She directed this video. She started directing all of them herself several years ago and she leaves several seconds of blank screen at the end so KZbin ads don’t cover up her work. Early in her career, before she directed the videos herself, she would draw storyboards and develop specific camera angles and color schemes that she wanted and would go over all of it with the director.

You’re welcome. I forgot to mention that she hates using CGI / green screen unless it’s absolutely necessary. Her videos are really top tier and basically works of art. If you’re looking to study music videos in this way, I would suggest more of hers.

She has been doing it since she was 15 she has always directed and edited, (bellyache too) only that as a minor she always had to have a director and still could not put her name .. but the set of bury a friend she drew it in her diary at 15/16 years old, all ideas come from her, Bad guy she edited the video at 16 Etc she does everything! She is the mind of her art.

for the lights, I think it's because this song is partly inspired by a dream. In dreams, things aren't always "right." Her biggest fear is drowning, so she finally jumps into the water as exhausted by the situation. But the song is called happier than ever because after this toxic relationship she felt free and happier than ever

This music video is so symbolic and creative. My take on this is when the water started dripping, that's when she started to realize that she's in a toxic space. When she's swimming through the water, that's her trying to get out of the situation. And when she's on the rooftop, she is free from the situation and in control.

I’d be very interested in your opinions on several of her other videos such as When the Party’s Over, Everything I Wanted, Bury A Friend, Your Power, etc. As mentioned, she writes and directs all of her videos. Interesting fact- Billie has synesthesia, so every song she does has a distinct color, flavor, and vision, so her videos are based of off that. She had an art exhibit once where you walked through different rooms, and every individual room represented each one of her songs and the different overlapping senses she herself experienced for them.

she is talking about her life even if it’s for Barbie movie she said she wrote about herself, and the rain / the mess are after her Grammy 2020 outfit (year when she made history) .. when everyone started hating her (bc of her huge success) .. it was a chaos in her life after that … she no longer knew what to do.. etc … I’m crying .. this is so simple, minimal like Billie music, but as usual so deep and beautiful .. I love billie, she is special, it’s bringing music and entertainment back to how it was in the last century in movies, comedies Etc simple but with meaning, it brings back simplicity to make you focus more on details and emotion .. try to convey that empathy lost over the years since when the party’s over … what an artist . . people are blind to what she is doing bc apparently they don't have enough sensitivity to understand .. it would be easy to take a director and do everything like the others, so huge and big and always the same stuff.. instead she has a very precise idea and she wants to do her own thing and art .. I respect so much Billie!! SHE IS AN ARTIST! She has so much potential and talents .. 👏🏻

My guess about why they took so long to find her in the shot is this....When she sings, often it's so very soft that you have to strain to hear her (not so much in this song but especially in the beginning of her career...Party's Over is one where she does this). Anyway I think the long shot was for the same thing...to make you absolutely STRAIN to follow her movement like you have to strain to hear her. It pulls you in and keeps you hyper focused. What do you think? Possible?

i always felt that the long shot of the wall in the beginning was to create a sense of uneasiness in the viewer. on my first watch that shot was my first inclination that “something” was going to happen in the video :)

The room and it’s color is a specific symbolism to “rose colored glasses” and the water flooding into what she though what pristine, perfect, and light space. The water is toxicity and all the awful things in the relationship she may have made excuses for. The lights started flickering around the room is her doubts making her untrusting or uneasy.

i think my only criticism of the mv is that the light coming through the windows stayed pretty constant up until the door is opened. if it darkened over the 10-20 seconds prior, when the water began dripping, it would have seemed more ominous. but maybe i'm overthinking it because there's also a dream-like quality to the mv and dreams, at least my dreams, tend to put unusual things and people in the wrong settings and times. billie is inspired by dreaming. thanks for taking the time to react to this. i've seen maybe a hundred reactions to this, but i always like the ones by people in the trades the most. the professional analysis. peace.

my personal take is that because Billie said the water in this music video is a symbol for abuse and toxicity, that the door opening and letting all the water in completely destroyed any light source (even the sunlight) immediately. just like how abuse in a toxic relationship can suck all the joy out of you in an instant!
