She said most of her inspiration for this album was from Julie London!! She’s describing her relationship with her ex and the lyrics fits perfectly. If you haven’t watched her documentary, they show her relationship with him and how he treated her throughout it. I’m going to her show in Sept and I said the same thing, if she takes Ocean Eyes off the set list I’m going to be upset but I’m pretty sure she won’t just bc it’s her first song and she’s always sang it. I had barricades/front row views of the stage and saw Billie perform this song live at Austin City Limits music festival which was her closing song and holy shittt!! I’ve seen Green Day perform Jesus of suburbia 3 times live in person during their American idiot, 21st century breakdown and hella mega tour shows and even that doesn’t quite compare to the emotion and power this song delivers when performed live! I highly recommend anyone out there if you can get the chance to see Billie live next year in 2022, please do! You will not regret it at all. I waited at ACL for 12 hours in the sun (mainly since she was the headliner) and I don’t regret a single second of it at all haha Oh yeah she also did play ocean eyes 😂 don’t worry she will always have that on the setlist especially since that’s the song that started it all and made her famous

To me the beginning is like a state of pretend, one common when people are in such toxic relationships yet are so beat down that they feel they can’t leave. It’s pretending to be okay, pretending it’s all fine when I’m reality you’re in so much pain. You physically can’t handle it so you fake it and that’s what I feel the room represents, seeing as how she has all the wishful thinking of “do you think of me, do you still care about me”. Then she starts breaking inside and that’s when the room starts to fall apart, the facade shattering and she’s left with this suffocating feeling. The water pours in and she can’t breath, struggling to find the surface. This is a perfect representation of what it feels like to be plunged into all this pain and suffering, everything catching up to you from all those years of pretend. Eventually she reaches the surface and it’s here she starts to smile. It’s here that she realizes that it’s not her fault and that she should be angry at him for everything he’s done to her. HE chose to make her suffer and turning it around and making himself the victim was never fair. It’s that anger and betrayal and “you’ll never hurt me again because 𝐼 said so” and taking back your life. Here you can see her scream and laugh and smile, feeling the rain on her skin and just that feeling of being ALIVE, of being HAPPY. It’s so beautiful and I could go into serious detail about all the hidden meanings in the sets and the storytelling, especially as someone who’s been there. One of the best songs she’s ever put out hands down and that’s saying a lot
