Some of these label executives don't want to sign or invest on dark skinned girls in the music industry because they believe these type of women aren't marketable enough to appeal to mainstream audiences (white audience's) the way women who look like Beyonce, or Rihanna (lighter skinned women) In the 90s dark skinned girls were thriving in music, and were the superstars eg. Lauryn hill, Brandy, Foxy brown etc. But even Lauryn hill said she went through colorism in the 90s during music, so this has been going on since But now don't think there has been a dark skinned female superstar for more than a decade to show you that this colorism issue in the industry has gotten worse. Kelly Rowland spoke up about it, Sevyn Streeter, jasmine Sullivan, Dawn Richards and many other dark skinned female artists. Music industry seems to care about how an artist looks, rather than their talent. Matthew Knowles even said it, that his own daughter Beyonce wouldn't have been that successful if she was dark skinned, that record executives wouldn't have seen her as marketable.
