I’ve always had an issue with the term “Pokémon-clone”, because we have this other word in the English language called “genre” that’s more fitting. It’s like insisting every SHMUP is a Galaga-clone or that every FPS is a Wolfenstein-clone.

Pokemon genre is rpg, that's an too vague genre to compare two games similar in many ways. Sure it's exist the sub genres Action rpg, turn based rpg, tatical rpg, and stuff, but not for pokemon type of game. I mean, suppose that the genre metroidivania never had come to be a word, then when people see an metroidivania, they would just call it an Symphony of the Night clone.

personally i love the game, while you can play and battle with your pokemon/digimon anytime in their game, Monsters in Monster Rancher pass away, this made me feel connected. My best monster was a Hare-Golem fusion, he was the first monster that can get me through the tournament ranks, i spent A LOT of time raising him until the notice he's getting old came(i haven't realized they can grow old and die), i felt really sad and saved days before he passed away, and made another one after he does, i tried raising another monster but it was never the same. A few times after that i still come back and play the saving i made when my Hare-Golem is still alive, only several days before his death, i play the saving over and over again just to spend time with him. And it doesn't help that you get a cutscene when your monster pass away, it was very sad.

My 1st monster rancher game was Advance 2 for Gameboy Advance. And my favorite monster was off course the starter Garu (Blaze) and I loved that little guys so much. We made it all the way to Gold Rank tournament before he died and I was devastated. So while with pokemon you can build a battle team that will never die on you, on Rancher you have to cherish and plan every day with your monster because you don't know when they'll crook and leave you heart broke. And to Blaze up their in Rancher Heaven thank you. You were he best starter a young Rancher could ever ask for. Although after Blaze's death I was so upset I scoured through all my collected content up to that point and frozen monsters trying to make something that could curb stomp the game. Imagine my surprise when I accidently create Ragnarok. And when I asked about it online people are either sayin 5c3rw me or ask me what combo of monsters I used. Only to later surprise find out he was the final boss of 3 and was OP as hell. Revenge is a dished best serve APOCTOLIPTIC!!

Monster Rancher anime's plot is surprisingly dark and mature
@3amhellbeast3 жыл бұрын
I've been rewatching it and... Yeah. There are some parts where I'm actually very impressed with how dark it got or how heavy the themes were (and a lot which are really important for kids too! Like how to handle loss and death, that even though someone who was really bad and awful before doesn't mean that they can't change and be a better person especially if they were awful and bad due to mental and emotional manipulation, just because someone makes a mistake doesn't mean that they are automatically a bad person and shouldn't be trusted anymore, loss of a pet or loved one, how stooping down to someone else's level who did something bad to you and doing the same thing to them makes you just as bad as them, ect). There's so many good morals in that show and if I ever have kids I'll probably watch it with them because it does a great job of explaining these hard topics to kids and I know that it really helped and shaped me as a kid too.

It goes this way with about everything even though nothing is actually original nowadays. You could do enough research and found that before the most popular (Y) there was “Z” that was very similar, but no one cares about that. The whole clone idea spreads because the fanbase religiously defends their favorite and other people just find it funny and go along with it. It’s all very ridiculous, but the world we live in

@TheArcSet5 жыл бұрын
Personally I'm still surprised that they decided to talk about slavery and have some 'villains' that were opposed to the protagonists, not because they were evil, but because they thought that the humans were evil; that and the whole shift when they find out that the Phoenix can't raise the dead and un-brainwash the 'baddies', that were voluntarily in the army, that it was pretty much just the ancient nuke the destroyed the world and ended the old war. It was very goofy, but surprisingly ambitious in it's main plot.
@SuperFireDagwon5 жыл бұрын
Outside Digimon, Monster Rancher was one of my favorite series at the time. The characters had real personalities and you became a lot more invested in their adventure and goals than anything I ever saw in Pokémon. Pixie's turn from Baddie to the side of good isn't the storytelling arc of legends, but it was fairly believable and her interaction with Genki and the rest was fairly believable. (spoiler) I'm remembering a lot of this from memory, but in the episode Blue Skies Genki does return home and he does return in episode 49 (which is here on YT). There's a lot to like about Monster Rancher and even if most of the target audience has well moved on, it's still a fun show and-to me-a much better storytelling experience than anything Pokémon ever did.

MR2 is my favorite ps1 game of all time. The music hits me with nostalgia so hard now. The level of strategy that eventually goes into raising a monster up to S class and beyond and unlocking new types of monsters and ranch upgrades and all the discoveries you could make on errantry missions... I remember Monster Rancher. Even watched all the Episodes when it used to show on Fox Kids back in the day; years and years ago. I still have the old PS1 Monster Rancher Game somewhere in my collection. As for calling it a "Clone" of Pokemon, I don't believe so. You Scan Discs to get Monsters from them (PS1 Vers, not sure others). You can Fuse Monsters together to get stronger/stranger combinations. You Raise them, Feed them, Train them, until the very end when they pass away (Very Similar to Digimon, rather than Pokemon). Pokemon focuses more on "Animals (Real or Myth) and Items (Non-sentient Objects)", while Monster Rancher focuses on actual Monsters you would come across in any RPG Fantasy Game (Wolves, Golems, Succubus, Slimes, Devils, Phoenixes, etc). If I can give my opinion, I find that it relates closer to Digimon; rather than Pokemon. And while Digimon has been called a "cousin/clone" of Pokemon, it still has its differences; the same with Monster Rancher itself.

@@Kingmegadon Actually Monster Farm DS 2 did get a western release in 2010. Monster Farm DS 2 is actually our Monster Rancher DS. The first Monster Rancher DS never came out in the west. Doesn't bother me much though because 2 is the superior version. However, the western version of 2 has some monsters that are near impossible to get. (like five) and trying to enter kanji in the magic spell for the only one you can obtain (General Death), will freeze the game. (you'll have to use an action replay to get general death or find a password in english that works) As for the other 4 there is no known way to obtain them. It's also been assumed that their data was completely removed. Two of the four are indeed missing descriptions in the US version.

oh and the anime, i think it was actually better than at least Pokemon, as for he never gets back to the real world, i'm pretty sure he did, but he went back to the Monster world but i can't remember what his motives are(probably along the line of "protecting muh monsters"). the Monster Rancher anime is a lot darker than its counterpart, there are stakes, the villain monsters are actually out there to hunt down and kill the protagonists, and Genkis team are pretty weak(mochi and suezo) before Tiger and the others came, so it was really a "survival" anime. and it actually have some "life lessons" in it too, Tiger losing his brother to Moo, Golem being forced to fight and finally found his own reason to fight, and why Hare is the character he is. And somehow Tiger and Hares relationship reminds me a lot of Zoro-Sanji from One Piece(not sure which one came first).

@davidm28255 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was sad that it got about 3 seconds of video time here. Battle Card II is actually really fun, and I think the GUTS system is really cool. I respect that they made their own game rather than just trying to clone an existing card game, whether that was out of ambition or necessity. Also, when you get to that halfway mark when monsters can start fusing, it's fucking DOPE. 10 year old me was like "welp, guess the game is done," but then you find out you have another half of the game to enjoy.
