A quick recap because there’s been a number of changes!
Billi and I have moved out west, I’ll be traveling frequently for work so we won’t have a “settled home” for a bit. Dad will visit when he can.
Since I won’t have a home base for a while I am staying with my sister, and Billi will have to put up with her “cousins” Daphne (dog) and Guppy (cat). Yes, Billi is mad 🤷🏼‍♀️
These three have lived together and visited each other before, but Billi is still an “only child” at heart and has never truly enjoyed her time with them. That may be because Guppy started their relationship by treating Billi’s tail as a toy 😹
So imagine my surprise when Billi actually started making overtures towards Guppy! They may never be friends, but I’ll take what I can get 😂

Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 14 years old, her favorite word is mad.
Inspiration for learning to “speak” with buttons from Hunger4Words (check her out on IG).

I had 3 cats and it was love hate relationship. I always let my cats have some aggressive fights or arguments but not to the point of drawing blood. Animals HAVE TO FIGHT to some extent so they can save themselves. If 2 “hateful” cats just slap each other and we stop them every time….what if they learn not to fight for themselves and a car actually hurt them so bad because the owner trained their cat to be nice? I’m not being mean but that’s how I see it. I let my cats argue and hiss and scratch each other (they know their limits under the same roof). As people we argue with another person. What if a husband and wife or siblings argue and there’s a referee that butts in at the slightest word or raised voice…”stop arguing no!” Wouldn’t it be annoying? Just let people and animals work it out.

@@isabellepoynter5193 The difference here is that your cats had to live together and these two don’t. Plus Billy is not an outdoor cat (as far as I know), so these ‘survival skills’ aren’t needed. I also had two cats who had to learn the whole ‘how to interact and deal with each other’-thing. My cats didn’t come to live with us at the same moment and there also was an age difference of roughly one year. And then there was the huge difference in personality! Puck, the older one, is a calm and thoughtful soul, who loves his peace and quiet and prefers to simply lay in the sun and chill. He had our home to himself for about a year, but when he was a little over 16 months old: Enter JIP! And Jip was not only the young boy of just 3 months old, but this was a whole different ball game! He was (and is to this day!) the embodiment of rascality! The days of peace and quietness where gone for Puck… because now there wasn’t ‘just’ a kitten in the house, not ‘just’ a playful kitten in the house, but now there was a kitten with ADHD, filled up with at least a gallon of Red Bull! And Puck did not know how to deal with that. It was heartbreaking sometimes. Jip never acted out of meanness or viciousness, but he sure tested how far he could take his teasing. He would be on the table and Puck would be walking by on the floor, unsuspecting of what was looming above him and before he knew what happened, Jip would land BAM on top of him, just for the fun of it. At first Puck became a bit nervous and even a little scared, but it somehow never occurred to him that he too could lash out every now and then, to make a stand. But we left it and did not interfere: he HAD to learn this himself. So when the day FINALLY arrived, after about 4 or 5 months, that he DID give Jip a huge swing on his little rascally head, we applauded him! (And you have never seen a cat with such a surprised look on his face as Jip had at that moment…. And Jip knew straight away that his gig was up.) Of course he did tease (just wants to play, but our Diva Puck ‘doesn’t do playing’) but now if Puck had enough, he had the choice to either walk away or show Jip that in the end he is still the older one and yes, Puck IS boss… They DO love each other to and love to snuggle up together too! So: You see I completely share your thoughts on letting them deal with their own things, but not when they are just visiting…

@@isabellepoynter5193 I have been doing tnr and rescue for a decade. I currently have 19 unadoptables from age 1 - 11. I love them all. Here's the thing. Some territorial aggression is expected in the beginning, and even some grumpy days.. However when animals are left unchecked in their aggression, they can quickly turn into bullies with a target. The target will become so afraid of being attacked that it will eventually stop using a litter box and begin to "go" wherever they are hiding. They will spend their time hiding.That's no life for a cat. It can take months or years to undo that kind anxiety and insecurity in a cat. Usually those animals are dumped or worse because the owners didn't know what to do. I've seen it over and again. Mine will nip each other's ears and occasionally have a mild spar but scratches and wounds from fighting can easily turn into abscessed wounds or damaged eyes that are not only painful but can cause disability.

In the hierarchy of emotionally aware beings, that's quite a step to take. Seeing that others are like self, and go through emotions. They're not just annoying external factors to be bullied into feeding and grooming us in the exact right way and at the exact right time. Mila the cat can communicate through buttons that her sibling needs to go potty. How the dogs tell each other...might be the subtle imaging method used by animal communicators.

With cats, body language is what actually starts it, not the chase. Billi didn't actually start it...certainly did the more obvious step to *humans*, but not what would actually instigate a fight for cats (been there many times). Looks like Guppy did that (which isn't unexpected, given that it was new territory for her.) But still - not really fair to say Billi started it. Also, I doubt Guppy is 14 yrs old like Billi...glad they're getting along ok now, but I hope Billi is still getting her own uninterrupted space and territory.

I've found that cats can be incredibly petty and passive aggressive lol. Our youngest male, about a year and a half old at the time, was basically my 10 year old gal's stalker when they lived together. He'd never attack her, he'd never even touch her, but he was _always_ skulking nearby watching her, constantly stealing her sleeping/sitting spots if she got up for something, etc. There was never outright hostility from him, just constant petty annoyances that drove her crazy.

I want to point out that when saying “Billi started it” at the beginning Billi’s sole piece of territory, her word mats, was being staked out by Guppy. And Billie is at a serious disadvantage already….no home, no dad…of course she is going to get annoyed if Guppy essentially takes away Billi’s words and then mom is chastising her for it. Lovely to see them as friends later!

In the videos Guppy has the numerically superior gang with a Mom and a Dog, while Billi only has a Mom - all while they are stuck in Guppy's home territory. @@solidonasoif you watch the relationship and history billi clearly places “dad” and “mom” solely in their own categories. I think the huge swathe of change for billi all at once must be hard. Remember when changing food/litter etc you piece them together day by day. In one day billi was taken, moved at least five times, force separated from her “dad” and now stopped in with another cat, who appears to want to take or at least use, the ONE remaining link billi has to normality- her buttons. You can see why and how she was / is so possessive

Yes! I noticed on other channels where cats talk through buttons (like Russell from catmanjohn) they get extremely protective of them. Which makes total sense. A talking cat not able to use their buttons would be like a deaf human who uses sign language having their hands tied behind their back.
@TieDyeVikki
@TieDyeVikki Жыл бұрын
@@CrankyBarista That's a good analogy. I've said before that deciding to get buttons is a huge commitment, because once they have them, taking them away for any reason would be cruel and frustrating, akin to cutting out a human's tongue. But in my scenario the human could at least still communicate by writing and/or signing. In your scenario, the human couldn't do either of those things, so it's a better comparison. So I may steal your analogy if I ever again make such a post! :)

A particular backyard might be one cat's territory in the morning and another cat's territory in the afternoon. You'll see it with indoor cats in how they'll take turns napping on a particular shelf and such. All that's after the cats are used to having other cats around and negotiate time-shares. Billi's used to being the only cat, so she needed reminding.

@@brigidtheirish yep! solo cats grow used to all things being “my territory”, and when adding in a second one it can definitely take them some time to adjust to many of them becoming “my territory right now” and even more so when things become “our territory”. for a senior cat that’s unused to such things billie is doing incredibly well!

Wow! When you told her, "I don't think she knew you were trying to play." She changed her demeanor! The butt wiggle and, as soon as Guppy rolled over ('ready to gut enemy' move), Billie walked off. She basically spoke 'cat' so Guppy understood her. Billie is bilingual!

yeah this video was honestly super interesting to watch! from the “guppy mad” which billi seemed to understand a little, to her pressing the play button when guppy ran off and owner pressed “guppy hi”. she also seemed to understand when told guppy didn’t know she wanted to play, because the switch to trying to communicate friendly playfulness was super apparent! she almost seemed to overact it a bit, like she was trying to make sure it couldn’t be misunderstood at all. the neat thing about this buttons study is getting to see how our pets think, it really is just so interesting. you can totally see how they have similar cognitive ability & sense of self to a small child. the body language is different (because, well, they’re cats) but this reminds me so much of a pair of toddlers working out a relationship

Look, I just love how Billie can not only communicate her satisfaction with Guppy going upstairs, but when you told her she was being aggressive it’s like she took your advice?! And tried a different method of play by pouncing like a kitten? And napping with Guppy?! Your cat took your advice and acted on it? And even solved her conflict with it?! It’s like she went to cat counseling!

i love how billi confirmed to mom like “don’t worry mom, we were just playing” sometimes playing with cats can look or sound intense, my grandma’s old kittens played but one would always whine when she was loosing 😂, i knew she wasn’t hurt because after her sister/cousin got off she tackled her. idk if guppy did know during that interaction tho, my one cat often does that; my other cats won’t know he’s just trying to play (mostly when we first got him, my other male was pretty territorial with him especially since he was smaller then Romeo [playful cat in question]) thankfully now mine only growls at Romeo when he wants to be alone or when he’s protecting me (he protects me when i try to sleep at night ❤)

@@brigidtheirish yeah that is true, i don’t remember if my kitten did it when we first got her but i believe so; hard to tell since our cat (Romeo) was much bigger then her when they started playing together. i believe Macie (one of the kittens) grew out of it before she unfortunately caught a feline specific disease and had to be put down
