This disincentives normal small donors & have them question whether their donations are respected at all when they are overshadowed by big mega donors. This could cause a spiral effect if the small donors find it futile to donate so they stop donating, which makes politicians depend on big mega donors even more.

A democracy assumes that all votes are equal, therefore everyone has relatively equal political influence. There will celebrities and community leaders with louder voices - but that's different than having some big donor like Sheldon Adelson that gets to sit on some real-estate property - made a ton of money and use that money to influence politicians and pay for campaigns that may not be in the best interest of society. Pandering to big whale donors (while having a first-past-the-post electoral system that limits general elections to 2 parties) is definitely a serious thorn in the idea of a democracy.

We should amend the constitution to prohibit money in politics like this. Make it public funded. This is great since the fire will be pointed to EVERY state legislature to ratify it and IF they DO NOT, the people will be UP IN ARMS about it.
