11:40 haha I am a producer myself. I use this technique a lot. He added the low voice there to distract from the harsh cut they made on the vocals (when billie sang mind slightly out of tune) so the deep voice hides it. Basically, you add stuff to cover the imperfections that's how it is when you don't have a professional studio. So it is not random, just smart :)

he was 19 and this was actually a song that Finneas wrote for his band and himself but then he thought Billie would sound better in it. So they recorded for her voice and obviously used it for her dance class, but just for fun uploaded it onto SoundCloud. They didn't think though that all this would've happened.

This was such an amazing eye opener, I have been crying myself to sleep for years because I thought my 20-30 track DAW projects would never, ever, EVER be worthy of releasing. I used to hear tales of artists fitting in hundreds of tracks and that was what was necessary to make hit music, that plus all kinds of expensive hardware. This breakdown shattered all my beliefs and gave me hope that maybe one day, I too can strike gold, as long as I just keep at it! MUCH THANKS, keep doing what you do because it's great!!

I used to think the exact same thing. The first few songs I put out had a TON of tracks but the more music I make I realized more does not equal better! Sometimes less is more!;)

I can relate to this. In the beginning I was making 10-15 tracks - wich sounded bad. As I progressed through couple of years, i found myself having 60-120 tracks. Was starting to sound decent. Then I started to choose sounds wisely, and stacking things. solid recordings (do it right at the source, don't fix it in the mix sorta thing..) went back to the 10-15 track songs i made and "enhanced" my sounds. NIGHT and DAY! Thing is, my melodies were actually somewhat catchy, just needed the right sounds ;)
@PADsoundtrack
@PADsoundtrack 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how arranged and composed is the song you're working on. Sometimes, it's like a call the song make : it needs more details, more things that people will hear but not listen, and you add more tracks, sometimes 200 of it. And sometimes, like this song, you just need a few and the feeling is complete. The important thing it's to be sincere, and to trust yourself 👌😊

My hip hop/trap beats usually cap off around 11 to 17 tracks. And my more house stuff is about 25 to 40 tracks. I started out a few months ago but I still think those songs hold up. As lomg as you capture a vibe in your music, it has the potential to be really good, even if it only has like 5 tracks :)

no ones probably ever gonna see this but, for any song, if you're curious to hear some backing vocals the easiest thing to do is listen to the song with an auxiliary cord. Get the cord where the audio jack is and very slightly pull the wire out but not where its out of the hole completely. If you get it right you'll be able to hear the background music and some vocals. I'm pretty sure people have done this already but I recently found out about it. but yeah i thought it was cool. anyways thanks for taking the time to read this if you ever do🥰

All you’re doing is playing the L and R at the same time, anything that is toward the centre of the mix is being removed by phase cancellation. You can do the same thing in logic, import two instances of the same piece of audio on separate tracks and invert the polarity of one and you will hear a cancellation.

This is a perfect example of the back and forth struggle with control in music. Once upon a time it took millions ie; great gear, great rooms, best musicians and trained engineers to make a record. We can also slide “ who you know “ in that equation. When the four track came along people heavily invested in gear played it down. However outside those million dollar studios it was used to create great records. With computers and modern day technology people have been doing this for years with just one piece of out board gear even a primitive sound blaster card, emu stuff etc. Take note the people who invest heavily in tech for music will downplay the bedroom artist and try to tell you about standing waves etc and why you need a good vocal booth. However, lately there has been quite a few gear and tech to combat that issue. However on the flip side this technology has promoted smartphones as a good medium to listen music on. Also most young people are realizing they don’t have to be Barbara Streisand just gimmick it in software. If ever doing a live performance lip sync certain portions. If this is what young people want let them have it they are the future. The only sad part is that songs that create perfect singing and unnatural tones tend to not have long staying power or wind up with the sound of the ‘80s stigma. In the end who cares as long as it sells right. So what is my point? It is not gear but talent and ideas. Billie sounds very good in her natural voice better than many famous singers. There is no need to worry about perfect pitch and tone. She is not a piano tuned perfectly. Why are so many engineers obsessed with this being the litmus test? Sing the flipping song with good production techniques. I am still waiting to hear the person who can sing live for 3 minutes and maintain perfect pitch. I have seen so many artists who performed live, rocked the crowd, loved in their neck of the woods by people outside of friends and family. Only to leave the bedroom producer and get told they are too pitchy blah , blah , blah. We need to bring in this vocal coach, this other one and that other one. One year later still on the chorus of a song previously recorded that was gaining traction. We should let the young people buying these records be the experts

Some things that jump out. 1. Billie is an excellent song writer and arranger. A huge part of the succes of the music is her, the production is def secondary, designed to stay out of the way 2. Her soft, stripped down style allows them to get away with really usable recordings in an untreated room. The louder the artist tends to sing or perform, the more room sound you get. 3. The production sounds pretty different from the final mix on the radio. I def feel like the mixing engineer layered the drums in particular, and did some work on the pads and stuff to make em more exciting which we don't hear in this session 4. There's no autotune on the session and she likely doesn't need much, HOWEVER the mixing engineer would be using melodyne to really tighten up any performance issues. 5. I also wouldn't put too much stock in any of the processing here for the same reason. The mix engineer would change a lot of this. 6. Using multiple compressors is a pretty common technique. It's prob made most famous by Michael Brower. I prob use 4-5 compressors on my vocals. 7. That said there's a lot of great stuff to learn here and very interesting to see it all stripped down. It's pretty expected ultimately but for a beginner it's great stuff

I can't get enough of these kinds of videos. I just love the production process of artists - I find it truly fascinating and inspiring. It makes them seem more human to me - like, we're all kinda using the same gear, trying to make art. We all have out own process but with very different outcomes. Music is life!

You use individual reverbs on tracks to get different vibes and to thicken the stereo field. Then you put all tracks through a single bus reverb to weld all the tracks together as they all then get a touch of the same processing.

Hello. Reason to bus most channels to more reverb busses is to set the space for the whole track. When you reverb individual tracks its more about the instrument flavour and/or position in the mix. Good breakdown. Really like Finneas, so please do more of these if possible. Thank you :)

I don't think so! I've definitely heard singers who can do that and sound autotuned in real life... she has enough control that I think she could singer a lil run like that... it's fascinating and frustrating :P even the lil "(know how to make me) CRY" ornament takes some agility to hit cleanly
@HopefulPop
@HopefulPop 4 жыл бұрын
@@jd3563 i hear ya - i think they honestly curated and recreated a lot in this template for logic. it's not the original session in other regards, so it's definitely possible there's some tuning from a non logic plug-in that the bounced into takes... who knows :) also - i tried to make a song out of this template and it was SOOO buggy lol i gave up!!

The best thing to learn here is that there are no standard approaches when you are creating. The part where you talk about how why there is a reverb bus of the vocal when it already has a reverb on actual track proves that there are no "best way to a use things " or needs to be done in a certain way as long as the final result is a great one.
@forestcochran4196
@forestcochran4196 4 жыл бұрын
I think the number of takes is also very remarkable. Some of the earlier takes aren't even that badly out of tune, but Billie knows she can do better so she does it 30 more times until it's *just right.* Also, bussing your effects to another track is a fairly common production technique. There are a lot of reasons for doing it but it COULD be that he did it here so that you hear the effect in the space between the vocal lines rather than the delay or the reverb stepping on the line. That's just a guess though.
