Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G For more donation options, see: Lifeprint.com/donate Thanks! - Dr. Bill

This is such useful information! Even though I'll likely keep using the formal signs, knowing these will be very useful when communicating with fluent people, thanks for the video.

Oh nice, half a million now, reminds me of the saying "Horses and dolphins are freeflowing and wild, eagles inspire us to fly, cows and sheep... impress us with their numbers"~~ but truly, ASL gives me a better spatial understanding of herds, mooooo~

Very interesting post. I have never taken formal classes for ASL and have learned mostly on my own and from my BFF who is Deaf. Interesting because I found out many of my signs are the casual version rather than the dictionary version. Oh well Deaf are the best teachers.

Exactly. People sometimes ask me: "What is the fastest way to learn ASL?" I respond: Marry a Deaf person. (Ha.) However, teaching is a skill. Not everyone has it. Given the choice, a student should certainly choose to learn from a skilled, ASL-proficient, Deaf person. However, average Deaf are often no better at teaching ASL than average Hearing English speakers are at teaching English. Meaning, I wouldn't just hire some random English speaker off the street to teach an English class -- but we see exactly that sort of thing happening in college programs when Hearing program administrators (who often don't know ASL) hire Deaf people (who may or may not be skilled at teaching) to teach ASL classes. Skilled, trained, experienced, Deaf teachers (with a passion for teaching) who are bilingual and bicultural tend to be the best teachers (of ASL to Hearing people) because skilled-bi/bi-Deaf are able to bridge worlds. __________________________ For those who might be wondering: I am Deaf. My wife of many years is Deaf.

So true! Yes Deaf and fluent in their own language and I learn by copying them. But I can tell you that most I’ve met can’t explain why they sign the way they sign….meaning they can’t explain such technicalities as grammar or classifiers etc. Perhaps I should have clarified my comment more because I don’t necessarily mean that all deaf people are good teachers. Some to not have that gift of being able to work with people or explain things well. But for me watching and copying has taught me much

Then there are those individuals (both Deaf and Hearing) who believe they are teaching ASL grammar when really they are teaching what they think is ASL grammar but really are teaching a subset of ASL grammar and not even the most commonly signed real life ASL structures: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/store-i-go-the-myth.htm www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/subject-verb-object-asl-sentence-structure.htm

:O What is "for-for"?
@sign-language
@sign-language 21 күн бұрын
In ASL gloss (writing of ASL into English), the sign is often labeled as "FOR-FOR" and tends to mean "What for?" or "Why?" -- as in "Why did you do that or why should something be done?" It is a "WH"-type question version of the sign "FOR."

Hello 👋 bill sir…. I ask curious to you? Okay.. So “mentality” is sign are what mean? Sir… And please help me sir.. Thank you bill 😁
@sign-language
@sign-language Күн бұрын
If you are asking how to sign "mentality" it might help to first be clear on what "mentality" means. According to the Oxford dictionary "mentality" means: "the characteristic attitude of mind or way of thinking of a person or group." A way to approximate that meaning in ASL would be to do the sign for "attitude" and then sign "theirs" using a repeated movement. Or you could use the sign for "viewpoint" by "their." I'm sure there are other ways of signing the concept of mentality. The "right" way will depend on the context and the intent of the signer.

Oh hey, thanks for the heads up! I came across this one on an SD card and thought it was one that I hadn't processed yet. The good news is I have five or six new videos that really haven't been uploaded yet that I'm in the process of tracking down (SD cards everywhere, ha). Again, thanks! Hmmm viewership is pretty good on reruns ...
