You guys requested more training! Hopefully she’ll return to being less reactive about her ears soon.

Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 13 years old, her favorite word is mad.

At our old apartment we had some blinds the cats had tore up in the second bedroom and the female cat we had at the time, who was much tinier than the female we have now, somehow got herself tangled in them and woke us up screaming bloody murder. It was the most nerve wracking experience, between her waking us up and trying to cut her out of them. Of course she wanted to wiggle and flail instead of holding still. I had to scruff her and cradle her to keep her calm so we didn't injure her. 🤦🏻‍♀️Cats.

@@rokelle_2012 I always knew about the risk of strangulation in blinds when it comes to little kids... never really thought about cats, lol... although I do know cats with collars run the potential risk of hanging themselves (or just getting stuck) because the collar can get hung up on branches, fences, etc.

@@Nirrrina Oh, cool, I didn't know that, good to know! Well, they didn't used to be. We almost lost a cat once, when he got hung up on a wrought iron porch roof support (luckily we heard him yowling), but that was back in 1972. I know of a couple other similar incidents that happened years after that too, but even those were a good many years ago now. Also, back then everyone used flea collars (because the topical stuff like Frontline didn't exist), which didn't break away either... do they now? Pretty sure they still exist, even though most people don't use them anymore.

Yeah that was like teaching my rescue kitty who is five years old to let me clip her nails myself. Started with rewarding her for letting me play with her toes. Then rewarding her for letting me clip one nail. Now she sees the bowls of treats and the clippers and she starts to purr. Lol. But I’ve had her a little over a year so it didn’t come all at once but that was one of the first things I taught her. She was pretty jumpy so it took building her confidence and comfort level. She didn’t even like to be petted or scratched back then except a couple places. Her chin and her pits, interestingly enough.

I don't blame her! I remember getting drops of some sort of oil when I had earaches as a kid. Mom would have me lay my head in her lap and she'd use a couple toothpicks to get the oil out of the bottle and drop them in. It tickled going in and felt really *off* while in, so I often flinched, getting bits of oil on the outer part of my ear and making the whole ordeal last longer. Then Mom would stuff cotton balls in my ears to keep the oil from dribbling out.

If they're food oriented it might go well. My cat only likes maybe three small treats in one session and then gets disinterested in whatever training we were doing. Despite this he managed to learn a few "tricks", like jumping up on something when I say "up" and going in the direction of where I point. But it really limited the amount of button training time I could do. And also, my cat is super gentle, so he literally could not figure out how to step on the button. I got him to touch the button to get a treat, but that was it. Good luck with your kitties though!

What About Bunny made me aware that, as a rule, we totally invade or pets bodies out of necessity. It never dawned on me that it was possible to give pets a CHOICE about maintenance stuff 🤯🤯🤯 Giving them the ability to DENY being messed with never crossed my mind. With the rite training, we can give them agency over their own bodies & maintenance/medical needs can b met with their CONSENT. MUCH EASIER 🙄 than fighting with them. I'm very curious how serious medical care goes between these 2 🤔 ie, needles or oral medicine...

I call it "brain itch"... that itch deep inside the ear. I KNOW it's the ear, but its so deep it's like its in my brain. HATE IT, cus I've tried numerous methods over the years. I can't imagine ... wait, maybe I can (YIKES!), being a creature with that itch. No tools to help. Requiring a human's help for an area that is super sensitive and anything done near it is also super loud. Bless you, Billi. I get it - I understand. And your mom does, too. She also knows how to help and it may seem a bit stressful at first with desensitization of touch (even with yummy treats), but it'll be worth it in the long run. Before long you'll press "Ear Now" and present your ear for mom to look and take care of the annoying itch! You two make a great team. I know you help your mom in ways that we don't get to see, and same for her helping you. You two are the BEST.

My cat complains when we do things like take care of his claws, clean his ears, etc., but gently restraining him and soothing him helps him to relax. We’re always normalizing touching him where he’s uncomfortable- which also means not pushing him too far. He knows the phrase “Let Mommy look.” He will over scratch around his ears, cutting himself and getting minor infections if we don’t keep up with it, which in turn means he has to have disinfectant treatments. He has made it clear that although he doesn’t like these things, he knows we’re trying to help. I love how Billie trusts you enough to tell you when something is wrong and how you train him to be more comfortable with you helping.

This might sound weird, but I also watch a dolphin research program on KZbin. And the fact that you added ear touches to her training sessions reminded me of the way that they add some things to their training/enrichment sessions to help with basic medical checks.

I was raised with a pack of five poodles and hair would grow in the ears and the ears would get really stuffed up and mom took em to the vet and they would pull the hair out of the dogs ears and then there was a special ear drop the Vet sent us home with to put in the dogs ears because having all that hair in there was like an ear infection in a child. Remember how painful ear infections are? Yeah. BUt hair in animal ear canal's is a thing.

Billi is so food-oriented! That must make training at least a little easier. There are probably cats out there who are just as smart as Billi but can't be trained with treats as easily. My cat only likes a few treats at a time, if any, so training with him is slow-going.
@KKIcons
@KKIcons 2 жыл бұрын
Do you only feed at regular times and careful not to overfeed? That's how some animals can be trained just with part of their daily portion. I have a rescue animal that's very skittish about training so I am using Blue Wilderness treats mixed in the kibble to make it more worth it for them.
@Jupiter-T
@Jupiter-T 2 жыл бұрын
@@KKIcons Yeah we only give him a small portion to "free feed" on during the day. Then small portions of wet food at meals. Maybe he just doesn't like those treats.

Those annoyed mrehs at the start... Mother, I just scratched my ear in front of you and you still didn't get it! Worst servant of the day! 😂 Mine have learned that if they come to me with one ear down, I'll 'fix' it for them. Right now there's less choice involved than Billi has, but once Parsley has his buttons... the human shall be Ordered Around!

Noise Complaint + Sensitive Ears = Vet? I did scroll down quite far in the comments and didn't see this mentioned. I also know that you are the absolute best Meowmy. But I'll sleep better knowing I at least put it out there. You've also given me an idea how to better deal with a persistent matt one of my girls has. We've almost got it out but I need to condition her to daily combing from now on. I've never had to train for this before. All my other cats followed me into the bathroom for the "getting ready for work routine". Their treat for staying out of my way was my undivided attention and a good combing or brushing before I left the room. Until the current matt issue, I hadn't realized that neither of the two current cats comes to the catwalk counter for attention. Probably because being retired now there's not a more extensive "getting ready" routine.

Please help! I've started teaching my cat to speak and her first word is "pets". The problem is, I'm about 7 weeks into training and she has only stepped on the button once. Instead, she opts to head-butt it. She knows the word now and uses her button, but she just walks up and head-butts it instead of stepping on it. I'm convinced the one time she DID step on it might have been an accident. What should I do?
