job offer. I was 46 at the time. Obviously it worked out. Fortunately I can shoot my bow here and still able to hunt. Took a nice black bear a few weeks ago and a mule deer Sunday. I have had a subscription to Peterson’s and reading your articles for ever. I have 4 points for Iowa so I will be heading to the Des Moines area in the coming years with November 7 somewhere in my time. Glad you are back on KZbin.

I hate to be negative because that’s an awesome deer my friend. Congratulations buddy on getting him and finding him. I just hope you learned something about taking that shot because it was terrible watching it. I’ve taken that shot a few times. I can be done without even getting guts. Aim at the shoulder always with every shot. Doing so gives you more room for error. Plus you don’t let a deer walk out without flatting at least one tire preferably both when possible.

I’m curious to know more about the shot. For being at 20 yards seems like the arrow should have penetrated more. I played the shot in slow motion and it looks like the arrow barely went in more than a quarter of the way. I’m a fairly new bow hunter so this might be a dumb question, but still curious about it.
@ethan_stubbs Жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, thanks for watching. The conclusion I came to on this hunt was that I hit the deer dead center on a rib bone. I was shooting a 4mm arrow with a 50 grain outsert, and a 2 blade Rage Trypan. Although my bow was shooting extremely fast, I wasn’t shooting the right arrow/broadhead setup to get great penetration on a mature whitetail. With that being learned, I have gone back to a more traditional, heavier arrow with a smaller expandable broadhead. I think at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is where you hit the deer. In this case, I got in too much of a hurry and rushed the shot. Fortunately, I was able to recover the deer and all was well! I hope this answers your questions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, Id love to help in any way. Thanks!
@hagen87452 жыл бұрын
Ethan, you must be shooting Rage expandables. Every deer I have ever shot with a rage looked like that. Make a good cut but seems to never pass through.

Ethan what was your arrow/broadhead setup? Weight of arrow and type of broadhead? Draw weight? And what your plans are going forward to improve the setup. Thanks!
@ethan_stubbs2 жыл бұрын
I have been shooting a 4mm Easton axis with an outsert and a rage trypan. I am definitely going to switch to a smaller cutting diameter like bill advises. I have a 28” draw, and 70lbs
@mztd9122 жыл бұрын
@@ethan_stubbs yea the rage trypans are a very risky head to shoot. If they hit any bone at all, even rib bones, they will drastically reduce penetration like you see on this video. The big wide blades against rib bones deflects the arrow so much that it no longer goes straight in, but more at an angle. So it loses all it's momentum and that's why there's so little penetration.
@ethan_stubbs2 жыл бұрын

How close do you drive in with the electric bike or atv?
@jdmcnugent68082 жыл бұрын
hey Bill I have a question for you. what do you think about whitetails and ATV's? I personally think that on some farms that they are used to them and are not afraid "as long as you don't drive crazy" 2 farms here in Missouri that I hunt are cattle farms and get quite a bit of activity on them from farm equipment, ATV's, etc. I've witnessed deer standing in brush 40 yards away watching me while slowly driving my ATV right by them. I also harvested a mature buck last year 30 min after the land owner drove his side by side with his grand kids all over the pasture right behind my stand. with that being said, I've also noticed that on other farms the deer don't tolerate them at all. I just wanted to know your input on it. by the way.. I absolutely am loving the KZbin episodes this year. I can't wait to see Jordan harvest her first bow buck.. hope all goes well and wishing you and Jordan a great season. thanks Bill. 🏹
@bill-winke2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you JD. On the farm I sold, the neighbor always drove the line fence every day at sunset to check his cattle fence. Sometimes the deer would be out on my side and completely ignore Jim when he drove by at well under 100 yards.

Bill and Staff: Got a question you guys may want to answer in one of your shows: is it worth hunting during a period of extended rain, especially during the rut? In SW WI this weekend we have an 85% chance of rain both Friday and Saturday. Is it worth going out or not??? Or should I just plan on going out right after the rain ends Sunday morning???
@bill-winke2 жыл бұрын
Ryan I think it will be better after the rain ends but given it is the rut I would be out there if your time to hunt is limited. Misty rain is no big deal to a deer, but they don't move in a downpour. Good luck.

Nice buck congrats! Hard to believe that arrow didn't make a complete pass through..what type of broadheads did you shoot?
@bill-winke2 жыл бұрын
He was shooting a Rage. May have hit a rib on entry. 70 pound draw weight.
@PoeOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@bill-winke Hit a rib and deflected with a modern 70# bow? Seriously? Behind the ribs is where the vitals lie, how else can an arrow be expected to hit the cardiovascular system? The TV celebrity hunting industry is in a really bad place, but if that excuse for pathetic penetration is acceptable it’s even worse than I thought. Rage is absolute garbage and should be outlawed in every state.

@@PoeOutdoors I have never shot mechanicals and never will because I've seen so many video's where they dont penetrate and pass through...I only shoot a 60lb bow and my Slick Tricks always blow tight through a deer!

I would be sick waiting 4 hours in those temps with that deer laying out there, especially if he might be gutshot. Nice deer. Lack of penetration and can’t tell from angle of video but did the string hit your coat sleeve or something?

Not sure if it hit anything or not honestly. It was definitely a tough feeling, but I will know next time to settle in and make the best shot possible! Thanks for the comment and good luck this season!

In the final days of my time with Midwest Whitetail Chevy supplied me with a truck to use. When I stopped contributing I had to give it back. I liked it so well I traded my F150 in and bought one.

At the 4:30 mark you were worried about being “parked too close”. I know this goes against EVERYTHING you preach, but I don’t worry about that…..AT ALL! Due to age and health I have to park fairly close to my blind (60 yards). On Oct. 28th I had three deer literally walking around my RTV! Seriously, I thought they were looking inside of it! I will take my chances by parking close to hunt rather than not getting to hunt at all. Last year I killed one of my biggest bucks within sight of my RTV.
@bill-winke2 жыл бұрын
I think there is more for us to learn here but I do think it would be a problem if you park too close in the direction the deer are coming from. You don't want them to see it if at all possible. Blinds may be the exception if your ATV isn't too big. You can possibly park right at the blind.

3.5 hours on a straight up guy shot??Can’t believe Bill allowed a recovery that quickly on such an obviously horrible shot.

It was a liver hit. Four hours is about right for a liver hit in most cases.

What jacket from Code of Silence is Ethan wearing?
@bill-winke Жыл бұрын
I believe it was the Verdigre. That is the lighter weight jacket. I have that one, the Zone 7 and after last season I also got the Coldfjall. So I should be ready whatever the fall brings! Here is a link to that page on the Code of Silence site: codeofsilence.com/collections/jackets-and-tops

Hey Bill, I am new to hunting Illinois in late Oct, any tips for me?
@bill-winke Жыл бұрын
They will be starting to cover more ground then, but still in their normal patterns - that is why late October is so good. I would focus on hunting near bedding areas - mostly mornings, but this can also work in the evenings. You can also hunt near the best food sources in the evenings if you want to spread out. I have had very good hunting during the last few days of October. Good luck.
