She, made the statement, that if I, have to sing and sound like someone else, then I, don't want to sing at all!!!. She, created her own style on stage and of..people can try to imitate her..But there is only one Lady-Day."RIP"..Precious Beautiful One..~~~

Hello 👋 Marilyn How are you doing today

Thank you so much for this channel. I started listening to Billie Holiday when I was 18 years old and I'm now older than I care to acknowledge. I mention that because at that time the only film footage of Billie Holiday that I saw was of Fine and Mellow and Don't Explain. It wasn't easy to find recordings of her either. There were compilations but nothing compared to what you've been so great to put together and share so generously. Recently I heard an interview with Rickie Lee Jones and she talked about the way people focus too much on female artists addictions and romanticize their problems. She said it in a more nuanced way because Rickie has a way with words . But I realized that even though I loved Billie Holiday and Anita O'Day and Rickie Lee Jones too, I'd not given them enough credit for their musical genius. In other words Billie's phrasing had nothing to do with heroin. She knew exactly what she was doing and was an absolute genius of jazz. She influenced a whole generation of singers. Helen Merrill was clearly and unashamedly emulating Billie Holiday throughout her career. June Christy, Carmen McCrea as well made musical choices informed by Billie Holiday's style. I'm not saying they were imitations but everyone wanted to sing like Billie Holiday. Ella and Sarah Vaughn started singing Holiday's songs later in their own careers, I mean the ones most identified with Billie Holiday, so even they had a deep love and respect for this woman. And it doesn't end with that generation. Catherine Russell sings Swing it Brother Swing one of my favorites. It's remarkable how much this beautiful woman influenced music. I've heard opera sopranos with the most pristine coloratura voices asked who they admire most as a singer and they answer Billie Holiday.

I can speak for one of Billies musicians.....An all girl tri accompanied her on this major European Jazz tour. My Mother was the drummer She was young and upcoming and a trailblazer in the area of female jazz drummers. The trio was the Beryl Booker trio. Beryl on piano, Bonnie Wetzal on bass and my mother Elaine Leighton on drums. Hope this helps answer your question😊

@@jonldnmy pleasure. It's probably still on the Internet if you Google Beryl Booker trio or USA European Jazz Tour. They visited several countries. There were other headliners and back up musicians I believe producer Leonard Feather put it together. I was six years old and of course missed my mother Are you a musician??? Also some of these recordings are on the "Lady Day" CD. My mother is on several selections. Thanks so much for your interest and reply 😊

In november 1958 - when she only came to Italy & France , the audience in Milan didn't react well to her singing ... and in Paris-France they even told her to stop singing ( that happened at the OLYMPIA ... where she had a signed contract , btw ) . She was there together wit my buddy Mal Waldron (piano ) ...

Ironically i like the music of Billy Holliday but sung in the film lady sings the blues by Diana Ross with her as Billy Holliday the way she sang it whereas in reality the real Billy Holliday sang like she was dying
