I cut and edited and uploaded this video some years ago! I'm honored that the man himself has use for it. I only edited a little fade in and fade out.

He seems to describe his playing style more like a percussionist than typical drummer. His strokes are very academic, scientific and distinctive.

it was pretty much a life-changing experience for me... I was 17 yrs old when I saw this configuration of KC in 1982 Going in I was sure it was Adrian that was going to hit me the hardest but I came away with a Tony Levin Bill Bruford man crush - they were sublime together beyond comprehension

I remember seeing Crimson 1981 in NYC at The Savoy. Bill, though having a very similar setup as this one, was not playing chordal melody on the Simmons in his solo. Just a year later this was happening. And when I saw Crimson at Stony Brook University on Long Island same thing. By the time I caught Bill years later with ABWH, the chordal melody was full blown. And on the Union tour, he had pads up the wall. Bill, a musician's musician who took the Max Roach Drum philosophy to another level.

Already 40 years , I was there . King Crimson was the opening act of Roxy Music. I must have some photos somewhere. The place is really nice for a concert, not to big not to small. The night was incredible. The Roxy Music concert can be found on DVD, perhaps the King Crimson too. The BBC was there filming,I was just behind a cameraman on the left side . Que de bons souvenirs.😃

My first time seeing KC was summer of '82 - at Merriweather Post Pavilion - IMO - 'Sartori In Tangier' from the 1982 Beat record might be the best thing that 80's lineup ever recorded - Bill really killed it on that one. Cheers.

You can hear Waiting Man subtly creeping on here too... and it's saying something that at this point Bill dealt alternately with snare and maybe one or two other drums at any one time in a phrase. Often I've noticed with another pad or octo or Roto or bell serving as the ride cymbal role. Clever.

The Supraphonic has some role as well. But, yes. This is not a speed demonstration of rudiments. Skills, yes. But rhythm, variety, groove, and music. Steve Gadd is another "spaces" soloist. As a drummer, I generally dislike drum solos.

@@g.e.5723 When I bought my first Tama kit in 1988, the guy also gave me a VCR tape with Zildjian Day in New York on it. Solos from Vinnie Colauita, Alex Acuna, Billy Cobham, and Steve Gadd. Steve was different, and by far the funkiest. I was a rock kid, so I thought Cobham was the coolest, at the time. We learn... The tape also had a Tommy Aldridge clinic on it. Teaching the solo he'd been playing for 15 years already. And still plays, by rote, 35 years later......yawn....

I think a certain Dutch/Los Angelino drummer paid close attention to this solo from about 2:29 on. Or those Simmons sounds inspired more than one guy to make Harley sounds with their kit.

@gowensbach29982 жыл бұрын
I know! There have been a lot of weird mashups with certain bands opening to the main band...that didn't fit well together. The worst mashup I remember was Gentle Giant opening before Peter Frampton! The Frampton fans booed Gentle Giant, because they didn't understand the music, but I was there for GG . What a disaster! At any rate, it seemed GG played all their most challenging pieces too...I think on purpose....Nevertheless, I felt Frampton was super boring...and also, do not mean him disrespect.
@chrisjazzhands53732 жыл бұрын
I’m sure there were many, many mutual fans of both bands. John Wetton played w Roxy, Eno was their first keyboardist, Bryan Ferry’s big break was trying out as King Crimson’s vocalist, Pete Sinfield produced Roxy’s first album, etc.

With this level of creativity for so long, I understand the burnout. Hope you come back, but you've done more than enough. Brilliant stuff. Thank you.
