the best video so far to explain the heat/seal issue and how to do it. The videos I found mostly said heat the gasket before install, but didn't explain any further. I'm happy he showed how to do it once the gasket is already on. Great video. Mr. Newberry didn't trip up as he spoke, explained things in an easy to follow way, no fancy technical language, and demonstrated it as he went. Perfect for someone who is visual and needs to see/do the things to 'learn' them.

This video was super helpful! My new door gasket was slightly small - I managed to get it sort of installed, but the bottom part was a bit scrunched up and did not quite lie flat - especially at the corners, where I simply could not the corners of the gasket to stay in the door groove. I put books against the door to keep the door reasonably sealed while I figured out whether to put the old gasket back on or not. Then found this video and tried the "dip in hot bathtub water trick" mentioned. After watching the video I pulled the gasket off again and put it in hot water. The gasket was actually too big for the bathtub, so I would dip one side of the gasket in the tub for a minute or two, pull that side to stretch it slightly, rotate 90 degrees, dip, pull, rotate, dip, pull, rotate, etc. for about two or three full revolutions. (I only pulled on the sides, NOT the corners, for fear of tearing the gasket corners.) This worked! I was then able to re-install the gasket, and this time it it lay flat all around and was no longer scrunched up and pulling out of the groove at the corners. Now I wish that I had made my own video! ;-)

Thanks for the new gasket instructions also. I almost gave up with a bad seal on the new unit. But I took it off and tried again with the hot bath tub trick with a quick run of the heat and it totally worked. Saved me from buying a new freezer. Thanks Man!

Dude. You're a Saint. We literally just got a new fridge for my upstairs place. And we had to reverse the hinges from factory and now the seal won't meet the fridge on the hinge side. This is what I needed. Going to give it a shot. Here I am at midnight trying to fix a fridge gasket. 🤟🏻🤣 #Adulting

I just received my new gasket and, because I’m both tired after work and hard headed and because it’s been at room temperature on a warm summer day, I simply peeled off the old and attached the new. Although this new gasket is fairly soft, Bill is correct that the door isn’t going to close like it did, with the old gasket that’s been on forever. At first, it would barely close at all and I do see gaps and I’m going to have to take a hair drier to it. Right now, until I do that, something is bracing the door shut. Not sure if I just heard it open though. But, the main reason why I’m writing this, is because I feel as if I probably should’ve bought an OEM gasket. While the lip fits into the groove, it doesn’t feel as stiff as the original lip on my old gasket. This gives me worry that the gasket is not going to stay in the groove. That my worry is t completely that the gasket can’t be reformed, but that the back side that goes in the groove will free itself. I also have to wonder whether the magnet is of decent strength, as well. Again, although only time will tell, perhaps, I should’ve spend more and bought something I have some confidence in. I would hate to go through this and come home one day to an open refrigerator and a ton of spoiling food. As I got mine on eBay, it’s going to be some time before I leave feedback as, I’ll have to see how this works out. So far, although I have yet to use the hairdryer, I’m not getting that smack of a kiss that I get with the freezer door, when I close it. This worries me. Perhaps, I need a gasket with a magnet that feels as if it’s going to suck me into the fridge when I close it.

Brilliant! I never knew that one needed to deal with the gasket when one changes the hinge side. I went exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions but this was never mentioned. I suppose it was because the manufacturer makes the assumption that the freezer is new and does not allow for the possibility of it being secondhand. I did indeed change the hinge side and now the freezer is iced up. Now I know why and what to do. Thanks for a very informative and well presented tutorial!

Just ran into a similar situation. Took s gasket off another fridge to put on another one. I did try the heat thing before sering this video, but not while on the fridge. Now I know why the replacement gasket was compressed. Handle must have been reversed on the two fridges. I will try this method. Btw, I have watched sevetal of Bill's videos over the years. Stumbled across this one. Glad I did. Bill Newbury (RIP)

Dear Bill: YOU ARE A REFRIGERATOR GOD!!!!!!! OMG - THE HAIR DRYER!!!!!! I went from having an old gasket that worked on one side, not the other, flipped it over, then when I saw the gap, used the hair dryer, thinking, "no way" and PRESTO - my door magnets work better now than 10 years ago lol - THANK YOU!!!!!

I never see anyone give the door a wipe after removing the old gasket? Should we? Also, funny you mention clean that air intake on the blow dryer:) I have 2 pet peeves, always keep that blow dryer screen clean so the motor can breath, and alway clean the clothes dryer vent screen before every new load:). LOL. Thanks for the time you spent doing this vid!

My friend gave me a small Kenmore 5 Cu Ft front load freezer that was sitting in her garage for who knows how long. I was thrilled to get it BUT I quickly discovered that the gasket on one side of the door was completed twisted and out of track. I'm going to try removing the entire gasket and soak it in hot water in the tub before reinserting it. It's worth a shot! Thanks for the info.

dude, you just gave me what i was looking for, to fix a used fridge i was about to toss. my appliance guy said it wouldnt be worth it to come fix. but now i think i can do it. i think if i take the gasket off, and throw it in a hot tub and clean it, i can reshape it, and put it back on, 180 degrees turned. there's something about how the door shuts, that has deformed the gasket along the bottom seal, so that it has pinched itself, way out to the hinge side. i might end up having to remove the door and rehang it, because it seems to hang crooked: lower on the left edge than the right. the guy said its not worth his time to rehang it, but i have the time. i have the hairdryers to soften the gasket. i have the tools to undo the screws and bolts. i have the putty knife to work along the groove if i need to. the maker said a new gasket will cost 158 dollars and the fridge is 23 years old. but what you've told me makes me think i may not have to buy another replacement gasket. a hot water bath might just let me reshape the thing, so it closes the gap again! i can get my hot water up to 180 degrees. ... i was also thinking about moving this one into my kitchen from the garage, and changing it to open with the opposite hand. if i try that, now, thanks to you, i know in advance what to expect, with the gasket. if i change the direction it opens, i should be able to adapt the gasketing-- with your heat tricks-- so that it seals right, with the switched door opening. dude, you gave me such hope. i'll let you know how it works out. i might not have to spend that 158 bucks on a new gasket, at all! -- a hot bath might just soften the thing to where i can reshape it correctly and put it back on! i dont think it has any breaks or cracks. it's just never been worked on, since it got manufactured. and i'm the sort who will try my hand at fixing something, before i decide if it absolutely can not be fixed. so--- awesome! thanks so much,, dude.

The hair drier helped get the hinge side to expand and seal. The same with the outer edge. However, the top and bottom have a different problem which is crumbling inner door plastic. I have found an excellent solution to this. Home depot sells a piece of flat aluminum stock 1/16" x 1/2" x 36" A piece of this , drilled for holes can go over the inner door with the screws through it. This also can extend into the corner to give the corner a brace. Of course, the gasket covers this so no cosmetic issue. So I am getting a good result. Only that I expected a 15 minute job and got a week long challenge. But what else did I have to do? Right? Bill's video a lifesaver.

Very helpful video. I installed a new gasket on the refrigerator door now the door does not even close on the center part, it does good seal all around it but it "pushes" the door out by the opposite side of the hinges; there is not adjustment to the hinges that i can see. this is a whirlpool two doors refrigerator. the original gasket developed a gap from middle to bottom in the right door by the handles which was making it lose some cool for about 30 inches as the gasket was "compressed" in. I should have tried to fix it with the blower before expending $145.00 on the new gasket that now does not works ands the appliance place that sold it does not want me to return it! they are saying they can get me another gasket but not returns!

Still on the job. I found another way to deal with crumbling liner holes. Fender washers. I now have the gasket in reasonably well. Might be a few places the need attention. It is weltering in the room it is located in, nence my many retreats. Next I will try to get a decent seal with the hair drier. (I got me a Siegfried Sassoon, which looks like a mega drier.) Since the old gasket sealed well i don't think I need any door adjustment.

I am in the process of replacing a gasket with screw-clips design. I did not warm the gasket but let it sit to get flat. Now it looks like a hair dryer is in my future. at present I need a few screws and adjustment but it seems to have a gap about 3/16 at the hinge side. I measured the new gasket and they are both 3/4", so I was stymied. I now figure the drier is the answer in one way or another--that and finish the correct installation. Another blunder was not removing the door and getting it over with. I am doing it all the hard way it seems. The inner liner is also prone to crumbling at the edge. But I wanted to ask, if anyone knows, whether removing the insulating shims under the door hinge is an option.? These are about 1/8". Another bright idea I had was to stuff the offending gasket with something soft. I'll get a drier. If I had known it was not a simple R and R I would have waited until winter when you could leave the door off without spoilage. In fact, in examining the old seal in the light of what I have learned from various Utubes, didn't need to be replaced at all. It is quite supple. It does have a small separation of the magnet but probably some silicone and locate it out the way. Instead i will save it.

If you use a hair dryer to expand the seal will it not just contract after it cools and have the same problem? My Maytag fridge has been leaking around the seal for a long time., both the freezer door and fridge door. I get a lot of ice buildup from incoming moisture in the freezer. Lately my freezer has been sealing a little better but the fridge door has a see through gap along the non hinge side and moisture was building up in the ceiling. I thought the moisture was coming from the freezer drain hole being clogged with ice. I cleaned the ice from around the evaporator and cleared the hole to see it is just a big trough that water runs down onto the back wall and to a drain under the vegetable bins. Not a tube to the compressor area like the old ones had which had to sometimes be snaked out. I was still getting moisture. Then I unplugged the fridge and took the aluminum drain cover from under the evaporator and saw that it was iced completely over again. I left it unplugged for three days and now the moisture has stopped forming on the fridge ceiling even though I still have a leaking seal. I figure the drain trough will eventually ice back over again when enough moisture accumulates around it and it freezes. I thought about screwing a hasp on the side to the non hinge side door edge and pull it in to latch it tight. Wouldn't look that good, but I figure it would work. But I will try your method first. Thanks

This guy is informative once I take the gasket off completely is worrisome he makes it look rather easy that swarms impossible edit wtf dang did a fantastic job how do you know what size Ron think I might have to measure Sutton see my thang is tearing a little bit and ripped a tiny bit at the top of the door seal so didn't say whether or not that's even gonna be an option or what to do regarding the ripping is about an inch on the side so Ron if I flip it around what exactly is going to happen with the other side and will it be useless that's my concern it's working but leaking like runny and sloppy yeah rob bothersome so again what about the rip and Ronny u better start doing Sutton around here being lazy isn't an option anymore - making excuses and letting me do everything it's teamwork and a relationship and you ain't doing Nathan don't even talk to your peoples but it's the only rip the dude didn't give a close up if what it supposed to look like the gasket tucked into the crevasse and the outcome is what exactly and can I do it with the ripping up top Ron 😳🤷‍♂️ just not good at things of this nature and it's frustrating need somebody to copilot so to speak Ronny sure would be helpful and a much better situation Ron I can't keep watching videos tho and not get the right answer maybe I should measure it and just see what the damage is going to be for Deutschland 😬😂 cause flipping it around won't help the ripping and it could come apart on the other side seems the magnet might be involved with the ripping or Sutton wonder what 🤷‍♂️can't tape Nathan it won't work correctly Ronny 🤷‍♂️ ugh keep having to change my socks water on the ground that I'm unfamiliar with and tend to forget about until it's too late obviously but Ron I also can't refrigerate the entire downstairs either the drinks are sweating and have moisture so to speak whatever it's called slowly warming up and leaking like a faucet so to speak cause Ronny won't spell the word correctly so Ron I can't go another night with the refrigerator running so much the engine is gonna blow up or quit working it's having to do extra work and run harder for a longer Amount if time and overworked so to speak and if the motor thing gives out then it's a wrap completely and Nathan works anymore once that happens so Ron think about what or which way you want to approach this thang I'll see how much Deutschland is willing to spend for a new rubber gasket I guess that's what it's called 🤷‍♂️😬 what a ridiculous situation 🤷‍♂️🙄🤷‍♂️ hate things like this happening the vacuum breaks the hair clippers breaks etc etc etc always Sutton breaking and not working correctly for me Ron now I'm worried about the motor shutting down permanently which is really worrisome wonder if I should unplug it and try repairing it with it off thinking about getting a hair dryer and nonsense like that is worrisome I don't hear of feel Nathan no noise 😲😬😬🤷‍♂️ Ron no noise or vibration 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔unspeakable things happening unplug sounds and seems the same currently unless I'm missing Sutton but I shit the fan off and things are quiet unfortunately 😔🤷‍♂️I'm gonna try plugging it in direct to the wall and hope 😔🤷‍♂️ won't matter Ronny dang the motor was working and now it seems to cut out stopped is there an automatic shutoff thang like there should be for safety reasons but certainly isn't on this particular model of refrigeration now Ron I'm huffing and puffing worried and not happy about the situation trying to think what possibly can I do to fix this situation and Ron it's worrisome would be an understatement I'm afraid to re plug it in and hear Nathan and then it's gonna ruin my night and day and week tremendously - 😔😔😔 that's downright disappointment feel horrible about things everything is going unspeakable - nothing is right or going well so to speak certainly not anything good or positive is not happening the freezer doesn't help my situation 😔🤷‍♂️😬😔I'm sweating worried Ron you got any bright ideas like the Lysol injection ? 😳🤷‍♂️😬 brainstorm with your peoples this towel is tremendously wet like the water when it's raining soaked Ron ice used to be growing out of the refrigerator and Nathan currently and all that ice is melted it's gone turned to the floor I'm assuming sloppiness too as well 🤷‍♂️😔 idk what to do right now Ron I'm speechless and my heart is pounding worried panicked a bit or Sutton 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔having to get rid of it and bring it anywhere is worrisome Ron can't just throw it out like a trash bag gotta go somewhere else and that's worrisome as well - unspeakable can't believe this Ronny Ron your a jinx destroying everything I'm gonna have to just think for a minute and get myself together - got nobody to ax for advice or anything of the sort nowadays 😔😔😔😔😔🤷‍♂️😔 ready time cry out mercy - seems everything is broken in my life currently 😔🤷‍♂️ unfortunately not sure what's happening but nothing works and not going all that well so to speak Ron I'm unhappy - would be an understatement Ron if you or your people's think of suggestions don't hesitate !!! 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔

Thanks so much for the tips. Excellent video, very clear instructions. I was going to buy a new door seal since I swopped my fridge door round but now I'll try the hair dryer method. Fingers crossed, Thanks again!
